Chapter 1

The docks were as lively as ever on the day of the Flowerboat Festival. Firecrackers crackled and popped along the waterfront. One after another, couples who had already agreed on secret signals chose their partners' boats and sailed away in high spirits. When it was my boyfriend Julian Lowe's turn, only about a dozen boats were left at the dock, each with a woman still waiting inside. The crowd began to cheer him on. "Julian, make sure you pick the right boat this time! Susan has been waiting for seven years, and she puts so much care into the boat each year. Surely fate will finally bring you two together!"Fate? If I hadn't overheard what Julian said the night before, I might have believed it.I stood inside the cabin, clutching my wedding fan. Its weight pressed against the tiny cuts on my hand, making them sting. In our town, a finely crafted Flowerboat Festival boat was seen as a sign of how sincerely a woman sought her destined marriage. So every year, I built a new boat

Chapter 2

Julian fell silent for a few seconds after hearing that.Mia's eyes immediately filled with tears. "Susan, even if you're upset that Julian picked me, you shouldn't say you're going to marry someone else just to spite him."She pressed her lips together, looking like she'd been terribly wronged. "Julian, if Susan's this upset, you should go be with her. It's just that, according to the festival rules, if no one chooses my boat, I'll have to stay here until dark before I can leave."Julian's expression darkened, disappointment filling his eyes. "Susan, when did you become such a liar? Do you really have to be jealous and petty at a time like this? If I leave Mia now and go with you, is she supposed to stay here alone all day?So, he knew how hard it was to spend the day alone on a boat.Yet every Flowerboat Festival, I'd done exactly that, waiting on my boat all day without a drop of water.I stared at him, my eyes stinging. There was a time when I hated Mia and her mom for takin

Chapter 3

The man was covered in mud and grime, looking as if he'd just crawled out of a dirt pit."There was an accident on the way, and my car skidded. My assistant's still taking care of things back there. I was worried you'd be waiting, so I came ahead," he said.I hesitated for a moment before hearing his steady voice again. "Your leg's bleeding. Let me get a car and take you to the hospital. Wait here for me."I looked down and finally noticed the long gash beneath my wedding gown. The skin around the wound was torn open, and the pain was only starting to register. My nose stung, and my vision blurred. The man hadn't gone far when my phone rang. As soon as I answered, Julian's furious voice tore into me. "Susan, how can you be so cruel? First you pushed Mia, and now you're spreading rumors that she's a homewrecker? Isn't it enough that she was forced to move back to the canal town?"His voice turned icy. "And now you let that crazy mother of yours come to the Clark residence to shove

Chapter 4

I ignored Julian's shocked expression and knelt in front of Mia. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have accused you of being a homewrecker."I bit down on my lower lip and looked at Julian wearily. "I apologized. Can you let us go now?"Mia looked startled and took a step back, though her phone remained aimed right at my face. "But Susan, your mom also called mine a homewrecker who stole her husband..."She trailed off.The sheer absurdity of it hit me hard. I stared at Julian's indifferent expression, my whole body shaking."Mia's mom admitted she was wrong a long time ago," Julian said coldly. "That was years ago. Does your mom really have to keep holding onto it?"At that moment, I finally understood. Any lingering attachment I had to Julian snapped completely.Julian parted his lips, trying to reason with me again. "Susan, if you've done something wrong, you have to apologize...""Fine." I turned blankly toward the camera and spoke each word slowly. "Mia's mom isn't a homewrecker..."

Chapter 5

Julian quickly strode over and stopped the old man. "What did you just say?"Mia stepped forward anxiously and reached for his arm. "Julian, we..."Julian yanked his arm back, making her stumble. The old man jumped, then glanced instinctively toward the doorway. "I'm talking about Susan Clark! The young woman who comes for the Flowerboat Festival every year. She finally stopped waiting for that out-of-town boyfriend of hers who keeps picking her sister instead!"Julian followed the old man's gaze outside.Out on a boat in the middle of the river, I was taking part in my wedding ceremony. Across the distance, our eyes met, but I simply looked away. Fireworks lit up the riverbank as I smiled warmly at the man beside me, who wore a matching wedding outfit. The old man didn't notice Julian's darkening expression. He was just happy to have someone to share the news with."You wouldn't know this, but Susan used to come here with her mom, Diana, when she was little. Her mom grew up aro

Chapter 6

Julian felt a strange mix of fond amusement and exasperation. "I guess Susan got tired of arguing with me every year and decided to try something new this time. She really is stubborn. No one but me could put up with her."He loved my stubbornness almost as much as it drove him crazy. I had never been the type to give in, no matter what. Even when I fell and got hurt, I would grit my teeth and deal with it myself. That was simply who I was. When I first met him in Portville, I saw him being bullied by older kids from a branch family and rushed to his defense like a heroine, sending them all running. Even with my own face bruised and swollen, I still went over to check on him. When Julian wiped the blood from my face and asked if it hurt, I blinked before grinning fiercely. "They got it worse!"Back then, he wondered how anyone could be so foolish. He didn't trust my kindness, either.Even after I'd found out that he was constantly being locked up and covered in bruises, I would

Chapter 7

Julian's eyes widened as he instinctively reached for my hand. But before he could reach me, my husband, Henry Reed, pulled me into his arms and confronted Julian in a low voice. "Mr. Lowe, this is my wife. What exactly do you think you're doing?"Pain flashed across Julian's face. "What are you talking about? Susan is my girlfriend…"Henry narrowed his eyes and scoffed. "For seven whole years, you never once chose Susan's boat. You always chose someone else's for the wedding ceremony. And now you claim she's your girlfriend? Have you ever looked at her hands? They're covered in scars from building those boats!"Henry paused, his voice cold. "Or perhaps you only have time for other women? You made sure Mia wouldn't tire herself out by having someone fix her boat, but you never bothered to care about your so-called girlfriend."I lowered my eyes. Strangely, I felt calm as I listened.Julian went pale. "I only did that because I love her. I was scared…"Henry's arm tightened aroun

Chapter 8

"Wait, Susan!" Julian shouted.Julian tried to follow me, but his dad's men stopped him.Henry respectfully bowed to the clan elder, and the two of us made our way into the chapel without a hitch.Inside the chapel, we both wrote our names in the old clan register."Henry Reed and Susan Clark. From this day forth, we will stay by each other's side and never part."When I finished writing the last word, I breathed a sigh of relief and looked at Henry gratefully. "Thank you for everything today. If it weren't for you, my mom could have died."A warm, rueful smile crossed Henry's face. "You seem to thank me every time we meet.""Isn't this our first time meeting?" I asked, blinking in surprise."Don't you remember?" Henry replied. "You once rescued a stray cat and couldn't afford a cab. I had my driver give you a ride."I studied his face closely before it finally clicked. He was the kind stranger I'd met when I first arrived at Portville. Back then, he seemed much more distant
