Chapter 1

Andy's POVThe door clicked shut and was locked. I pulled the handle, but it wouldn't budge. Nadine Grant had locked me in the car like I was some kind of nuisance. My phone buzzed, and I saw it was a photo from Nick Lockwood. In the picture, the coffee set I had spent two weeks picking out was already on the table. Nadine's father, Patrick Grant, was holding the massager I had spent so long choosing, grinning from ear to ear.Nick sent another message. He wrote, "Mr. Grant loves it. Don't worry, Andy. I'll make a good first impression on your behalf."I stared at the screen, my fingers slowly going numb.I had gone to three different stores before I found that coffee set.I saved two months' worth of pay to buy the massager. Patrick's back was bad, and I had written down all those little details in my notes. And now, they were being passed off as Nick's gifts.I called Nadine. It rang for a long time before she finally answered, with laughter filling the background."Andy

Andy's POVNick smiled and spoke up from behind Nadine, "Relax, Andy. I'm just taking care of the formal introductions for you."The tarot card says you'll attract troubles today, so you shouldn't go near Mrs. Grant Senior. I'll greet her for you."As soon as he finished speaking, Mary's voice came from the living room, "Mr. Grant, Mrs. Grant Senior is coming out."Patrick immediately urged Nick to hurry, "Nick, go get ready. Don't keep everyone waiting."Nick smirked at me and said, "Okay."A short while later, Mary brought out a rosewood box. Inside was a gold locket.Patrick looked at Nadine, unable to hide how pleased he was. "Mom saved this for your future husband. Since Nick's here today, let him wear it for now."Nick slowly walked over, his eyes fixed on the gold locket in the box. "Mr. Grant, this is too valuable. I really shouldn't wear it."Nick said he didn't want it, but his hand was already reaching for it.He looked at me and deliberately wound the chain around

Andy's POVMary moved my place card to the table by the door. The driver and a few of Nadine's distant relatives were seated there.I didn't argue because she had promised to introduce me to everyone once dinner started.Soon, one of Nadine's aunts spoke up with a smile, "Nadine, since you've already introduced Nick to the family, when are you two getting engaged?"Melinda patted Nick's hand, beaming. "It's time you two made it official. I'm waiting for a great-grandchild."Just as I was about to get up, a message from Nadine came through. "Grandma's happy. Don't ruin the mood."Another message popped up. "I'll explain later."Even admitting I was her boyfriend had to wait.Just then, Mary walked over with a set of keys. Nick took them from her and casually set them on the table.I recognized them immediately. They were the spare keys to the house Nadine and I were supposed to live in after we got married.I stared at the keys and asked, "Why do you have the keys to our new h

Andy's POVThe next day, Nadine came to see me. By the time she arrived, I had already packed my documents and clothes. She opened a takeout container and pushed a breakfast sandwich toward me."Let's put yesterday behind us," she said. "I've already confirmed the engagement party with the hotel. It's happening tonight."I looked up at her. "It's tonight?""Yeah." Nadine sat down across from me. "Grandma mistook Nick for my boyfriend yesterday. I know you were hurt."Tonight, I'll introduce you to all our relatives, and I'll give you the locket."I asked, "What about Nick?"Nadine frowned. "Of course he's coming. He's done so much to help you. Stop giving him a hard time."I looked down at my phone. George had just sent me a message. "The Norwell project confirmation has been sent. Please sign."I sent my confirmation."I'll pick you up at 6:00 pm," Nadine said. "Keep quiet tonight, and don't bring up what happened yesterday."I was about to answer when her phone rang.

