Chapter 1

The air turned deathly silent. The sound of a ringing phone cut through the air. I couldn't help but feel as if I was being mocked when I saw my husband's mistress Layla McKinley's name flashing on the screen. My best friend Diana Nicholson's expression turned soft when she answered the call, saying, "Okay. I'll be there as soon as possible."Her tender expression morphed into a calm one again after she hung up."I know that you don't actually want to get a divorce," she said. "You wouldn't have let me convince you to change your mind time and time again if you were being serious. Go home. Apologize to Jason properly and swear that you won't harass Layla again. We can sweep everything under the rug if you do."She snatched up her keys after she was done speaking and hurried out of the courthouse.Howling winds blew past the window. It began storming heavily a few seconds later.I clutched the divorce agreement, thinking about how it had also been a rainy day when I caught my hus

Chapter 2

The estate was heavily guarded as if they were trying to keep someone out.I tightened my grip on the divorce agreement and cleared my throat. "I'm looking for Jason Simmons. I'm his wife, Sienna Irving."The security guards exchanged glances before scoffing. "What nonsense are you spouting? Everyone knows that Mr. Simmons' wife is Layla McKinley, the one who stays in this estate."They gave me a once-over before continuing, "Who's going to believe the words of a country bumpkin like you?"I pursed my lips and remained rooted to the spot in front of the door, refusing to leave.A few moments later, someone who looked like the housekeeper came out of the estate and whispered to the security guards. The security guards brandished their batons and shouted, "Get out of here! Mr. Simmons said that he doesn't know anyone named Sienna Irving. Get out of our sight right now!"They shoved me to the ground after they were done speaking and swung their batons at me."What do you think you

Chapter 3

I was completely frozen in place. I looked between Diana and Jason.Mom remarried when I was in high school. However, she was exposed for being somebody's mistress. Only later did we learn that the man already had a wife and daughter and had been unfaithful to his wife. But no matter how Mom tried to explain herself, everyone believed that she was a homewrecker. When the man's ex-wife showed up on our doorstep, she forced Mom to jump off the building. Meanwhile, the man vanished into thin air out of fear that he would be punished for being responsible for the tragedy.Eventually, rumors of me being a mistress' daughter spread like wildfire throughout the school. My desk was always filled with trash, and red crosses were scribbled all over my test papers.I was also criticized wherever I went. People would say things like, "A mistress' daughter will definitely grow up to be a mistress too!"At one point, my depression got so severe that I had to drop out of school.Diana was the

Jason stiffened before he lowered his head and stared at me in disbelief. "How much longer are you going to cause a fuss, Sienna?" he demanded. He was right. He believed that I was just causing a fuss every time I asked for a divorce. Every time I tried to jump from a building or slit my wrists, he thought that I was just trying to cause a scene. After all, I would always let Diana convince me to change my mind and obediently reconcile with him in the end.I was the only one who knew that things were different this time.I crawled back up to my feet after the bodyguards released me."I don't want any jewelry, cars, or houses this time," I said. "I just want a divorce."Jason's arm, which was wrapped around Layla, went rigid for a split second. "I won't agree to a divorce. What are you scheming this time? Are you trying to play hard to get?"Layla had also stopped crying. "You promised me that you would give me a family, Jason," she said.Jason fell silent for a few moments b

Both Diana and Jason had sent me messages.I tapped on Diana's messages first."Where did you go, Sienna?" she asked. "Why can't I find you anywhere?""I've already gotten to the bottom of what happened. I'm the one who misunderstood you. Please come back, okay?"I didn't reply and tapped on Jason's messages instead."You've truly disappointed me, Sienna.""You actually tampered with the divorce agreement for the sake of an outsider.""I'm willing to let bygones be bygones as long as you obediently come back and apologize."I removed my SIM card from my phone.Diana and Jason had no idea that I was never going to go back ever again.I left the airport after the plane landed. I assumed that Hunter Finch's bodyguard would pick me up, but when I approached the car and pulled the door open, I came face-to-face with a tall and intimidating man sitting in the backseat."You—"Hunter seemed to guess what I was thinking before I could even finish my sentence. He interrupted me an

Chapter 6

The apartment Hunter had arranged for me was very spacious. I began exploring the place after setting down my suitcase. There was a river beyond the window. The view was vast and open. Most importantly, I loved the design of the apartment. It almost felt as if it had been specially renovated according to my preferences. After putting my things away, I crawled into bed and let myself succumb to sleep.…I woke up bright and early the next morning. I prepared to head downstairs to explore the area, but I was completely caught off guard when I realized that the housekeeper had already prepared breakfast and was waiting for me in the kitchen."You're awake, Ms. Irving," she said. "Mr. Finch specifically asked me to prepare breakfast for you."I looked at the spread of food on the dining table. The dishes were all my favorites, and the portions were just right, not too much and not too little. An inexplicable feeling welled up in my heart. A man I barely knew was able to remember my

Chapter 7

We drove all the way to the hospital Hunter was currently in. After getting out of the car, I followed the bodyguards to Hunter's ward.I thought that I would see a bedridden Hunter. Instead, I came face-to-face with Jason, who was quietly waiting for me. He was fiddling with a small knife as he sat on the bed.I frowned and took a few steps backward. "What are you doing here?" I asked.Jason scoffed and stabbed the knife into the fruit next to him. "What's wrong? Are you disappointed that it's me?" he asked, slowly rising to his feet and walking toward me. "Come home with me, Sienna," he said, looking down his nose at me."We're already divorced," I retorted, looking up at him.Jason grabbed my hand in a death grip. "Where do you think you can escape to without my permission?""Let go of me!" I exclaimed, shooting a cold look at him. "I'm going to scream if you don't!"He barked out a mocking laugh. "Go ahead! I've already paid off everyone in this hospital. Let's see if anyo

Jason immediately let go of me, staring at me in disbelief. "You actually called the police?" he demanded.I adjusted my wrinkled sleeve and took a step backward. "How would I have gotten evidence of you personally hurting Hunter if I didn't?""Sienna Irving!" Jason roared, staring at me with wide eyes. The police officer tightened his grip on his gun. "Don't move."Jason raised both hands in the air in surrender. He was then hauled away by the police. Right before he got into the police car, he shot a long look at me."Do you really believe that you can take me down this way?" he asked. "You're too naive, Sienna. I can turn the tables any time as long as there's no conclusive evidence."I didn't respond and simply watched as Jason slipped into the car and was taken away.I wasn't sure how much time had passed, but my legs were already numb when I finally turned around and saw Diana standing behind me. I had no idea how long she had been standing there, but seeing that I'd notic

Chapter 9

It seemed that Hunter had touched a sore spot within Diana. She whipped her head up and stared at him, exclaiming, "What nonsense are you spouting? Why would I fall for Jason? I just wanted to help Sienna when I saw her in pain."Hunter stared into her eyes. "Then, can you explain why you pinned the blame on Sienna when you were the one who caused Layla's miscarriage?""What the hell are you talking about?" Diana roared, stomping her feet. She whirled around, looking like she was going to leave. "I… I did no such thing."She then pointed at Hunter, shouting, "I understand what's going on now! You're trying to drive a wedge between me and Sienna!"Hunter chuckled. "Do I still need to do that?"I stepped forward and stood before Diana.Diana bit her lip and shook her head. She looked at me and said, "Please let me explain, Sienna."My face was devoid of emotion as I slapped her hard across the face. "You owe me this slap, Diana. I'm willing to let bygones be bygones as long as yo
