Chapter 1

After the wedding, Dante handed the Family ledgers and control of the emergency vault to Valentina, his lover.Every expense—from arms purchases to medical bills for Family members—had to go through her. Even I, the Donna, needed Valentina's approval. Then Beatrice, Dante's mother and the former Donna, was ambushed outside a church.Dante was locked in a closed-door meeting with the Five Families. So I went to the office and asked Valentina to release the emergency funds. She sat there painting her nails."You need money? Fine. Submit a request."Valentina never missed a chance to use the authority Dante had given her to humiliate someone. But Beatrice was still waiting for surgery. I had no time to argue, so I quickly wrote down the amount, the reason for the withdrawal, and the payment deadline.Valentina rejected the request without even glancing at it."That's it?" she asked. "You're asking for half a million dollars, not fifty bucks. Denied.""Her aorta is still bleeding. The clin

At last, the money seemed within reach. Then, without warning, Valentina hung up the secure phone, grabbed the request, and ripped it in half. The torn pieces fluttered to the floor, and the entire office went silent.I stared at them, stunned."What are you doing?""Saving you time." She waved one half of the page at me. "The address is off by one letter. If you can't even get the clinic's address right, why should I give you the money?"I argued, "Fixing it would take seconds. But Beatrice is running out of time."Valentina tore the remaining half into pieces. "If you can't even fill out a simple form, that woman's life clearly can't mean that much to you. For all I know, you're just trying to scam Dante out of half a million dollars."I guess a woman who spends all day living off her husband will do anything for a little extra cash."Anger burned through me, but I forced myself to keep it under control."If it had been your wife's mother on that operating table, would you really was

I hurried over to Dante. "Mom is in the clinic. She's bleeding internally, and they need five hundred thousand dollars before they'll operate."Beatrice once said that I could call her "Mom" if I wanted to. She truly treated me like her own daughter, and I grew accustomed to calling her "Mom."I pointed at the shredded paper on the floor. "I've been here for two hours. I've filled out three requests, but Valentina still refuses to release the money. We have less than thirty minutes left. Dante, tell her to open the vault. We need to get to the clinic now."Valentina immediately moved to his side and rested her fingers lightly on his arm. Her eyes were already red, as if she were the one who had been wronged."Don, you're finally back. I didn't know what to do."The Donna barged in. She demanded money without following any of the procedures you put in place. She even interfered when I tried to discipline a trainee for overstepping. I did nothing but follow your rules, yet she blamed me

My phone kept buzzing in my palm.Messages from the clinic kept coming."Patient is still bleeding internally. If payment is not confirmed within ten minutes, the operating room will be reassigned to the next patient.""Vital signs are deteriorating. Payment must be authorized immediately."Each message felt like another second ticking away.I remembered my first Sunday dinner at the Moretti house. No one wanted to sit beside me. Beatrice was the one who pulled out the chair next to her and told me to sit down. Later, when I was injured and running a fever, she brought hot soup to my room every day because I could barely eat. When Dante removed me from the council, Beatrice reminded me that he could take away my seal, but he could never take away my judgment. She was the only person in the Family who had ever treated me like one of their own, not just the woman Dante had married. Now she was lying on an operating table, running out of time while her son stood by and did nothing. The th

Dante listened to the doctor without a trace of grief. He simply rubbed his brow, looking annoyed."If she's dead, handle it according to protocol. Have the mortician from St. Mary's collect the body, have a priest perform the last rites, then send her for cremation."He dropped the phone back onto the desk as if he'd just finished an ordinary business call. "If there are any other questions, talk to my wife. Don't call this number again."I stood there, cold to the bone. I couldn't stay there another second.I had just reached the elevator when he called after me. "Wait. Where do you think you're going? Didn't you hear what the doctor said?"I stopped but didn't turn around.Dante caught up, speaking to me in the same commanding tone he used with his men. "Go deal with your mother's funeral, then come back to the manor and keep Mom company. Don't burden her with any of this."A bitter laugh almost escaped me.I turned around slowly and looked him in the eye."The woman who died wasn't

Outside St. Mary's Church, Dante stood in the rain, clutching his mother's black urn, looking like a man who had lost everything. His bodyguard hurried over and lowered his voice. "Don Dante, the old Don ended his meeting in Sicily early. He's already on the plane back to New York, but he hasn't been able to reach the former Donna."Dante’s head jerked up. For the first time, real fear appeared in his bloodshot eyes.Salvatore and Beatrice had been married for more than forty years. He had always taken care of her in every little way, even checking that her water was the right temperature before handing it to her.Dante had inherited the title, but Salvatore had built the empire from the ground up—the territory, the docks, and the loyalty of its capos. Even after stepping down, the old Don's word carried more weight than Dante's.If his father found out that Beatrice had missed her chance at surgery while Dante stood by and let Valentina humiliate me, Dante knew he was finished.Dante

Dante flinched. Then he crawled forward and clutched his father's trouser leg. "Please, Father. I know I was wrong. Give me one more chance."Salvatore looked down at him, his eyes red with grief."Your whole life, your mother gave you everything you wanted. Suits, sports cars, territory of your own, men of your own. All you had to do was ask, and she found a way to give it to you."Did you think being a Moretti meant all of this belonged to you?"Salvatore pressed a hand to his chest, and his voice began to tremble."Before the Family even had a proper office, Beatrice slept beside me in a storage room above a butcher shop. She hid our ledgers inside her coat and carried them through police checkpoints. When I was shot, she was the one who got me home alive."I swore before God that as long as I lived, she would never go hungry and would never have to face death alone."He paused, struggling to steady his voice. "But you let her die alone on an operating table. When it was over, it wa

Three days after the funeral, Dante showed up at the apartment complex where I was staying. When I returned, I found him sitting on the front steps. He was alone, without a driver or a single bodyguard. His hair was unkempt, several days of stubble covered his jaw, and he'd lost so much weight that I barely recognized him.The moment he saw me, he scrambled to his feet. "Please. Give me five minutes."I didn't stop. I headed straight for the entrance."I know I have no right to ask you for anything, but I truly have nowhere else to go." He hurried after me. "Dad froze all my accounts. I'm no longer Don. I lost my ring, my men, everything. Even the safe houses won't let me in."Mom is dead. My dad doesn't want me anymore. And now I'm losing you too. I have nothing left."I stopped and turned to look at him. Once, a single word from Dante could make half the New York underworld move. Now he stood before me with nothing, hoping his misery would somehow make me forgive him."That's not my

When I reached my childhood home in Chicago, pulling my suitcase up the driveway, my mother was in the yard pruning her roses. At the sound of my suitcase rolling up the driveway, she turned around, pruning shears still in hand. "Sweetheart? What are you doing here?"I smiled and told her I missed her and wanted to stay for a while. She stared at me for a moment before hurrying over. Her eyes lingered on my face, thinner than the last time she'd seen me, but she didn't ask any questions. She simply took my suitcase and led me inside."You must be starving. I'll make you something to eat."That night, I told her everything. When I finished, she fell silent for a long time. "When Dante was courting you, he acted like there was nothing in the world he wouldn't do for you. I thought once you married him, I wouldn't have to worry about you anymore."She shook her head, her eyes filling with tears. "I never imagined he'd become someone like that."She took my hand. "Beatrice was a good woman
