Chapter 1 The New Transfer Student

The new transfer student was named Zachary Sussman. He had joined our class just last week and sat by the window in the third row.He had made friends with everyone on his very first day. He had a silver tongue, called everyone by a funny nickname, and possessed the effortless charm of a social butterfly who could make friends anywhere.I was handing out everyone's breakfast that morning when I suddenly heard him speak up from the back of the classroom."Hey, I did the math just now. That cafe outside the school charges eight dollars for a bowl of brown sugar oatmeal if you buy it individually, but it's only six-fifty if the whole class orders together. "You guys haven't been letting someone pocket the difference this whole time, have you?"His voice wasn't particularly loud, but it carried just enough for the entire class to hear.I could feel the way everyone's eyes shifted toward me almost immediately after he said those words. The bell rang before anyone could say anything.

Chapter 2 A Burden Finally Lifted

"Maybe he wasn't making a profit,' someone tried to smooth things over. "Maybe it was just… an errand fee?"Zachary replied almost instantly, "I never said Connor was making money. I'm just giving everyone a cheaper option. You guys can order through me from now on. Again, I'm not doing this for profit."Then, he ended the message with an innocent winking cat sticker.I stared at the screen without typing a single word.A moment later, the class representative tagged me. "Connor, I won't be troubling you anymore. I'll start ordering through Zachary."Madeline chimed in immediately after, "I'm switching to Zachary, too. His offer is so much cheaper."More and more classmates began tagging me.I didn't argue but simply replied, "Okay."If they truly believed that Zachary's proposal was cheaper and more convenient, why should I try to stop them?My deskmate, Dawn Zobel, lightly nudged my elbow. "Connor… are you okay?""I'm fine." I smiled. And I truly was. I couldn't have been

Chapter 3 Finally Getting Some Sleep

"Finally, we don't have to ask Campbell to buy breakfast anymore. Honestly, I was never happy with it anyway. His prices were way too high."That particular message came from Rachel Turner. She'd asked me to pick up a breakfast burrito for her five different times in that one month alone. She'd told me to "add an extra egg" every single damn time, but she'd only ever paid me the price of the regular one.I'd never said a word about it.I scrolled through the messages one by one, my expression impassive.Meanwhile, Zachary was busy flooding the group chat with a neatly organized price list."'Oatmeal, regular price $8, group price $6.50; breakfast burritos, regular price $9, group price $7; bagels, regular price $1.50, group price $1.20; pastries, regular price $7, group price $5.50."He'd added two columns labeled "Campbell's Original Price" and "Sussman's Group Price" right next to every item. He'd even highlighted the difference in red.A few of the math whizzes in class imme

Chapter 4 Fourteen Days Later

"Great form today, Campbell. Keep this up, and you'll do very well on next week's qualifying exam."I nodded firmly. "Yes, sir. I'll work hard."…That evening, I pulled out every math paper I'd taken over the past month and started correcting my mistakes one problem at a time during the self-study period.I'd never had time to do that in the past. After all, it would be nearly 11 p.m. or even midnight by the time I got home from school and finished organizing everyone's breakfast orders for the next day.So, reviewing my mistakes after class? Hell, that had never been an option. But things were different now. The extra hour I gained every morning could go toward memorizing Spanish vocabulary, and the energy I had left during evening study sessions could be spent on solving practice problems. For the first time in a long while, I actually felt like an ordinary high school senior instead of a pack mule whose only purpose was buying breakfast for everyone else.…Zachary began

Chapter 5 Six Hours of Chaos

My phone kept vibrating so much that I thought it might vibrate itself off my table. So, it was with a frown on my face that I opened the group chat and found it in complete chaos."Connor, check the class group chat! Quick!" Dawn urged. After a moment's hesitation, I caved and opened the class group chat, the one I'd already muted. The messages started coming in around 5 p.m., and it was now almost 11 p.m. The chat's traffic hadn't slowed down for six straight hours. So, I had to scroll up for quite a while before I finally pieced together what had happened. It turned out that Rachel had started vomiting and had suffered severe diarrhea after eating the breakfast burrito Zachary brought that afternoon. She'd been sent straight to the school infirmary.Soon after, another seven or eight classmates reported varying degrees of stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. The school nurse said it was most likely a case of food poisoning after examining them. The moment that news came out, t

