Chapter 1

Heather Hilmann straightened Liam Sherr's scarf for him and then turned to look at me. "Of course. Ian Jeffrey is not unreasonable. Besides, I have known Liam for ten years. If Ian really minds, he should be adapting to us."On the way back, I sat in the back seat.Heather adjusted the passenger seat to her preferred position, but the GPS automatically announced, "Heading to Liam's house."I looked at my reflection in the car window and felt exhausted, so I lowered my head and bought a one‑way ticket to London in seven days.Their ten years would continue, but our four years had come to an end.Liam's apartment complex did not allow visitor vehicles to park overnight.Heather did not look at the registration form. She entered his building and apartment number with practiced ease."Heather, the light in my living room seems broken." Liam did not get out of the car. He only frowned as he held the grill pan. "The property management said they can only fix it tomorrow."He looked u

At 2 a.m., I was awakened by the sound of shattered glass. When I rushed into the guest room, Liam stood in the middle of the floor, covered in broken shards. He held the mechanical pocket watch my father had given me.The watch cover had fallen off, and the second hand was frozen in place."Ian, I am sorry." Liam’s face was pale as he reached out to grab me. "I only wanted to find a blanket. I never expected it to fall when the cabinet door opened."I snatched the pocket watch from him. Before my father passed away, he held onto it and waited for me all night. Because Heather had a sudden high fever, I did not see him for the last time. Since then, this pocket watch became something I never allowed anyone to touch."I told you not to come in here." As I finished speaking, I realized I was shaking violently.Liam’s face turned even paler as his Adam’s apple bobbed. "I did not mean to.""Get out.""Ian...""I asked you to get out." I pointed toward the door, but Liam retreated

The next day, Heather sent someone to deliver an antique pocket watch. It was from the same brand and the same year, and the auction price was seven digits. Her assistant placed the velvet box in front of me. "Ms. Hilmann canceled two meetings in the morning to find it. She also said Mr. Sherr is sorry and hopes you stop blaming him."I did not open the box.She never skimped on compensation, but she never faced why I was distressed. In the afternoon, I rushed to the exhibition hall with the entries required by the college. They would affect the final scholarship, and they were also the handover I needed to complete before I left.As soon as the car left the city, Heather’s phone call came in. "Are you out?""Yes, I am submitting my artwork for review."There was a two‑second silence on the other end of the phone."What time do you finish? I will come pick you up."I held my phone and did not answer at once.Last night, she left with Liam without hesitation, but today she re

At 7 p.m., Heather brought Liam back to our marital home.I had just placed the last piece of clothing into my suitcase when I heard her calling me from the living room. "Come out and sign the settlement agreement."Besides the accident settlement agreement, an incident explanation sat on the coffee table. It stated that the driver had suddenly changed lanes because I urged him, causing the car behind him to be unable to dodge. If I signed it, Liam would not be held responsible, and even his driver’s license would not be suspended."He caused the accident by looking down to pick up his phone." I pushed the papers back."The surveillance footage and dashcam footage can prove it."Liam’s eyes reddened at once. "Ian, I know it is my fault. But I am participating in a charity racing team selection next month. If I have a record for dangerous driving, I will never be able to race again."He had loved racing since college. I paid for the registration fee and even bought him his first r

The day after I left, Liam successfully passed the selection for the charity racing team.Heather personally placed the medal around his neck. The audience burst into thunderous applause, but she kept looking toward the entrance. Even after the celebration party ended, she still did not see me."Has Ian not replied yet?" Liam held the medal in his hand, the unease in his eyes growing stronger.Heather glanced at her phone. The messages she sent to the chat group containing us three last night remained unanswered.Heather: [The studio has been sorted out.]Heather: [Come back after you have had enough.]Heather: [Do not make me catch you.]She turned off the phone screen with an icy expression. "He is deliberately ignoring us. He will come back on his own in a few days."Liam forced a smile. "Yeah. Ian loves you so much, how could he really leave."His remark pleased Heather. For the past four years, no matter how fierce our arguments were, I always gave in first if she brou

