"If he doesn't want to eat, then let him go."Emma was starting to lose patience. She glanced at the lightning outside and scoffed, but her next words hit me harder than I expected."Just don't come running back to me when the thunder starts."When I was a kid, my stepfather Joel Sutton used to abuse me. Sometimes, he would throw me outside in the middle of a storm and leave me there until I passed out.I had been terrified of thunderstorms ever since, and Emma always stayed with me whenever one rolled in. She knew better than anyone how badly they affected me.And yet, just because she was angry, she was still willing to use that fear against me and send me out into the storm."Ow!" Kevin's yelp snapped me out of my thoughts.Emma immediately rushed over to wipe up the hot water he spilled, her voice softening at once. "You burned yourself? Let me finish. Just sit down."Watching them together, I suddenly remembered how Emma and I used to be.I turned, walked out the door,

The living room was packed with friends and relatives, all drinking and talking. When Emma saw me come downstairs in wrinkled pajamas, she frowned."Did you forget the wedding rehearsal is today? My parents have been here forever, and you're seriously coming down looking like that?"Everyone turned to stare at me. Some looked judgmental, while others barely bothered to hide their amusement.Their expressions said it all. What kind of groom showed up to his own wedding rehearsal dressed like this?Emma's face tightened with embarrassment. "Go upstairs and change. At least make yourself look presentable. My whole family is here, and you're the groom."Meanwhile, Kevin stood there in a crisp white suit, looking more like the groom than I did.I ignored Emma's tone and was just about to use the opportunity to call off the engagement in front of everyone. But Kevin quickly came over and pulled me toward someone. "It's a big day, so I thought I'd invite your dad to celebrate with us

"E-Emma?"Kevin shot to his feet, his face draining of color. He quickly tried to cover himself."Why are you here? Did Scott come back?"Emma stared at him as she slowly walked closer. "What did you just say? You paid him to come scare Scott?"Kevin took a step back, clearly flustered. "It wasn't like that. I was just messing around with Mr. Sutton. We know each other, that's all. I didn't mean for any of this to happen."Joel quickly chimed in. "That's right, Emma. I've changed. I only came because I wanted to give my son my blessing."But Emma had heard everything they said and saw the cash on the table with her own eyes. She looked at Kevin in disbelief. The boy she had always cared for and defended since they were kids had been manipulating her all along."Kevin, you told me Joel had changed. That's the only reason I agreed to let you invite him to the wedding. How could you lie to me like that? If I'd known the two of you were in on this together, I never would've let tha

After a moment of stunned silence, Emma slowly walked toward me."Scott..."I instinctively took a step back, watching her warily. "What are you doing here? Didn't your family say you were sick?"Emma stopped short, clearly taken aback. "You knew I was sick, and you still didn't come see me? Do I really mean that little to you?"She obviously couldn't believe it.The old me would've rushed out to get her medicine, made sure she took it, and stayed up all night taking care of her.But that was before. Now, whether she was sick or healthy had nothing to do with me.I gave her a strained smile. "We broke up. I'm not responsible for taking care of you anymore."Before I could react, Emma grabbed me by the shoulders, refusing to accept what I said."Why? What gives you the right to end things without me agreeing to it? I never agreed to break up, and I never will."She sounded so sincere that anyone else might've thought she really cared about me.But I knew better now. I wasn'
