บททั้งหมดของ BLOOD AND ABSOLUTION: บทที่ 1 - บทที่ 10

Two-forty-seven a.m. Blood on the tile in a shape like a question mark. Mira didn't need the chart to know the answer."GSW, right flank, entry and exit." The paramedic talked fast, words tripping over each other, the gurney wheels squealing against linoleum that hadn't been mopped since the last emergency. "BP's dropping. Tachy at one-forty. Two liters in and it's not holding.""Room three." Mira was already moving.Gloves snapped on. Gauze, red before it touched skin. Somewhere behind her a monitor screamed its two-tone alarm and somebody muted it without being asked. The overhead lights buzzed the way they always did at this hour, too bright, a hospital's version of daylight manufactured out of nothing. Two men had wheeled him in. Dark suits, soaked at the shoulder seams, standing too close together the way men stand when they've agreed in advance not to run. One of them had a hand hovering near his jacket like it belonged there, like the gesture had been rehearsed somewhere on

Nine years in the same ER teaches you things about a person they've never said aloud. Elena Rossi knew three about Mira Castell, and by four in the morning she'd start suspecting a fourth.Mira hadn't taken a real vacation since her intern year. She counted stitches under her breath, a habit with nothing to do with skill and everything to do with keeping her hands busy while some other part of her went somewhere she didn't discuss. And something had shifted, eighteen months back — small enough most people would've missed it. Elena had spent years watching Mira the way you watch weather you respect, the kind that can turn without warning if you stop paying attention for even a season.Tonight Mira came through the staff room door looking aged a year past her last break. Elena poured coffee that had been sitting since midnight, tasted like it too, and slid a cup across without being asked. Somewhere down the hall a monitor beeped its slow, patient rhythm. A cart wheel squeaked. A ven

Marco drove with one hand on the wheel, radio low, and it took three quiet minutes before Leo stopped turning the sentence over in his head enough to ask about it."What'd you say to my sister back there?""Nothing important.""She looked like you hit her with something.""Old habit." Marco's jaw worked once. "See faces sometimes that remind me of other faces. Comes with getting older. Ignore it."Leo didn't ignore it. Three weeks riding with this man had taught him that pushing past a closed door only bought a longer silence, so he let it sit, watching the streetlights slide past the window in long orange smears against the wet glass, the wipers ticking their slow metronome across the windshield.Marco reached to adjust the radio. His sleeve rode up — a scar, old, pale, deliberate-looking, along the inside of his forearm, a thin white line that ran nearly to the wrist. He caught Leo looking and pulled the sleeve back down. Practiced. Automatic. The kind of motion a body does withou

Eleven years chaplaining Saint Agnes teaches a man which strangers want a priest and which ones don't. Father Gabriel Moretti had buried more of the second kind than he'd baptized of the first, and tonight, watching a tall man in a dark coat stand too still near the vending machines, he already suspected which one this was."You're not visiting a patient," Gabriel said, settling onto the bench without asking. "You're waiting on one who's finishing with someone else."The man glanced over. Assessing. "Father.""You know the collar. Good — saves the small talk." Gabriel folded his hands. "Seen you before. Years back. Man who didn't make it. You stood outside his room a long while. Said no thank you when I offered to sit. Walked out into the rain without a coat."Something shifted behind the man's eyes. "You remember that.""I remember the ones who say no thank you politely instead of ignoring me. Tells me something. A man's got manners left when there's nothing left to gain from using

"You're still there," Mira said, because he was, and the silence had gone on long enough to notice, long enough that she'd started counting the seconds without meaning to, an old habit left over from monitoring a flatline that refused to resolve one way or the other."I am." He said it simply, without the guarded weight most of his sentences carried, and something about the plainness of it caught her off guard more than a longer answer would have."Most people fill silence with something. Small talk. Static. Anything.""I've never been most people." A pause, a small hiss of breath that told her his side hurt more than he'd admit. "Does it bother you? The quiet?""No." True, and it surprised her, saying it out loud, hearing how easily it came. "Quiet's the only time I'm not performing something for someone. Patients want confidence. Family wants hope. Residents want certainty I don't always actually have. Quiet doesn't want anything from me at all, and there's a relief in that I don
