Chapter 1

I stood by the side of the empty highway, the midday sun beating down on me until the heat made it hard to breathe. The bandage on my knee fell off long ago, and blood trickled down my calf and soaked into the top of my shoe, leaving it sticky and wet.I had been walking for nearly an hour when a car suddenly honked behind me.Patrick Far slammed on the brakes beside me. As the window rolled down, the first thing he said was, “What, are you mute, Yuna Watson?”He didn’t notice my pallid face or the blood seeping from my wound. Instead, he continued scolding me.“You didn’t get in the car. Couldn’t you have called or sent us a message?“If Dolly hadn’t realized you weren’t in the car, were you planning to let us drive all the way to our destination? You’re seriously such a pain.”I lowered my eyes and numbly tapped my phone screen. The call log showed dozens of unanswered calls to Patrick and Dolly—calls I had made repeatedly while fighting through the pain. But they were so engrossed

I lowered my head and stared at the old scar in my palm, which had long since healed. Memories came rushing back.Back in high school, Dolly had been cornered and harassed by a group of troublemakers from outside the school. Without a second thought, I rushed forward to protect her and took a slash from a knife across my palm.I could still remember the searing pain of flesh tearing, but when I saw that Dolly was unharmed, I felt it had all been worth it.When Patrick came running after hearing what happened, his face instantly went white.“Yuna, does it hurt? How could you be so reckless?”Dolly was already crying, her eyes red as she hugged me tightly.“Yuna, thank you. You’re my best friend in the world. I’ll remember your kindness for the rest of my life. I’ll never let you down.”I foolishly believed her, thinking the bond between the three of us would remain unchanged forever. But when the SAT results came out, I had performed far worse than expected, scoring significantly lower

As we checked in, the receptionist glanced at Patrick and Dolly standing side by side and smiled.“You’re in luck! We have a complimentary upgrade available today—a beautiful honeymoon suite with an ocean view.”The tips of Patrick’s ears quickly turned red. He cleared his throat awkwardly and was about to explain when Dolly rose onto her toes and leaned toward his ear. Her voice was low enough for me to hear.“Don’t be silly. Why turn down a free upgrade?”Without hesitation, she took Patrick’s hand and smiled at the receptionist.“My husband loves ocean views. Could we have a room overlooking the ocean?”Then she turned and winked at me, silently mouthing the words.“Yuna, I’m good, right? We got an ocean-view suite for free.”I stood there, unable to smile. It was only after we entered the room that Dolly let go of Patrick’s hand and sidled up to me, her voice soft and coaxing.“Yuna, don’t be mad. I was only joking around and taking advantage of the free upgrade. Don’t take it the

The sheer absurdity of it made me gag.The two people I trusted with all my heart had crossed every line while I was already terrified and helpless. My phone suddenly rang. Patrick’s voice was full of irritation.“Yuna, do you have any idea how dangerous that was? How could you let Dolly take the jet ski all the way out into open water? How would you ever answer for it if something happened to her?”I listened quietly until he finished, then spoke softly.“Patrick, I’m leaving.”There was a noticeable pause on the other end.“Where are you going?”After barely two seconds, he let out a mocking laugh.“What, you know you screwed up and want to run home before taking responsibility?”“I’m sorry, Yuna. I know you didn’t do it on purpose. I was just worried.”He knew exactly how to soften his voice and prey on my tender heart. The next moment, Dolly’s muffled voice came through the phone.“Patrick.”All of Patrick’s patience vanished.“Dolly’s condition is unstable. The doctor wants to kee

But I could no longer hear him.The wind roared in my ears as my body plummeted downward, the vast ocean rushing toward me below.I reached out with my right hand and firmly grasped the hand that had crossed five years of time just to find me.Inside the helicopter, Patrick completely lost control. He ignored the danger at that altitude and desperately tried to climb over the door and follow me down. The crew reacted swiftly, grabbing his arms and restraining him inside the cabin.“Sir, don’t do it! Falling into the ocean is too dangerous. We’ve already launched a search-and-rescue operation!”Patrick clawed at the empty air several times, his fingernails turning white.“Let go! Let go of me!”“Yuna jumped! I have to find her!”Several crew members immediately began the rescue operation. Speedboats raced across the water as the search team combed every inch of the surrounding sea.Patrick stood frozen on the shore before his legs gave out, leaving him collapsed on his knees in the sand

Patrick’s entire body shook. The breakdown and pain he had suppressed for three days finally erupted, and he screamed at the screen.“Who are you to make that decision for me? Who are you to tell me to give up on her?”“I’m going to find her! I have to find her!”The future Patrick showed no anger or emotion. He simply asked in a quiet voice.“Do you really love Yuna? If you truly love her, then why did you keep favoring Dolly and hurting Yuna?“Your future self will still cling to false hope and do even more unforgivable things that will destroy her.”He paused, his voice heavy as every word cut straight to the heart.“Let her go. And let yourself go, too.”After the call ended, Patrick kept his phone clenched in his hand for a long time.He stood on the desolate, empty beach, his entire body trembling uncontrollably. The words of his future self sawed through his mind again and again.[Do you really love her?][Then why did you keep hurting her?][Did you ever truly keep your boundar

My senses gradually returned. The hand that had reached across five years to hold mine pulled me through the haze of time. The waves, the deep ocean, and the beach before me all faded away.As light and shadows shifted, I was pulled into a solemn, freezing-white space.A black-and-white portrait hung high above me. In the frame, I looked calm and peaceful, forever frozen at the youngest age of my life.It was my funeral.I stared blankly at the portrait, the shock and disbelief sweeping over me so powerfully that I could barely remain standing.A low, hoarse voice came from beside me. It was Patrick, five years in the future. The reckless, immature boy he had once been was gone. His face was lined with years of exhaustion and unbearable regret as he gazed quietly at my portrait before speaking.“Yuna, this is what the future was originally supposed to be.“In the original timeline, you endured the pain of our long-distance relationship and bore the betrayal of Dolly and me carrying on

Chapter 8

My life returned to normal—quiet and steady, without the endless resentment and fixation that had once consumed me.I devoted myself to my own life and career, burying myself in my work as my career steadily flourished. Then, one day, while reviewing resumes for a new hire, a familiar ID photo caught me completely off guard. It was Dolly. After our final confrontation by the sea five years earlier, Patrick had cut all ties with her.The illusion of their perfect chemistry, the golden couple in everyone’s eyes, shattered completely. All the flirtation hidden in their daily interactions and every inappropriate display of intimacy was exposed.Everyone learned that Dolly had been the other woman. Branded a homewrecker, she became the target of public scorn. The university revoked all her academic honors and scholarships. The glamorous image she had once enjoyed was destroyed.Unable to withstand the pressure from every direction, she was eventually forced to drop out. With only a high sc

Another quiet six months passed, and I had grown completely accustomed to a peaceful life without constantly tormenting myself. Then, while I was out one day, I unexpectedly ran into Patrick. He had lost a great deal of weight. His cheeks were hollow, and his cheekbones stood out more sharply. He stood rooted to the spot, his gaze stubborn yet bewildered, as though he had searched for something countless times and had finally found a vague sense of home. After a long moment, he slowly approached and asked cautiously.“Hello… Have we met before?”I looked away and replied politely.“Sir, I’m afraid you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”Patrick looked deeply into my eyes. Unbidden emotion rippled through his gaze, along with a bewildering attraction and panic he couldn’t control.“I don’t know why, but even though I’ve forgotten so much, whenever I look into your eyes, my heart starts racing.“I can’t shake the feeling that something important once happened between us.”I looked at him
