Chapter 1

“Grace has really taken her jealous little games to a new low. Now, she is even pretending to drown.”Colin Mack carefully lowered Kimmy Ames onto the sofa in the staff lounge. He grabbed a towel and wrapped it snugly around her.Kimmy shivered. Her eyes looked teary.“Colin, do you think Grace is mad at me? I’m such a slow learner. I still can’t get the breathing right, and you’ve had to stay in the shallow end teaching me. “She looked like she was in so much pain when she fell. You should go check on her.”Colin scoffed. He poured her a glass of water and pressed it into her hands.“You’re too kind for your own good. She has advanced lifeguard certification and can hold her breath underwater for three minutes. There’s no way she’d drown in a pool like that.”Kimmy gazed out at the pouring rain.“Colin, it’s raining so hard. Are you sure Grace is okay?”“Let her stay in the water for a while. Maybe she’ll finally learn her lesson.”My spirit hovered above them, quietly ta

Kimmy sneezed.Colin immediately rose to his feet in alarm.“Did you catch a chill earlier?”Kimmy rubbed her nose. Her voice was thick with congestion.“I’m fine, Colin. My clothes are just a little wet, and they feel cold against my skin.”Colin turned and headed toward the staff locker room.He entered the combination from memory and opened my personal locker.Inside was a brand-new pink tracksuit, neatly folded on the shelf.I had saved two months’ wages to buy matching outfits for us to wear on our anniversary.Without hesitation, Colin took it out.He also helped himself to the limited-edition microfiber hair drying cap hanging inside the locker door.“Put this on.”Colin handed the clothes to Kimmy. When Kimmy saw the brand tag, she immediately waved her hands in refusal.“No, I can’t! This is Grace’s favorite brand, and it’s really expensive. She hasn’t even worn it herself. She’ll be furious if I do.”Colin firmly pressed the clothes into her arms. “She has pl

Ben’s voice rose an octave in panic.“She’s not causing trouble! Get over here right now, and bring the first-aid kit!”Colin scoffed and switched off the walkie-talkie.He turned to Kimmy and spread his hands in defeat.“See? She’s even managed to get Mr. Robinson to play along. She’ll do anything to make me give in.”Kimmy set down her fork and looked at him anxiously.“Colin, Mr. Robinson is usually very serious. I don’t think he’d joke about something like this. Maybe you should go and take a look. If something really has happened to Grace, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”Colin placed a piece of chicken on Kimmy’s plate. “Why should I feel guilty? She made her own choice. She jumped into that pool herself. She’s perfectly able-bodied and a trained lifeguard. “You honestly think she could drown in the pool where she works? She’s making such a production of this because she knows I’ll give in if I get worried. If I go running to her now, her stunts will only g

Kimmy cautiously studied Colin’s face.“Colin, what’s wrong? Who was it?”Colin shoved the phone into his pocket. His voice was full of contempt.“Some actor Grace hired. He’s pretending to be a police officer and telling me that she’s drowned. Does she think I’m as stupid as she is?”Kimmy covered her mouth in shock.“How could Grace joke about something like that? Pretending someone has died is going way too far! Colin, she’s really crossed the line this time.”Colin scoffed.“I’ve spoiled her rotten. She thinks all she has to do is cause a scene, and I’ll come running back to beg for her forgiveness.”Kimmy took Colin’s arm and gave it a gentle tug.“Colin, maybe we should go and check. She’s caused such a commotion that it might affect business, and the boss will blame you. I’ll apologize to her and ask her to stop.”Seeing how sweet and considerate Kimmy was only made Colin side with her even more.“You’re too kind. Okay, I’ll take you back. Let’s see how far Grace keep

My right hand hung at a grotesque angle.Colin remained frozen in place. He was still clutching the edge of the sheet.“Grace…”He called my name softly.“Stop this! The makeup is convincing, I’ll give you that. You even added lividity. Now get up. The floor’s cold.”His hands trembled as he reached for my arm. When he touched me, he felt only the cold stiffness of death. The unmistakable rigidity of a corpse sent a chill through his entire body.Colin snatched his hand back. One of the forensic investigators frowned and shoved him away.“What do you think you’re doing? Don’t touch the body! Tampering with a corpse is a crime!”The officers quickly rushed forward and restrained Colin.Colin struggled desperately. His eyes fixed on my mangled right arm.“No, that’s impossible! She’s an excellent swimmer. She has advanced lifeguard certification! She can hold her breath underwater for three minutes! How could she possibly drown?”The medical examiner gave him a cold look an