Third-Person POVNadine stood still in the living room for a long time. The closet was open, and not a single piece of Andy's clothing was left inside.Only one toothbrush remained by the sink. The wedding countdown had also been torn off the refrigerator, leaving only a small piece of clear tape behind.A cardboard box sat on the dining table. Nadine walked over to it.Inside the box were the ring she had given Andy and the bank card for their joint account. At the very top of everything sat a notebook. She recognized Andy's handwriting at once. He has written, "Mr. Grant doesn't have a sweet tooth. Remember to set the massager to the lowest setting beforehand."Mrs. Grant Senior just got out of the hospital. Don't bring up her health or age when you see her."The last line read, "Don't be too nervous, and don't make things difficult for Nadine."Nadine took out her phone and called Andy. She tried several times, but he didn't answer. She tightened her grip on her phone and

Third-Person POVNadine looked at Nick, her tone hardening. "Who told you to change the names?"Nick's smile didn't falter. "Andy isn't coming. We can't have all these guests make the trip for nothing. I'm just taking his place for the evening."He touched the locket on his chest. "Besides, you've always said the party is just a formality, right?"His words hit Nadine hard. The guests still had no idea what was going on.Patrick hurried over and spoke in a hushed tone, "Nadine, everyone's watching. Andy's the one throwing a fit and refusing to come. Do you really want the whole family to be embarrassed because of him?"Nadine spoke firmly, "This is my engagement party with Andy. If he's not here, we're canceling it."Patrick's expression darkened. "Don't be ridiculous! The hotel, the food, and the guests have all been arranged. If you cancel now, what are people going to think of us?"Nicky's already dressed for the occasion. Let him stand in for Andy tonight. If Andy comes ba

Chapter 7

Third-Person POV"Dad, you knew about this?" Nadine asked.Patrick avoided her gaze. "I didn't know Nick had prepared two decks. I just thought it wouldn't hurt to let him stand in for Andy during the introductions.""What do you mean by 'it wouldn't hurt'?" Nadine's voice came out strained. "Andy even memorized what he was supposed to say."Patrick's expression hardened with embarrassment. "This happened all because Andy refused to cooperate! If he had just gone along with the arrangements, none of this would've happened."Melinda slammed her cane against the floor. "You're still blaming Andy?"Patrick fell silent. As Melinda stared at the screen, she appeared livid."You kept telling me the young man who greeted me was Nadine's boyfriend," Melinda said. "But you had her real boyfriend locked outside."Did you really think you could make a fool of me?""Mom, I was only worried about your health," Patrick said."Don't use my health as an excuse!" Melinda snapped. She tore th

Chapter 8

Andy's POVWhen my flight landed, it was raining in Norwell. The moment I turned on my phone, dozens of missed calls appeared at once. They were all from Nadine. Her messages started with explanations, then slowly turned into pleas. In the end, her last message was just one sentence."I'm waiting for you at the airport. Please come back, okay?"I stared at it for a long time, but I never replied.Even now, she still thought all I wanted was another chance to meet her family and be welcomed into the Grant family home. But I no longer wanted to walk through that door.On my way to the office, I texted my lawyer. "Proceed as planned."Half an hour later, my lawyer, Mark Kent, sent Nadine the bill. The cost of renovating and furnishing the new house came to 50,000 dollars. The deposit for the engagement suit and the cost of repairing the damage was a total of 3,000 dollars. The bedding, tableware, and appliances Nick had taken out of their packaging and used without permission

Chapter 9

Andy's POVSix months later, the Norwell project officially wrapped up. The lease on my small apartment in the city was up too.My landlord asked if I wanted to renew, but I didn't.Instead, I bought a small place near the office. It wasn't big, but I had chosen it myself. After I signed the paperwork, the realtor handed me two keys. "Mr. Sharp, would you like to leave the spare key with a family member?"I shook my head. "I'll take both."Just then, the doorbell rang. I thought it was the building manager dropping off some paperwork I might have missed during the move.It was Nadine. She wasn't carrying flowers or a gift. There was only a brown paper bag in her hand. The smile faded from Bradley's face. "What is she doing here?"I didn't open the door.Nadine stood outside. As if she knew I could see her, she looked up at the security camera. "Andy, I won't come in. I just want to ask if you'll give me ten minutes."My phone buzzed at the same time. She had sent me an add
