Joanna smirked, eyeing the faint wisps of steam still rising from his knuckles. "Good. Just remember you're a human flamethrower now, Sparky, not a campfire. If you accidentally singe off my eyebrows out there, I'm leaving you for the zombies."Briggs let out a rare, gruff chuckle, the sudden burst of heat from his palms fading back beneath his skin as he readied his weapon. She turned back to the window, her expression sharpening as she looked toward the brick office building. "Alright, lunch is over. Let's move."They slipped out of the highrise and down into the freezing rain, instantly dropping into a low crouch as they hit the asphalt. The one-block sprint to the brick building was anything but empty. A tight pack of shuffling zombies noticed the movement and surged forward, their guttural groans echoing throug

Joanna grabbed the heavy duffel bag of jewels, slung it securely over her shoulder, and gripped her sickle sword. In a race against the clock with the tsunami looming, she kicked past the barricade and left the brick office building. The moment she hit the freezing downpour, she was instantly swarmed. Moving like a blur of lethal motion, Joanna swung the double-edged blade in wide, sweeping arcs, decapitating zombies five at a time. The glowing cores tore away from the collapsing bodies, flying through the air as she snapped them straight into her hidden storage space. But as she cut her way onto the slick asphalt, a heavy wave of exhaustion dragged at her limbs. Joanna grimaced, realizing she desperately needed to get stronger soon. Her energy reserves were draining faster and faster lately with every micro-jump and core pull, and her current power capacity si

The hum of heavy diesel engines echoed through the wet forest air as the smaller convoy of thirty soldiers rolled up towards the newly formed courtyard. They spilled out of the transport trucks, their faces a mix of sheer exhaustion and wide-eyed disbelief as they stared up at the two-story fortress that had appeared out of nowhere.Briggs immediately snapped out of his daze, his military instincts kicking in. "Listen up! Squad leaders, get the men inside the lower-level containers and establish a defensive perimeter. We need this base secure before the larger convoy from Dillon arrives with the families."Joanna turned back to the commander, her mind already racing through the logistical nightmare of housing everyone. "Briggs, Jolie will help you put together a list of everything your men need for short-term housing. Get it all down so we are ready when the re

Julian spoke up, leaning back in his chair. "My property is along that same ridge, about ten miles from your place. It actually might be able to support the troops."In an all too innocent tone, he added, "Briggs can take his men there and find us in the spring after the snow melts."Everyone turned, giving him a pointed, deadpan stare. It was blindingly obvious he just wanted the commander completely out of the picture.Briggs slowly set his biscuit down, his jaw tight as he stared back at the smug billionaire. The silent tension in the room grew thick enough to cut with a knife, leaving it up to Joanna to shut down the territory war before it escalated further.Joanna let out a heavy sigh, pinching the bridge of her nose. "For now, I think the third shelter is the best

Joanna tapped her fingers against her mug, weighing the timeline. If the local undead numbers were manageable, it meant they could secure the surrounding perimeter much faster than anticipated."Ok, what about the supply runs in Dillon?" Joanna asked, steering the conversation back to their primary targets.Caleb's expression shifted, a genuine look of worry clouding his face. "I sense a heavy danger in the specific place Commander Briggs listed."Briggs tensed at the warning, though he didn't look entirely surprised. "Is it that snake Jax?" he demanded, his voice dropping an octave."No," Caleb replied, shaking his head. "Jax and Elliot barely managed to escape the tsunami. They are heading up north right now to lick their wounds and regroup. But I can tell you that sev
