Chapter 1

The moment I found myself sitting in that car again, I couldn't help but shudder.Memories of the horrific ending from my previous life came rushing back, leaving me feeling as if I had been plunged into an icy abyss. My parents had gone gray almost overnight while trying to compensate the victims' families. They were both retired, yet they worked themselves to death because of me.Meanwhile, I had been sitting in prison, unable to even see them one last time. Then there were all those innocent families whose lives had been ruined because of me. I could still remember the hatred in their eyes whenever they looked at me.But one thing didn't make sense. I was sure that the brakes had failed, so why had every inspection facility insisted that there was nothing wrong with the car?I was just an ordinary person. There was no way all of them were conspiring against me.So, where exactly did things go wrong? The car was still speeding down the interstate, so I gripped the steering wh

Chapter 2

Helpless, I had no choice but to accept the technician's explanation. After all, Thanksgiving weekend was indeed one of the busiest travel periods of the year. I could tell just from how long it had taken roadside assistance to reach me.Furthermore, my insurance company's tow trucks couldn't come onto the interstate to get me.After the technician left, I climbed back into the driver's seat. The moment my hands closed around the steering wheel, memories of the crash from my previous life came flooding back. All I could hear were the sounds of metal screeching, people screaming, and the shrill blare of emergency sirens.Images of my parents' hair turning gray overnight and the bloodshot, furious eyes of the victims' families glaring at me filled my mind.I shuddered, cold sweat soaking through my clothes. For a long time, I couldn't bring myself to press the gas pedal.I pulled out my phone and called home."Mom…"The moment I spoke, tears welled up in the corners of my eyes.

Chapter 3

A wave of despair crushed me. Why? The brakes had been working perfectly just moments ago. Why were they failing again? Was I really destined to suffer this fate? The steering wheel was damp from my sweaty palms.Seeing the traffic stream past me on every side, I even had an impulse to swerve into the divider.Just then, a new message from Mom appeared on the car's infotainment screen."Gigi, are you on your way home?""Your dad went grocery shopping. We're making your favorite pot roast for dinner tonight. Cheer up."No, I couldn't give up just like that! My parents were still waiting for me at home.I couldn't imagine how devastated they would be if they learned that I died on the interstate. My vision blurred with tears, but I quickly wiped them away.It was going to be fine. Since I realized the problem before another crash, there was still a chance. The brakes had failed earlier too, but I managed to get the car onto the shoulder.I could do the same thing again.Th

Chapter 4

After the two state troopers pulled me from the car, the first thing I said was, "My brakes… The brakes failed."The roadside assistance that had arrived with the troopers was the same guy I had called earlier. The technician stared at me in disbelief. "Ma'am, didn't we test them already? There's nothing wrong with your brakes. If you were nervous, why didn't you follow my advice and take it slow?"The interstate had been brought to a standstill. Ambulances rushed back and forth, carrying injured people away from the scene.Seeing their expressions, I couldn't hold myself together anymore. I dropped to my knees and broke down sobbing."I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do this. You have to believe me! My brakes really did fail. Please believe me!"I didn't know how to explain myself. The brakes had indeed worked perfectly when the technician tested them. They had also worked when I tested them myself.Only ten minutes had passed between then and now. I thought I could make it safely o

Chapter 5

"Officers, please release me for a moment," I pleaded. The officers looked at me suspiciously, clearly wondering what I was up to.I urgently shook my cuffed hands, wanting to test whether my theory was right.Ever since I picked up the car from the dealership, I hadn't gone anywhere except to have the license plates installed. If there was nothing wrong with the car itself, then the problem had to be with me.More precisely, it had to be something I was wearing."Officers, I won't go anywhere. Just let me out of the cuffs for a minute. Please," I pleaded. "My parents are here too. I won't try to escape."The officers exchanged a glance. They had no idea what I was trying to do, but out of compassion, they finally unlocked my cuffs. The moment my hands were free, I ran for the door. The officers were startled and immediately moved to chase me, but they relaxed after only a couple of steps.I wasn't trying to escape, after all.I stopped in front of a desk and grabbed several