Liam’s smile gradually faded. "Heather, what has come over you?"I told you to leave."Heather walked past him, but he grabbed her sleeve. "Did Ian say something again? That is how Ian is. Every time he is upset, he wants you to concede first. But this time, he refused to forgive me and even wanted to ruin my career..."Heather stopped walking. "He is gone."Liam froze for a few seconds. "Where did he go?""London.""Impossible." He blurted it out, his face even paler than Heather’s."He promised me that he would not apply to schools in London again."Heather slowly turned her head. "When did he promise that?"Liam opened his mouth but could not utter a word.Heather stared at him, and the last trace of warmth in her eyes disappeared completely. "Liam, what else have you kept from me?"She had her assistant pull up the security footage from the hallway in our marital home.At 1:47 a.m., Liam emerged from the guest room. He carried a blanket but turned back at the door. The

After arriving in London, Heather waited at the school gate for a whole day.It began to rain in the evening.I came out of the school building holding my restored artwork and saw her at once. She was not holding an umbrella, so her black coat was soaked, but she tightly held an old wooden box in her hand.It contained drafts from my father’s studio that had been soaked by the rain."Ian." She walked toward me, her voice awfully hoarse.I stopped."Why are you here?" My tone was so calm that it surprised even me.In the past, I suffered from insomnia for the whole night if I could not contact her for only a few hours. Now that she stood in front of me after traveling so far, I did not feel the slightest emotion.Heather handed me the wooden box. "I restored all the drafts that could be repaired. I also found the surveillance footage of Liam deliberately breaking the watch. The rear‑end accident has been re‑verified. He has been disqualified from the racing team, and his driver

Heather did not leave London. She rented an apartment near the college and delivered a sugar‑free soy latte every morning. On the first day, I had the doorman throw it away.On the second day, I returned it intact.Later, she no longer left a signature and only placed a thermos at the door. I still did not drink it.When winter arrived, the school held an annual artwork exhibition.I reassembled the broken piece into three sections, preserving all the cracks. In the center of the work was my father’s stopped pocket watch.I named it "Leaving".The judges asked me why I did not hide the cracks.I touched the sharp, broken edges. "Because once something is broken, it is broken. Covering it up does not mean it was never damaged."Leaving won the top prize that year.On the day of the award ceremony, Heather sat in the last row. When the applause started, she stood up too.I saw her eyes were red, but I did not approach her. After the event, she handed my tutor a folder. A year later, I returned to the country with my artworks to participate in an exhibition tour.On the day I landed, Liam stopped me outside the airport. He had lost a lot of weight. His once carefully styled hair was cut very short, and a faint scar marked his right wrist."Ian, I only need five minutes of your time." He handed me the 100th commemorative grill pan. The engraved words on the back had worn off, leaving only an ugly scratch."Heather stopped seeing me. The password for that house has been changed. She bought the barbecue restaurant we often went to and closed it down."I did not take the grill pan. "This has nothing to do with me."Liam’s eyes reddened as he looked away. "I know. I used to think you took her away from me. But later I realized she would have chosen me within those ten years if she truly loved me. She protected me only because it was her habit. Also because she believed you would never leave."He wiped his tears with his hand. "Ian, I really considere

Before the end of the tour, I finally met Heather. She sat in the closed barbecue restaurant. The double seats by the window were still there. The extra chair by the aisle had not been removed. There were three sets of cutlery on the table. My position still did not have a sauce dish.Heather stood up at once when she saw me.After not seeing her for a year, she had lost a lot of weight. The shirt that used to be always flat was wrinkled, and the old watch I gave her was still worn on her wrist."Have a seat." She pulled out the window seat for me.It used to be Liam’s seat. I did not sit on it."I received the pocket watch. Thank you."Heather muttered, "I did not fix it. The watch repairer searched for the part for a whole year. I am only returning it to you."She turned on the grill pan.The edges of the pork belly curled up slowly as the fat dripped into the charcoal, making a soft sizzling sound. After the first piece of meat was cooked, she placed it on my plate. "No
