Chapter 1

When my sister and I were born, our parents, Marcus and Elena, called in a witch named Cassandra Moore to read our futures.Cassandra pointed at my tiny body. "This child is extraordinary. One day, she'll awaken a wolf more powerful than an Alpha's!"My older sister, Wendy Bennett, had spent years as an Omega in her little sister's shadow and was already struggling with depression. And according to the prophecy, on the day of my awakening, my wolf would rip her to pieces. To save Wendy, they immediately placed the heat curse on me to prevent my awakening. Now, with my chest burning, Wendy's voice drifted through the door."Dad, Mom, maybe we should let Valeria out. She's so talented. If she can't awaken, it'll hold back the whole pack...""You're just too kind for your own good!"My mother's tone was equal parts frustration and urgency."You're still defending her? Have you forgotten the year she won the fitness trials, and how she rubbed it in your face?"I knew exactly which time she

"Ma'am."A hand caught my mother's wrist. It was Cedric Hale, my childhood sweetheart. He had grown up beside me, born on the same day, and we'd promised to fight side by side after we awakened. Now he stood at the chamber door with a resigned frown."Valeria's always been this stubborn. Nothing you say right now is going to get through to her."He took a steadying breath and turned to face the chamber."Come on, Valeria... I know this feels unfair. But Wendy is innocent in all of this. Just behave this time, okay?"No answer came from inside.Because I was already too weak to answer. The heat had drained the last bit of moisture from my body. My head was still slumped against the door. The blood on my forehead had dried to my face.Warm fluid kept streaming down.I stared at the seam around the door.Mom... you opened the door. I was so close to being saved. But the light vanished in an instant. The door was shut again.I heard Cedric's voice from the other side."Don't worry, Valeria

Just then, my father called out from the other room."What are you doing over there? Wendy needs her moonherb broth tonight to strengthen her wolf."My mother answered him and shut the door again."We'll deal with you once your sister's better!"She turned and walked away without a second thought.Inside, my body was slumped against the door.Heat-darkened patches had already spread across my body.I floated in the void, watching her retreating figure in despair.Mom, you were just one turn away. You would have seen my body. That night, Wendy realized I was still in the heat chamber. She sent me a text."Valeria, I hid the key under the doormat. Try to get the door open and eat something. There's fresh steak in the kitchen. I saved it from dinner for you. You've been starving so long, just warm it up a little before you eat. I also hid a little fan under the couch for you. Don't forget to grab it!"Wendy remembered that I loved meat and hated the heat.Every time I'd been locked in the

Mom, if only you'd looked at me carefully. You would have noticed the uneven discoloration on my body, and that my chest wasn't rising or falling. You were so close to realizing I was already dead. With the help of potions, Wendy's wolf finally awakened. She looked at our parents, her expression serious."Now I'm a strong wolf too! I'll be fine. Can we please go let my sister out?"My father nodded. As he started the car, he finally let out a sigh of relief."Finally, it's all over. We'll head back now. Valeria's probably come to her senses by now. Let's pick her up and go pray at the Moon Goddess shrine together!"My mother sat in the passenger seat, tears slipping down her cheeks."We've been too hard on Valeria. From now on, whatever Wendy has, Valeria will have too."I floated in the void, forcing myself to smile.I'd waited eighteen years for this day.But I would never live to see it.They finally came home. Wendy ran in first. She opened the door and froze. Not a single bite of

My parents took Wendy out for three days. The whole family drove to the Moon Goddess altar. As they prayed reverently, our parents thanked the Moon Goddess that Wendy hadn't remained an Omega. They bowed in reverence and lit sacred incense, giving thanks that Wendy's awakening had gone smoothly and that she could now contribute to the pack.Wendy knelt beside them, head bowed in earnest prayer. Her lips moved over a prayer for my safety.I stood nearby in silence, and then I heard her whisper."It was only a witch's prophecy, but my sister has suffered so much because of it. I don't care whether I'm strong or not. I just want her to awaken safely and be happy."Wendy reverently plucked a branch of laurel from the sacred tree. The moment she pulled it free, the branch snapped.Wendy's panic surged again."Dad, Mom! I have a bad feeling. Something's happened to Valeria."Wendy's alarm only irritated our mother."What could possibly happen to her? You're just too naive. She wants you to f

