Chapter 1

I took a bite of my hot dog as I watched Jennifer York's name flash across my phone screen. It was slowing me down.I was about to ignore the call when I accidentally brushed the screen with the base of my thumb and answered it.With no choice but to pick up, I asked, "What is it?"Jennifer sounded completely normal. She didn't sound the least bit guilty. "Something came up at work. I'm sorry I can't be with you again. I'll make it up to you another time."I finished my hot dog and reached for another one."Oh, okay. It's fine."There was a hint of confusion in her voice. "Where are you?"I glanced around at the street. The restaurant we'd planned to go to was nowhere near this noisy."Uh, I just felt like getting something to eat, so…"The hot dog was delicious."Why do you always do whatever you want? I had my friend make that reservation for me. If I don't go, it'll be a waste of her favor. What am I supposed to tell her?" she roared, clearly annoyed."Then just tell her

Chapter 2

I had just finished getting dressed and was about to leave when I looked up and saw the conflicted look on Jennifer's face."I've been busy lately, so I haven't had the time to eat breakfast at home," she said. "I'll try to eat at home more often from now on."I smiled. "Don't. I'd rather sleep in a little longer."The extra half hour of sleep had left me feeling surprisingly refreshed.Jennifer looked at me like she wanted to say something, but held back. It wasn't until I reached the door that she finally hurried over and grabbed my hand.I turned to her.She hesitated for a moment. "I didn't see Felix's post until later. He didn't mean anything by it. Nothing happened between us, so don't get the wrong idea."Even after finding out that Felix had made the post, she was still defending him.Whenever I'd complained about something Felix had done, she would frown and tell me I was too narrow-minded and couldn't see the bigger picture. If I kept pushing, she'd get impatient and

I calmly said, "I just don't understand. If a teacher at my school had been there for over six months and was still terrible at their job, they would have been fired."Jennifer let out a long sigh."Okay, okay. I'll make sure he gets up to speed. I'll try not to help him anymore. If you have any student work that you need help with, you can give it to me. I'll take care of it. Is that enough?"Her tone softened. "Anyway, I'm hungry now. Why don't you make me something to eat? It's been so long since we've had a meal together."She was trying to coax me into giving in. She must still remember what happened before."Let's not. You were right before. Everyone should handle their own responsibilities. Besides, I already ate before I came home. Just order something for yourself."Her expression immediately hardened. She fell silent, then turned and slammed the door behind her.…After that, Jennifer and I were back to giving each other the silent treatment.Unlike before, when I'd

Chapter 4

"William, are you seriously planning to keep up with this stubborn act?" Jennifer asked."What have I done?"I genuinely didn't understand what she was talking about."I was drunk! You didn't even care and told another man to come pick me up! Whenever we fought before, you'd look for me the next day. But this time, it's been a whole week, and you haven't even sent me a single message!"Her eyes were red, and it almost looked as if there was fear in her expression."I reflected on things and realized I should give you some space," I began slowly. "I told Felix to pick you up because of that. I decided to trust that you two are really just friends. Isn't that great?"Jennifer had nothing to say. Her chest just rose and fell rapidly.I got up and headed toward the bathroom, but she grabbed my arm."Let's grab some supper. There's a new restaurant nearby."She wanted to pretend as though the whole silent treatment had never happened.I was about to tell her everything and ask for

Chapter 5

"I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have bothered Ms. York. It won't happen again," read Felix's message. "William, Ms. York really loves you. Please don't fight because of me."He sent more than a dozen messages like that, then stopped.Jennifer messaged me again, saying that Felix was still weak and that she needed to stay to look after him a little longer."I'll definitely be home this afternoon!"I ultimately blocked her number.…Despite running into Felix and Jennifer's mess, everything went smoothly with the apartment. I signed the lease right away, and the landlady handed me the keys on the spot.As it turned out, she also owned a moving company. When she heard that I was moving, she sent one of her company's trucks over and gave me a discount.I picked up the luggage I'd packed earlier and left the house I'd lived in for years without looking back.I had barely finished cleaning and unpacking at the new place when I started getting messages from an unfamiliar number."Wil

Chapter 6

"Your company's doing well now, so I don't think it should be a problem if I withdraw my investment," I said.Jennifer's eyes filled with even more panic. "W-Why are you pulling your investment? You said your money would always stay with me.""I'm not going to ask for more than what I put in. I just want you to give me a fair price. So that's why…""No, don't say it. I know you've been angry lately. I'll buy you—""Let's break up."…After that, Jennifer came to my school every day, but I ignored her every time. When she tried to follow me home, I told her that I would call the police, and she had no choice but to stop and watch me walk into the subway station. My new place wasn't exactly a secret, though, so it didn't take her long to find the address.I was startled to see her waiting outside my apartment building when I got home from work. Her eyes were bloodshot, her hair was a mess, and she looked even worse than she had outside the school."William, I don't want to brea

Chapter 7

It wasn't my phone that was ringing. It was Jennifer's.I instinctively glanced at the screen and saw Felix's name flash across it repeatedly. He was saved as "Felix Kenner" instead of just "Felix".The ringtone was different, too."I deleted the custom ringtone I had set for him."Jennifer ignored the call and stared at me nervously. "William, believe me. I really am trying to change!"Still, I was skeptical. "Aren't you going to answer?"She hurriedly shook her head and declined the call."I mean it. From now on, you'll always come first!""Then answer it," I said flatly. "You can't talk about what comes next until you've answered the call."She stared at me for a moment before finally gritting her teeth. "Okay, I'll clear things up with him right now."But Jennifer never got the chance to clear things up with Felix. He started crying on the phone and threatened to kill himself. She rambled about how it was a matter of life and death, but swore she'd make things right wit

Chapter 8

"William, you're not going to forgive me again, are you?" Jennifer rasped.I didn't answer her. "Think carefully about the investment."…Jennifer bought out my shares at a very generous price.Felix wasn't there that day. She had probably made sure that he stayed away."I'm sorry, William."She looked exhausted and worn down. "You live in a great neighborhood. You shouldn't move again. I'll leave."I had no intention of moving. I had packed my things because I had resigned from the school and was planning to take some time off to travel. She was right, though. My place was in a great location. Even without the commute to work, it was still a convenient place to live. Before we parted ways, she held me tightly."I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry…"My shoulder was damp with her tears, but all I felt was irritation.…On the day I left, I received another message from Felix while I was waiting at the airport."I married Jennifer. I really wish you could come to our wedding, but I
