Chapter 1

The fact that all the parents were saying the same thing left my mind completely blank.“David, can you tell me again what happened during naptime?”I crouched down in front of him, keeping my voice as calm and neutral as possible so I wouldn’t lead him toward any particular answer. But David shrank back slightly. When he looked up at me, there was fear in his eyes.“It was a teacher dressed all in white. But her eyes were red like a rabbit’s, and when she looked at me, they narrowed into little slits.“Mommy, I was scared, so I squeezed my eyes shut really tight.”My fingers curled into a fist.In the security footage, there really had been a moment when David suddenly squeezed his eyes shut. Then a message popped up in the class group chat.“I heard this preschool was built on an old cemetery. You don’t think the kids saw some kind of ghost, do you?”A chill crawled up my spine.“Oh, and Mommy,” David added, “that strange teacher smelled really bad. Like dead fish. It was

Chapter 2

As soon as the school bus carrying the kids left for the field trip, I got into my car and immediately pulled up the live feed from the hidden camera. After going over the safety rules for the trip, the teachers led the children in singing and told them stories.Everything was lighthearted and cheerful, mostly little lessons about staying safe while they were out.Nothing seemed unusual. And yet, I couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in my gut. Then, just as one of the teachers bent down to get something from her bag, everything changed.David suddenly stood up and raised his hand, saying he needed to pee.But the next second, he froze in place.I couldn’t see David himself from the camera angle. But I could clearly see the other six children turn toward the bus window at exactly the same time.None of them moved. It was as if something outside had completely captured their attention.Or worse, as if it were commanding them. The teacher straightened up and immediately notice

At some point, one of the school bus windows had been opened.Vivian was already halfway out the window.Ms. Watson practically threw herself across the bus and grabbed Vivian by the legs, yanking her back inside. But Vivian only whined in protest.“Let me go! The teacher in white said if I jump, I’ll be able to float through the air just like her!”Ms. Watson and I both went pale.“Listen to me, Vivian. There is no teacher in white...”Before she could finish, the children immediately protested.“That’s not true! She’s flying right outside the bus! It’s so cool! I’m going to do what she says and jump out so I can fly too!”“Me too! Me too!”The children all started shouting at once as they rushed toward the windows. They gritted their teeth and pushed at the windows with all their strength, trying desperately to open them. Then something even more terrifying happened. The camera started moving.David was heading straight for the window too.“Driver, stop the bus! Stop t

I instantly realized my husband didn’t believe a word I was saying.Panic surged through me.“You have to believe me. I’m not making this up! You’re in the class group chat too, aren’t you?”I fumbled with my phone and switched back to the messaging app.“You muted the group, right? Go check it! The messages are all there. That’s proof!”I heard him tapping through his phone.“Check what? You’re the only one in there going crazy about ghosts. All the other parents have been telling you that you’re just overly anxious because David only recently started preschool.“And if you hadn’t kept calling Ms. Watson over and over and distracting her, the bus wouldn’t have crashed in the first place!”But I immediately caught the most important part of what he’d said.“The bus crashed? Where are the kids now? At the hospital?”The moment he confirmed it, I slammed on the brakes, made a U-turn, and raced toward the hospital. The second I arrived, Vivian’s mom slapped me across the face.

At my words, the parents tightened their arms around their children and looked at me warily.“Are you seriously still going on about this? We’ve tried to be nice because our kids are classmates, but enough is enough.”“Exactly. You had me so freaked out talking about ghosts last night that I barely slept. My older daughter went to this same preschool for three years and nothing ever happened. Then your kid shows up and suddenly there’s a problem? You’re the one imagining this teacher in white because there’s something wrong with you.”“Yeah. My child never said anything about some strange teacher watching them during naptime.”Looking at their indignant faces, I almost started wondering whether the hundreds of messages from last night had all existed only in my head.I took a deep breath and forced myself to stay calm.I couldn’t afford to look hysterical.“If you’re all so sure, then let’s take out our phones and compare the messages in the group chat. That’ll clear everything