The officer knocked Colin’s hand away and hauled him to his feet.“Are you the victim’s next of kin? You’ll need to come to the station and give a statement.”Colin did not seem to hear him.He stared at the shattered half of the red glass heart. His lips were trembling uncontrollably.“She isn’t dead. She can’t be dead! There must be something wrong with the park’s equipment!”He suddenly pointed toward the wave pool and shouted, “Why did the wave machine suddenly start? Why was there such a strong current around the drain? This is your fault! The park is responsible!”Ben pushed his way through the crowd. His face was livid.“Stop with the baseless accusations, Colin!“The wave machine started at its scheduled time. You were the lifeguard on duty. How could you not know that? The current formed because something was blocking the drain cover. “Mrs. Moura warned you, but you insisted it was only debris and refused to have maintenance check it!”Ben’s words struck Colin like

Colin gripped the paper so tightly that his knuckles turned white. His eyes remained fixed on the word “Withdrawal.”“What system? What mission?”His voice was hoarse as he muttered to himself.“Grace, what kind of game are you playing now?”He yanked open a drawer and began rummaging through it frantically. He wanted to find proof that this was another prank, or a travel confirmation showing that I had secretly gone somewhere.Colin pulled so hard that the drawer crashed to the floor, scattering its contents everywhere. There was no travel confirmation, only an old medical report inside. Its pages had yellowed with age.Colin picked it up and opened it.The most recent entry was dated two weeks earlier.[Chronic injury to the radius in the right arm. Avoid lifting heavy objects. No strenuous physical activity.]Colin’s eyes narrowed. Two weeks earlier, Kimmy had been moving into a new apartment and thought the movers were too expensive.Colin volunteered to help.He had

The sirens of fire engines shattered the silence of the night.By the time the firefighters broke down the door, thick smoke had filled the living room.Colin’s face was black with soot, and he clung desperately to my old jacket.“Sir, you need to get out!”The firefighters grabbed him and dragged him outside.Colin fought against them and pointed frantically toward the empty bedroom.“Let go of me! My girlfriend’s still in there! She’s afraid of fire! She’ll be terrified in there all alone!”The firefighters pulled him from the burning apartment and held him down on a stretcher beside the ambulance. The next day, Colin was discharged from the hospital. He did not return to the fire-ravaged apartment.Instead, he went straight to the water park. The park had been closed pending an investigation into my death. The gates were locked, and police tape surrounded the property.Colin climbed over the chain-link fence and wandered toward the deep end.The wave pool had been part

News of Colin’s dismissal quickly spread through the employee group chat.Soon afterward, a post about him went viral on a local online forum. The title read, [Exposing the Twisted Lifeguard Who Let His Girlfriend Die.]The post detailed how Colin had constantly favored another woman over me and ultimately left me to die.It even included screenshots of Colin forcing open my locker and giving my clothes to the other woman. The person behind the post claimed to be an employee at the water park.Colin recognized the writing style immediately. It was Kimmy.Phone in hand, Colin tracked down Kimmy’s apartment. He pounded on the door. When Kimmy opened it and saw him, she recoiled in fear.“W-What are you doing here?”Colin held up his phone. His voice was frighteningly calm.“You wrote that post, didn’t you?”Kimmy avoided his gaze. She was struggling to maintain her composure.“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Colin, I’m sorry about what happened to Grace, but that w

Colin scrambled to his feet.He sprinted toward the billboard.“Grace! Grace!”He ran blindly into traffic, setting off a chorus of screams and screeching brakes.A cab swerved to a stop inches from him. The driver leaned out the window and shouted furiously at him.Colin did not even hear him.He reached the billboard and stared up at the familiar figure on the screen.“You’re alive! I knew you were alive!”As the commercial ended, the diving club’s address appeared on the screen. It was in an upscale shopping district downtown.Colin took off running.A torrential downpour began without warning. The cold rain pelted Colin and washed the mud from his clothes. He finally reached the diving club.Through its enormous floor-to-ceiling windows, he saw me.Dressed in a perfectly tailored business suit, I sat on a sofa by the window and listened as the manager briefed me.Colin threw himself against the glass and pounded on it.“Grace! Grace, look at me!”I looked up. My g
