Chapter 1

I was completely caught off guard. I stared at Emily Carter and my parents, Nathan Morgan and Jennifer Williams, in disbelief. They all seemed to be waiting for me to take off the ring. Freddie Morgan raised an eyebrow at me, his tone playful. "Richard, you're not seriously going back on your word, are you?"Mom chimed in with a laugh. "Come on, Richard. Freddie just wants to wear it for a couple of days. Don't be so possessive. You made the bet, so you have to honor it."I lowered my eyes with a bitter smile. The ring was painfully tight around my ring finger, but I forced it off and handed it to Emily. A red mark remained across my finger where the ring had been."Here."Emily took the ring and carefully slipped it onto Freddie's ring finger. "I thought Freddie was too young to pull off this blue diamond ring, but it actually looks better on him than it did on Richard." My parents beamed as they admired it on Freddie."Freddie, be careful with it. Don't lose it, or you

"After I return, I'll take you to Montavia for our honeymoon. Just the two of us this time. We won't tell anyone."She gave me a brief hug to comfort me before eagerly returning to the party hall to discuss the itinerary with my parents.I stared at the travel plans I'd spent more than two weeks researching on my phone. A hollow ache settled in my chest as I realized how meaningless all that effort suddenly felt.True to her word, Emily moved the trip up to three days later. For the three days leading up to it, I barely saw Emily or my parents at home. Freddie was ecstatic, posting nearly eight updates a day about the trip. Whenever they came home, they brought back bag after bag of Freddie's travel gear until there was barely enough room to walk.So I started staying late at the office, giving myself every excuse not to come home. When I finally went home three days later, the house was empty. Freddie had posted a photo of the four of them at the airport with the caption, "F

Chapter 3

Freddie kept urging me to open the short-video app. I clicked on his profile and saw that he had posted a new video just 30 minutes earlier. It was one of those popular couples' videos. Freddie lay on the bed, holding onto Emily's arm as she pulled him to his feet. They looked incredibly close, and the comments were filled with congratulations. "Wow, what a gorgeous couple! Wishing you two a lifetime of happiness!" "I was too busy getting people to like my videos. I should've been shipping you two this whole time." "I heard the CEO of Carter Group is getting married soon. Could her fiance actually be this guy?" "Oh my god, I'm shipping them so hard!" Similar comments filled the post. My expression gradually hardened. Each congratulatory comment twisted the knife deeper. Freddie, meanwhile, was still grinning proudly. He even liked a comment suggesting that he was Emily's fiance."Richard, you've always been the best! When we were kids, I hated sleeping in a separate ro

The moment I apologized, it felt as though the last shred of my dignity had been trampled under her heel. Emily lowered the phone, leaving the screen facing the ceiling. Just before the call ended, I heard her gentle voice coming from the other end. "Freddie, he apologized. Don't be mad at him. I already bought that ruby brooch you liked yesterday. Consider it your graduation gift. You'll see it when we get back from the trip." The call ended there. I braced myself against the desk as sadness filled my heart. …Ten days later, their trip to Azure Isles came to an end. Freddie's location on social media showed that he was back downtown, while I had already moved my belongings out of the house and temporarily rented an apartment near the office. For the next two weeks, I stayed busy wrapping up the projects. One evening, Mom sent me a photo. On the table was the lasagna she had prepared herself, along with some pudding—the kind I loved. "You're so stubborn when you're

Chapter 5

When I got home, the rain had picked up. Rain pounded against the windows, turning everything outside into a blur of white. I changed clothes and took a hot shower. When I stepped out, I couldn't help sneezing. I changed into warm, clean pajamas and made myself some tea in the kitchen. Then I checked the fridge, took out the chicken and mushrooms I'd bought a few days ago, and put them into a pot to simmer. Before long, the house was filled with the light, comforting aroma of chicken and mushroom stew. I settled onto the couch and watched the latest drama on TV. For the first time in a long while, I felt completely at peace. The realtor, Jason Moore, messaged me asking for photos of the entire house. I took the pictures and sent them over, then slowly looked around. Somehow, the place felt like somewhere I hadn't stepped into in a lifetime. I'd saved for years after graduation and bought this little house. It wasn't big, but it was the first place I'd ever truly called home