I violently shook off Luther’s hand.“What are you so afraid of? Why do you keep stopping me from comparing the group chat with everyone else?”“Did you set all of this up? Are you trying to make me look crazy?”Again and again, I’d been stopped.Again and again, no one believed me.The terrifying suspicion in my mind only grew stronger.I really felt like I was losing it. Before I could stop myself, the accusation came spilling out.Luther’s expression darkened.Instead of answering me, he turned to the other parents and apologized, looking utterly helpless.“I’m sorry the children got hurt. This is my fault. I’ve been so busy with work that I failed to notice my wife’s mental state in time. She’s gotten trapped in her own imagination, and now she refuses to accept that any of this is in her head.”“I’ll have my assistant come handle the compensation immediately. If you’re still concerned, I’ll transfer David to another school.”“All I ask is that, once you receive the comp

Maybe it was the first time Luther had ever seen me look so lost and helpless. His voice softened, and his eyes filled with concern.“Honey, it’s okay. Don’t be scared. I’ll take you to see a psychiatrist right now.”“No matter what’s going on with you, I’ll stay by your side and get you through this.”Under his soothing reassurance, I gradually calmed down.I stared at the yellow button in my hand for a long moment, then let it slip from my fingers and fall to the floor. Then I let Luther take my hand and lead me into the psychiatrist’s office.David didn’t understand what a mental health problem was, but he knew people only went to the doctor when they were sick.He tugged gently on my hand.“Mommy, why does everyone keep saying you’re sick? Why do you have to see a doctor?”“And why do all those grown-ups say they’ve never seen the teacher in white? Me and the other kids all saw her.”“Daddy, tell them. Didn’t you tell me you saw her too?”At David’s last sentence, Luthe

“Where exactly do you think you’re taking my niece?”It was my uncle. He had come with Luther’s assistant. The moment David saw him, it was as if he’d finally found someone he could rely on. He burst into tears and ran straight into my uncle’s arms.“Uncle Roger, everyone says Mommy’s sick. I don’t want Mommy to be sick. Please save her!”Roger held David tightly and turned a cold stare on Luther.“What? You thought just because my sister and brother-in-law are gone, you could bully Tessa however you wanted?”“Well, I’m not dead yet.”“You think you’re sending my niece to a psychiatric hospital? Dream on.”Something vicious flashed deep in Luther’s eyes, but it vanished almost instantly, replaced by helplessness.“Uncle, Tessa really is sick. If you don’t believe me, ask the doctor. Or talk to the other parents.”Just then, Vivian’s mom walked over with Luther’s assistant and gave a cold snort.“We’ve already received the compensation. They asked me to come speak on behalf o

I let out a soft laugh.“She recognized Roger as my uncle at a glance. Almost like she already knew who he was.”Luther gave an awkward chuckle and smoothly changed the subject.“Honey, you have to get better soon. I want to bring you home as quickly as possible so the three of us can go back to living happily together.”I hugged him and nodded. But I had barely arrived at the psychiatric hospital when a nurse walked in carrying electroshock equipment, a nasty smile on her face.It was almost as if she’d been given instructions ahead of time and had been waiting for me.That was fine.Money talked. The moment she received my payment, an amused smile flashed in her eyes.“You’re a lot more generous than your husband. Maybe I should start working for you instead.”I nodded without saying anything. The nurse stared at me in surprise.“You’re not shocked at all. Or did you not understand what I said?”“I’m telling you, your husband deliberately set you up and had you committe

Chapter 10

“So Luther was the one who secretly told David that story about a strange teacher watching them sleep during naptime, deliberately planting the idea in his head until he couldn’t tell imagination from reality. Right?”“But there’s one thing I don’t understand. Even if David repeated the story to the other kids, there’s no way he could’ve given them such detailed descriptions. How did you get every child to tell the exact same story?”Vivian’s mom smiled.“Because while the kids were napping, Ms. Watson used a projector to put an image of the teacher in white on the classroom ceiling.”“The security cameras cover practically every corner of the room, but they don’t capture the ceiling.”“So of course the kids believed the teacher in white was real.”“And that class group chat you were in? Ms. Watson was the only real person from the class. Everyone else was someone we brought in to put on a show for you.”“Meanwhile, Luther used a fake account with your profile picture in the rea
