Chapter 1

"Ann, why'd you delete all the photos from your social media?" Colin asked as he emerged from the bathroom, drying his hair.I locked my phone and set it aside."No reason. They felt kind of cheesy, so I got rid of them," I said lightly.Colin walked over, slipped an arm around my waist, and pulled me against him."What's cheesy about that?" he chuckled. "Changing my username to make my wife smile—that's exactly what a husband should do."He rested his chin on top of my head, his voice warm with affection.I turned my face just enough to avoid his touch. "I drove your car to pick up my mom today. There was a new bluetooth device in the paired list."I looked him straight in the eyes. The hand rubbing his hair paused for the briefest moment."What device?" His expression didn't change."It's called 'LoveHasAThousandKnots,'" I said, emphasizing every word.Colin didn't react at all."Oh, that." He tossed the towel onto the back of a chair. "That's our new intern, Dakota Delac

Chapter 2

The next morning, I got up and made breakfast as usual.Colin wrapped his arms around me from behind."Morning, honey. What are you making?" His voice was warm and affectionate."Sandwiches and warm milk."He frowned. "Sandwiches again? I was craving breakfast sliders.""The breakfast place downstairs is closed today," I replied evenly. In the past, if he said he wanted something, I would've walked two extra blocks just to buy it for him, but now I didn't feel like doing that anymore.Colin looked at me in surprise. "Never mind, then."He paused before adding, "I've got a business dinner tonight, so I won't be home.""Okay." I didn't ask who he was meeting, nor did I remind him to drink less.He stopped halfway through putting on his shoes and looked back at me, as if waiting for me to say something.I simply looked back without speaking. In the end, he said nothing. He opened the door and left. The moment it clicked shut, I let out a long breath. That afternoon, I stopped

Chapter 3

Over the next few days, I made a point of keeping my distance from Colin. When he worked late, I stopped waiting up for him. When he had business dinners, I stopped calling to check on him. When he came home, I no longer fussed over whether he'd eaten or if he was tired.Instead, I began packing up my own things. Little by little, I erased every trace of myself from the house.Colin seemed to notice the change. He started trying every way he could think of to win me over. One day it was a necklace. The next, reservations at an upscale restaurant."Honey, let's go to a hot springs resort this weekend," he suggested over dinner. "You've been working too hard lately. I want to take you somewhere you can relax."He placed a piece of fish on my plate. I looked down at it but didn't touch my fork."This weekend I'm going to my mom's."Colin's hand froze. "Then I'll come with you," he said immediately."That's not necessary. Didn't you say you had to work this weekend?" I looked up

The day after I turned in my resignation, I received my transfer notice from headquarters. My request had finally been approved. I was being assigned to our London office for three years.I signed the paperwork without a moment's hesitation.During my final days before leaving, I began clearing out the house.Matching outfits, photos of us together… One by one, I packed them into garbage bags and threw them away.Colin stared at the half-empty closet. At last, he couldn't hold back anymore. "Ann, what are you doing?""I'm getting rid of clothes I don't wear anymore. The seasons are changing." I didn't even look up as I kept packing."Those clothes are perfectly fine!" His voice rose."I don't like them anymore."He strode over and grabbed my wrist."What the hell's been going on with you lately?" There was a flicker of panic in his eyes. "You don't argue with me anymore. You barely even acknowledge me. What are you trying to do?"I looked at him quietly. "I'm not trying to do

Chapter 5

Colin was calling.I stared at his name flashing across the screen and didn't answer. The phone rang until it finally stopped. A second later, it started ringing again.I powered my phone off. At last, the world fell silent.I took out my boarding pass and glanced at the departure time.Thirty minutes until takeoff.Closing my eyes, I drew in a slow, deep breath.'Colin, I don't want you anymore.'The boarding announcement echoed through the terminal.I stood, pulled my suitcase behind me, and walked into the jet bridge without looking back. The moment my plane landed in London, I turned my phone back on. The screen was instantly flooded with missed calls and messages. Every single one was from Colin."Ann, where are you?""You never went to your mom's! I called her, and she said you never showed up!""Why did you leave your wedding ring behind?""Ann, answer your phone!""Honey, I was wrong. Please don't scare me. Where are you?"The last message had been sent just ten

