Chapter 1

Seven days after our son, Theodore Jenkins, passed away, I ran into my wife, Jocelyn Seacross, at the mall. She was carrying armfuls of shopping bags, and when she looked at her childhood sweetheart, Levi Anderson, tenderness practically radiated from her eyes. But the moment she saw me, her brow furrowed. She eyed me with open wariness, her icy gaze cutting straight through me. "What are you doing here? Didn't we agree to get divorced? Don't tell me you've changed your mind?"Levi shot her a glance, then smiled apologetically at me. "Eleazar, please don't get the wrong idea. Josie is just really eager to marry me."As he spoke, he glanced subtly behind me, a smug smile forming on his lips. "Our wedding is set for a week from now. You're more than welcome to come. Oh, and bring the baby along!"I instinctively clenched my fists. But before I could say anything, Jocelyn cut in. "How could he possibly make it? He has to take care of the baby! Besides, Teddy's still so young—what

I lay on the hospital bed, waiting from dusk until dawn, only to receive a single message from Jocelyn. "Stop calling me so much. The ringing is annoying."I stared at the message on my phone and bit down hard on my lip until it bled.Jocelyn Seacross, from now on, we would have nothing to do with each other. I wished her happiness.…The memory ended there abruptly. Jocelyn gave me a light shove, reminding me flatly, "Remember to show up for the divorce tomorrow. And don't pretend you're not feeling well again."I froze for a moment, then remembered what she was referring to. Three days after the accident, Jocelyn had called me from outside the courthouse. It was the only call she made to me after Theodore died.At the time, I had just finished a night of IV drips and was in terrible condition. When I answered, I accidentally hit the wrong button and put it on speaker. Jocelyn's impatient voice instantly rang out through the entire hospital room."Eleazar Jenkins, do you th

By the time I got home, it was already late at night. I got into the house and pulled a drawer open, only to find a dusty cigarette pack inside.Ever since Theodore was born, I had forced myself to quit smoking, worried it would affect his health.I dared not smoke around him and could only swallow the craving every time I saw it in the past. But now that I could smoke again, the sight of it only brought tears to my eyes.I went to the kitchen and made myself some scrambled eggs. Just as I was about to dig in, the sound of a key turning came from the entryway.Jocelyn walked in carrying a suitcase.I found it strange, as she hadn't come home in a long time since Levi got sick. "Why are you back? Don't you need to be with Levi?" I asked.Jocelyn dragged the suitcase straight into the bedroom and said casually, "Since I'm marrying Levi, I came back to pick up my things. Saves me the trouble later."I hummed in acknowledgment, but my mind drifted back to Levi's words."Our weddi

Leaning against the door, I could hear Jocelyn's rapid breathing. She didn't leave, and I didn't move either. Our bodies were separated only by a door less than four inches thick, but our hearts were a world apart. The next second, Jocelyn took out her key and opened the door. She didn't step inside, but just looked at me for a long moment. Then, she pulled a small, palm-sized rattle from her pocket and handed it to me."I saw this at the mall today. I thought Teddy would like it."That one sentence completely shattered all the composure I had barely managed to hold together.I took the rattle, immediately shut the door and locked it, then collapsed onto the floor and sobbed silently. I didn't understand why people always only treasured love after they had already lost it.The rattle fell to the floor, letting out a clear, tinkling sound.I sat there on the floor, motionless through the entire night. The next morning, I set out on time. Just as I got into the car, I received a

The words on the death certificate spoke silently of everything.Jocelyn couldn't help but feel as if those horrifying words had pierced into her eyes. For a moment, she was so stunned that she stumbled backward several steps. Then, ignoring the contemptuous stares of passersby, she let out a piercing shriek.Though the truth was already set in stone, she staggered, then turned to look at me with utter disbelief. "This is absurd! We've already had things planned out! How could you curse our child like this?"I didn't respond, dismissing her ridiculous and pathetic display with complete disdain. She ignored the fact that I was still weak and continued raging. "Eleazar Jenkins, how could you do something so cruel?"At that point, all I could do was let out a scornful laugh, unsure how to deal with her. "It's been 100 times. Even the most seamless lie gets exposed eventually, doesn't it?"Jocelyn would rather twist my intentions with malice than accept what was right in front of h