Chapter 6

The moment I said that, both officers looked alarmed. Still, they took my claim seriously and brought in an electronics expert, William Reeves.William arrived looking excited, seemingly expecting some kind of cutting-edge technology. However, after examining the components for a while, he tossed them onto the desk."It's just a simple device," he grumbled. "I thought you had something impressive."But when I explained what happened on the interstate, his expression immediately turned serious. After all, so many people had been injured, and the full extent of the accident hadn't been determined yet.The car's brakes had been inspected multiple times, and every inspection found them to be functioning normally. That meant the problem wasn't with the car itself.I picked up the two metal rods and demonstrated what I had figured out."When the roadside technician inspected the car and tested the brakes, everything worked normally. I tested them myself afterward, and they worked too.

Chapter 7

The officers looked confused."If you bought the car, wouldn't he have earned a commission? Why would he try to hurt you?" Tristan asked."Because I didn't buy his car," I said matter-of-factly.My family had owned an old car for years, but we finally decided to retire it.I had been driving for almost 20 years myself, so I knew quite a bit about cars. I had already spent plenty of time researching online before deciding on a car, knowing exactly which model I wanted. When I went to the dealership, I only intended to take it for a test drive. The salesman who approached me that day was Sam Miller. The moment he saw that I was a woman, he decided that I didn't know anything about cars.Even when I told him exactly which model I wanted, he ignored me and started showing me more expensive cars instead.I refused and insisted on test-driving the one I had already chosen, but he laughed dismissively and said, "Women don't know anything about cars. You should wait until your husband

Chapter 8

Just as I finished seeing my parents off, Tristan approached me and said, "Ms. Scott, there's good news. The final casualty count from the crash is in. There were no deaths. Two people were seriously injured, and another ten suffered minor injuries. "However, the two seriously injured victims are both out of danger."I let out a huge sigh of relief.Tristan also told me that they had found the dashcam inside my car. Although it couldn't capture my feet, it had a clear view of my upper body. The footage showed that I had been driving extremely carefully.I had taken my foot off the gas well in advance, slowing the car down and reducing the severity of the accident.Of course, in my previous life, I had no idea the brakes were going to fail.I had been traveling at 120 miles per hour on the interstate. By the time I realized I needed to slow down, it was already too late. But this time, I knew what was coming. Even though the brakes had failed again, I had slowed down beforehand.

Chapter 9

Sam stammered nervously. "I… I saw it online. Everyone knows about the crash. A Thanksgiving pileup like that? It's all over the news."Tristan, the "good" cop, smiled. "Sam, that’s a tired trick. You've watched too many crime shows."We don't need a confession to convict someone. We just need evidence. If you confess now, maybe your cooperation will be taken into consideration."However, Sam's nerves were stronger than we had expected. No matter what the officers asked him, he kept his mouth shut. The interrogation reached a deadlock."Ms. Scott, you can go home for now. Just don't leave the city. We'll contact you immediately if we learn anything," Tristan told me.I shook my head. I didn't want to leave.I wouldn't be able to rest until I saw the man who had nearly destroyed my life twice face justice. I wanted to be there when he finally confessed."No, officer," I refused. "I'm the victim in this case. Maybe I can help you find something.""Alright. Thank you, Ms. Scott."

Chapter 10

The officers agreed with my suggestion and immediately got to work. When they returned with a signal receiver and tossed it onto the interrogation table, Sam froze completely.Clarence scoffed. "Just so we're clear, we found this in your house."He pressed a button. Although the device had been removed from the shoes, the two small metal rods still stood up in response to the signal. He slammed his hand against the table, making Sam flinch. "Ready to start talking?"Before Sam could speak, another officer came in and called the two officers out of the interrogation room. They were working on a separate lead—they were investigating similar incidents throughout the area.As I had suspected, I hadn't been the first victim.Sam had been working at the dealership for years. His sales numbers had always been worse than those of his colleagues, and he had grown bitter toward customers who chose not to buy from him.Every month, he would secretly select customers he disliked and give