The heat chamber door was thrown wide open.My body had mummified, still sitting on the floor. The side of my head that had rested against the door was charred. My mother collapsed to the ground. She tried to stand again and again, but her legs wouldn't hold her.In the end, she crawled toward me.On her knees, she crawled across the scalding floor, inching closer to my body. She tried to reach for me.But her fingertips met only a rigid, hardened form."Valeria... how could this happen?"She choked out the words, her voice shaking beyond recognition."I set it properly... Valeria, my daughter..."Then she saw it.Her eyes drifted to the temperature panel on the wall.149°F.The number glowed a searing red.Her throat clamped shut as if stuffed with burning ash, unable to produce a single sound. She crumpled in place, her whole body shaking violently, as though she herself were engulfed in flames. My father charged toward me in a frenzy. He wanted to lift me up.He wanted to save me.H

Somehow, news of what happened reached the Alpha King.Half an hour later, our home was cordoned off.My body was lifted onto a stretcher. The court's medical examiner carefully examined my remains. When the report was placed before my parents, they broke down completely.[Deceased: Valeria Bennett. Cause of death: heatstroke. Estimated time of death: six days prior.]"Six days. That's exactly how long it took for Wendy's wolf-strengthening treatment."My father's voice was barely above a whisper. He stared blankly at the cause of death, scenes from the past days flooding through his mind. Then his entire body began to shake uncontrollably."That morning, she knelt and begged us. Her forehead was bleeding, and she begged us to let her awaken.""And I used my Alpha authority to keep her inside, to keep her locked in the heat chamber."Beside him, my mother let out a raw, despairing wail."She was banging on the door! She cried that it was too hot! I thought she was just being difficult!

She read through them, one by one.The first entry:[The pack's moonstone revealed that I might carry a Supreme Alpha bloodline... After awakening, I'd far surpass my sister. I don't feel the slightest bit of joy. I'm terrified to go home. The moment I show any talent, my parents will lock me in the heat chamber. I'm so scared.]The second entry:[They locked me in the heat chamber again. Mother berated me, asking over and over whether I had deliberately released my Alpha pressure to hurt Wendy. It was so unfair. I had never tried to hurt her. The sealed room burns my skin. The heat is unbearable. But Wendy secretly stuffed cooling patches and cooling potions inside the stuffed dog for me... It feels so much better. I think I can hold on.]The third entry:[Elder Pierce nominated me to lead the new warrior squad. I turned it down at once. I didn't dare accept. Last time I joined training, my parents treated me coldly for three whole days and deliberately shut me out. The witch said my

From that day on, Cedric lost his mind. After his awakening, he kept breaking into our house, knocking on the sealed heat chamber door over and over."Valeria, open up! I know you're in there. Stop messing around. We're supposed to have our Blue Moon ceremony."His mother wept, telling him I was gone and that the fated bond between us had severed.Cedric acted as if he hadn't heard a word. The next day, he came back again. This time he stood guard at the door and pulled out his phone."Valeria, I'm calling your parents right now. They'll let you out any minute. Don't be scared. I'm calling right now."He held the phone to his ear and waited for a long time. No one answered.Phone in hand, he sat outside our door the entire afternoon.Eventually, his parents came to take him home. They moved with their pack to another territory.I heard he locked himself in his room every day, scrolling through our old messages over and over. Then he would hold the moonstone that carried the remnants of

Chapter 10

That night, Wendy slept on the stone floor at the foot of the Moon Goddess statue. She had shifted into her wolf form, which looked strikingly like mine.I entered her dream. It was the first time she'd seen me since my death.Clean clothes covered my body, and I looked whole again.I was no longer the horrifying, mummified thing I'd become.I looked just as I had when I was alive, and I smiled at her.Wendy froze, then threw herself at me and held on tight."Valeria, my little sister!"She kissed my forehead and cheeks, trying to make sure I was real."Valeria, I failed to protect you. There were so many chances. I could've made Mom and Dad open that door...""Are you still hot? Does it still hurt?"I smiled and shook my head at her."I'm okay, Wendy. Don't be sad anymore."She held me, sobbing."It's my fault. I knew something was wrong the whole time. I should've smashed that door open myself!""Wendy, you did more than enough. Really.""In all these eighteen years, I never once reg