"Ann, please... just let me explain." Colin took a frantic step toward me. "There was never anything between Dakota and me. You've got it all wrong."I looked at him, wondering how someone could be so absurd."Wrong?" I let out a cold laugh."Wrong about you wearing our wedding ring while you bought her lipstick?""Wrong about you skipping my birthday to cook dinner for her?""Wrong about you lying about working late when you were really taking her to the hospital?"With every accusation, the color drained further from Colin's face. His eyes widened, and his lips trembled."Y-You... you knew?""Yes." I looked at him calmly. "I knew everything. Did you really think you'd hidden it that well? Did you really think I was too stupid to notice?"I was giving you a chance. A chance to tell me the truth. But not once did you take it."Panic completely overtook him. He lunged forward, trying to pull me into his arms.I shoved him away."Don't touch me!" My voice rang across the balc

Chapter 7

Colin stayed in London for an entire month. He abandoned everything back home, obsessively lingering around every corner of my daily life.My colleagues started whispering among themselves. Some even asked if I wanted to call the police.I never did. I simply acted as though he didn't exist.Every meal he brought me went straight into the trash without ever being opened. Every bouquet he sent was refused at the front desk. When he stood outside in the rain waiting for me to get off work, I walked right past him beneath my umbrella without so much as a glance. With nothing but quiet indifference, I slowly shattered his resolve. One afternoon, about a month later, I was in the middle of a meeting when the receptionist called."Director Richardson, there's a woman downstairs asking to see you. She says her name is Dakota Delacruz."My grip on my pen tightened ever so slightly. What was she doing here?"Have her wait in the lobby."After the meeting ended, I took the elevato

"So you actually think this proves how much you love me?" I looked at him coldly. "You dumped all the blame onto another woman, destroyed her life, and expected me to praise you for it."Colin, you've never believed any of this was your fault. You've convinced yourself she seduced you and that she ruined our marriage."The arrogance and selfishness buried inside you make me sick."Colin staggered back two steps. He stared at me in disbelief, completely stunned."No, that's not true..." He shook his head frantically. "Ann, I did it for you...""Shut up!" I cut him off sharply. "Don't use me as an excuse. You're only trying to make yourself feel better."Colin, this is the last time I'm warning you. Get out of my life. And don't ever show your face in front of me again."I turned and walked into my apartment building, telling the security guard to stop Colin from following me inside. It rained hard that night. From my apartment window, I watched him stand out in the pouring rai

I walked straight to the car parked at the curb.As I opened the driver's door, I caught one last glimpse in the rearview mirror.Colin was still struggling in his wheelchair, desperately trying to throw himself toward me. Diane held him down with all her strength.Under the bright sunlight, the two of them looked utterly defeated.I looked away and started the engine. As the tires rolled smoothly over the pavement, their cries faded farther and farther into the distance.Back at the hotel, I received a call from one of my colleagues in London. "Director Richardson, everything's wrapped up here. When would you like to fly back?""Book me on tomorrow afternoon's flight." I walked over to the window and pulled the curtains open."Absolutely. I'll take care of it right away."After hanging up, I gazed out at the city I'd called home for five years. It has given me the happiest years of my youth and the deepest lesson of my life. Now it was finally time to say goodbye. The next mo

Chapter 10

Three years later.London's winters were still as damp and bitterly cold as ever.I sat in my bright office, reviewing the latest financial reports."Director Richardson, here's next quarter's budget proposal. It just needs your signature." My assistant handed me the folder.I took the pen and signed my name at the bottom of the last page."Oh, one more thing." I handed the file back to her. "Is everything ready for tonight's celebration?""Yes. Everything's been arranged." She smiled. "The acquisition of the legacy design firm was a huge success. Headquarters couldn't be happier."I nodded.Over the past three years, I'd poured every ounce of my energy into my career. From Finance Director to Vice President of the London office, I'd earned my place through my own abilities. That evening, the celebration was held at a luxury hotel.Dressed in an evening gown with a glass of champagne in hand, I accepted congratulations from colleagues and business partners."Annika, you're a