Chapter 6

After hanging up, Jason showed the young man, Stephen Smith, around the house. Stephen looked pretty young. "Stephen only graduated a few years ago and has saved up some money. He wants to settle down and make a home in the city," Jason said. "I'm sure you two can work something out." I nodded. There was still some cold pizza in the house that I'd bought two days ago. I offered some to them since I wouldn't be able to finish it anyway. "I'm starting a new job in another city next week. If you really like the place, I'm willing to negotiate on the price. I'd prefer to finish the paperwork before then. I may not come back to this city afterward."I only bought the place a few years ago, and I barely lived here. Everything is still in great shape, with hardly any signs of wear. It's perfect for someone living alone."I looked around the house. "If you're interested, you can have all the furniture and decorations with the house." I wouldn't be able to take them with me anyway.

Chapter 7

In the new city, I rented a place near my office while I settled in. The cutthroat environment at Carter Group had taught me to work well under pressure, so I adapted quickly to my new job. Before long, I was bringing in new business for the company. Meanwhile, Freddie kept texting me. "Richard, why haven't you been coming into the office lately? Don't you want to work with me?"It wasn't my idea to intern at Carter Group. Emily said you'd be able to look out for me while I got settled into a new environment."Richard, why didn't you tell me the food in the Carter Group cafeteria was so good? When are you coming back? We should grab lunch together!"Richard, I was only joking around on graduation day. You're not actually mad at me, are you?"Please don't be mad. I'll have Mom make your favorite shrimp tacos tonight. Come home for dinner, okay?"I didn't reply to any of his messages. Then, unexpectedly, Mom—who had rarely texted me—sent me a string of messages. "Richard, wh

Chapter 8

A while later, Emily sent me a string of text messages. "I'm sorry, okay? I'm really sorry. "Freddie is your brother. I only took care of him because of you. If it really bothers you, I won't go to your house anymore, okay?"Her messages were full of complaints and irritation. I opened her profile, then blocked and deleted her number. She could no longer text me.Two minutes later, she used a new number to call me. I was annoyed, but I answered. "Richard, what the hell are you doing? Are you seriously giving me the silent treatment? You skipped work. Do you realize I can fire you?" She then threatened me. "Apologize to Freddie and make it up to him. Otherwise—""Otherwise what?" I cut her off. "You'll hand my projects to someone else? Emily, do you even know that all three of my projects are already completed?"She fell silent. Of course she didn't know. Ever since she proposed to me, she had trusted me more and more, leaving much of the company's work in my hands. She

She immediately called her assistant, Max Drip. "I want to know when Richard resigned."Max answered respectfully, "Ms. Carter, according to our records, Mr. Morgan submitted his resignation a month ago. You were the one who approved it."Emily froze. She forced herself to remember what had happened a month ago. She had been in Azure Isles, surrounded by sunshine, islands, and crystal-blue water. She had been taking photos of Freddie, too.He had wanted to try a dessert from a popular spot, so she had driven two hours just to get him a slice of that cake.At the time, she had thought about how different Freddie was from me. Freddie liked sweet things, and a little time and money were enough to make him happy. On the other hand, I was strong. To her, I seemed capable of carrying every burden on my own, never needing her to worry about me. I had never shown her how exhausted I really was. But now, she realized she might have been ignoring my needs all along. She remembere

Chapter 10

When the phone rang, I was busy with work.It kept ringing relentlessly, so I had no choice but to answer. "Richard, have you lost your mind?" Mom shouted. "Carter Group is the best company you'll ever be able to work for, and you actually resigned?"Then came the demand. "Get back there, apologize to Emily, and be back at work tomorrow."I irritably tapped my fingers against the desk. "Mom, I already have a new job, and I sold my house. I'm never returning to the Carter Group. Stop bugging me about that."And Emily and I aren't getting married. We've broken up. Make sure you tell our relatives and friends about it."I hung up. To make sure none of them could contact me again, I blocked Emily, Freddie, and my parents. I even blocked relatives who might help my mother reach me.Life became much quieter. A little over a month later, I had finally settled into the city, and work was going better than ever. I contacted a real estate agent and started looking for a new home.