Chapter 6 You Get What You Pay For

"The oatmeal wasn't freshly made either. It was just instant oatmeal mixed with boiled water. It cost him less than two dollars to make, but he charged us six-fifty. "As for the breakfast burritos… he fried the tater tots using oil that had already turned black. And the ready tots had been sitting in bags for days."The group chat exploded."What? Yesterday's leftovers? No wonder the bagel was so stale!""The oatmeal was just instant mix? I seriously thought it was brown sugar oatmeal. No wonder it tasted weird.""Zachary, you've gone too far! I get that you want to make a profit, but how could you do this to us?""Yeah! Connor might have charged a little more, but at least he bought us proper food. Everything was freshly made, hot, and actually tasted good. You saved us two bucks and landed us in the infirmary!"Zachary finally couldn't maintain his silence any longer. He sent a long voice message, his voice thick with tears. "I really didn't know it'd turn out like this. I

Chapter 7 An Overdue Apology

The qualifying exam was tomorrow. So, I truly didn't have time to waste on any of this drama.…I got up at 6 a.m. the next day, ate a delicious breakfast my mother had made for me, and headed to school feeling refreshed. The qualifying exam was being held in one of the lecture halls in the science building. By the time I arrived, quite a few students were already waiting outside.Dawn spotted me and waved. "Connor, over here!"As I approached her, I realized nearly everyone there was from our little group chat without Zachary. Madeline looked awful, and her lips were a sickly shade of pale. It was obvious that the day before had taken a real toll on her."You okay?" I asked politely."I was in the bathroom for most of the night," she said weakly. "My mom almost took me to the hospital. If I'd known this would happen, I never would've tried to save those two dollars.""What's the point of saying that now?" Rachel said snidely from the side. "Everyone ordered from Zachary befo

Chapter 8 At Last, They Understood

A wave of murmurs swept through the classroom. In truth, everyone already had their suspicions. Still, it felt different to hear those suspicions being confirmed by the homeroom teacher."The school has already given Sussman a serious disciplinary warning. He has acknowledged his mistakes and has agreed to cover all medical expenses for the students who suffered food poisoning. He will also refund every dollar of profit he collected over the past two weeks."In addition, the school has confirmed that Campbell spent the past three years bringing breakfast for his classmates without ever charging a single dollar in errand fees or making any profit from price differences. "Any additional expenses incurred while delivering breakfast were paid entirely out of Campbell's own pocket. We've verified this with several shops on the commercial strip outside the school. "Every owner told us the same thing—Campbell always paid the regular price and never asked for any discounts. So, the rumo

Chapter 9 His First Honest Words

"I used to think bringing breakfast was easy. I figured it was just running an errand. I realized how difficult and exhausting it really was after trying to do it myself and how much work it actually took."As he spoke, his voice grew quieter and quieter until it was barely audible.I leaned against the classroom doorway and looked at him.The Zachary standing before me now was nothing like the one from two weeks ago. He no longer looked like the boy who had stood confidently at the front of the classroom with a grin and said, "I can't even imagine how much he's pocketed from the price difference over the past three years."Back then, he'd been wholly confident that he'd been in the right, convinced everything was under his control. Now, he looked like a child who had done something terribly wrong as he stood there with his head lowered, waiting for the executioner's blade to fall."I see."That was all I said in reply, nothing more.Zachary looked up, as if searching my face

Chapter 10 Letting Go

Madeline also replied with a simple "Yeah."Rachel simply left the group chat without saying a word.I stared at the messages for a long time before finally leaving the class group chat. Since I wasn't bringing anyone breakfast again, there wasn't a point in staying in the group anymore. However, I noticed Dawn's latest text just before I tapped "Leave Group"."I don't care what you all say, I still think Connor's breakfasts were the best."I smiled to myself and pressed the button.I had a dream that night.I dreamed about the beginning of first year, when the class representative had asked if I could help everyone pick up breakfast. I stood at the front of the classroom, looking at the unfamiliar faces below me, and nodded. The scene shifted, and I now stood alone on the commercial strip before dawn.Only a handful of breakfast shops were open, but there was a long list packed with everyone's orders and special requests sitting in my hands. I had waited in line through bit