Chapter 6

The smell of disinfectant filled the hospital. In a place where life and death played out at every moment of every day, it seemed easier to let go of everything.Jocelyn, mindful of Levi's grave illness, naturally felt a measure of pity for him.Levi felt something slipping away. Though darkness filled his vision, he was certain something was gradually fading away from him.He opened his eyes, and the yellowed ceiling stared back at him in silence. "Josie!"Fortunately, Jocelyn hadn't abandoned him and reached out to hold his hand. Everything he had schemed for all along now left him feeling bewildered instead. With tears in his eyes, he asked, "Josie, if it weren't for you, would I have been left abandoned on the street?"He tightened his grip on Jocelyn's hand. "I'm so scared! I'm scared that you'll be gone when I wake up, and I'll have to bear this suffering all alone."Levi's pleas became muffled in Jocelyn's ears. "Don't leave me…"He paused for a moment, his voice somewha

Memories from the past came flooding back into Jocelyn's mind.Back then, it had been spring, and the air was full of drifting willow catkins. It triggered my allergies and caused me to cough severely, but still I refused to go to the hospital because I had to take care of Theodore. When it finally got too unbearable for me, I called Jocelyn and asked her to come back to look after Theodore for a while. Instead, she chose to go see Levi for what she called "one last time".Another time, in winter, frost framed the windows. I held Theodore and watched the plane tree leaves fall one by one outside the window. I said I would use those fallen leaves to make an artwork as a gift for Theodore's first birthday. Now, Theodore would never have the chance to receive that gift.Every memory was vivid. She knew exactly how much I'd suffered, yet only now did she think of them.Levi's phone calls kept coming, one after another, fraying Jocelyn's nerves even further. When she finally picked up

Jocelyn could no longer hold back. She pushed open the hospital room door and said, "There's no need to contact anyone."Her voice struck Levi like a bolt of lightning."Josie? Why are you here?" he asked.Jocelyn's eyes widened in astonishment. "Didn't you say you had a terminal illness? Dr. Murphy, what's going on?"Cassidy looked sternly at Jocelyn. "This is your fiance? I'm not entirely clear on the details, but he's perfectly healthy."As she turned to leave, Cassidy added with lingering displeasure, "Please complete the discharge procedures as soon as possible. Don't hinder other patients from getting the treatment they need."Jocelyn's eyes snapped open in disbelief, and she said with a frown, "Levi, you'd better have a good explanation for this!"Levi stammered, "She… she must be a quack! I'm sure there's been a mistake. This is a misdiagnosis!"Jocelyn grabbed his wrist without another word. "Fine. Then we'll go to another hospital. I'm bringing you for a check-up righ

Chapter 9

But what had become of Theodore now? Because of his mother's neglect, he was gone forever. In the past, Jocelyn had ignored all my phone calls, so perhaps this was Theodore's punishment for her.Jocelyn sank onto the edge of the bed, unable to calm herself for a long time. I had already severed all ties with her, and Levi wasn't exactly a good person, so she pretty much deserved what she got.Levi's cutting words before he left now really sounded like retribution. Yet with his already miserable life, he was likely just paying in advance for the evil deeds he would later commit. He had used a terminal illness to deceive Jocelyn time and time again, and yet she still chose to believe him. Sure, a terminal illness might cloud a person's judgment, but that didn't mean that Theodore's and my suffering were worth nothing. I never believed either of them was innocent. The arguments and quarrels of the past refused to leave Jocelyn's mind, and waves of silent wails seemed to echo throug

Chapter 10

The polite interaction we had was far more painful to Jocelyn than any cold words or mockery could have been—because it only meant that I had truly let it all go, and that I had no more lingering feelings for her. She was no longer worth my sadness or my agitation.Jocelyn left dejectedly. I had personally closed the door that separated her from me.She boarded the return flight alone and returned once more to that cold, icy house, where several wilted bouquets still lay by the doorstep. Before Jocelyn could even open the door, the shrill ring of her phone cut through the silence again. Levi's voice on the other end was particularly sharp. "Jocelyn, don't make things harder than they need to be. My patience has limits. Don't you think for a second that you can just ditch me! If you still won't let go of Eleazar, then you can spend the rest of your life living in his shadow!"Jocelyn hung up in annoyance, but Levi clung to her like a vengeful ghost. Before long, he was knocking
