Chapter 1

My mind was made up. I was about to leave when I heard my mother Diane's voice."Olivia, don't go thinking we're setting Jenny up. I'm her mother; I would never hurt her. It's just that you're far more capable than she is. She doesn't deserve a position that high."At her words, a stab of pain went through my chest.I had already known, but hearing it from my own mother's mouth was still impossible to swallow.Through the glass I could see Diane eagerly brewing coffee, carrying over plate after plate of desserts."Olivia, these are the finest coffee beans Jamaica has to offer. I remember they're your favorite. And black truffle chocolate to go with them."The words sounded utterly foreign to me, because she had never once said them to me.She never even asked whether I'd had dinner, yet she remembered someone else's tastes down to the last detail. My beloved younger brother, Adam Carter, was giving Allen a thumbs-up."Now that's a man fit to lead the pack. Allen, the way you treat Oliv

Then, ignoring my struggles, she pulled me straight into the living room. The moment everyone saw me, the smiles vanished from their faces. She handed me a slice of cake, still smiling away."I thought you were still holding a grudge after you lost Employee of the Year and hit me. Looks like I was overthinking it.""Since you're here, that means you've forgiven me. How about dinner tonight to celebrate properly?"If I hadn't known she was the one who'd quietly turned the entire staff against me, that fake smile might actually have fooled me.But before I could say a word, a cup of scalding coffee was flung in my face."Jenny! You are completely out of control. Now you have the nerve to hit people?!"Diane was the one who had thrown it."When the debt collectors showed up at my door and I asked you for money, you refused. Olivia drove them off and even gave me money. Did you know that? And now you repay her by attacking the woman who saved me!" Her mouth opened and closed, spilling accu

I held a hand to my cheek and stared straight at Diane. From the moment I'd walked in, she had defended someone else, thrown coffee in my face for someone else, hit me for someone else.I knew she didn't love me, but never before had she hurt me again and again for someone else's sake.Five years ago, when Allen and I were bound as mates before the Moon Goddess, Diane had wept at the sight of the moonstone ring that symbolized our love. But now everything had changed."What are you looking at me for?" she asked uneasily, then sat down and avoided my eyes."Nothing." A strange calm settled over me.That was what it felt like when all hope was gone.Slowly, I slid the moonstone ring off my finger, held Allen's gaze, and set the ring down on the table. The blue stone threw off a dazzling light that fell across Allen's face."Allen, there's no need for any ceremony. I, Jenny Carter, swear before the Moon Goddess: Allen Blackwood is no longer my fated mate. From this moment on, we are nothi

Back home, Allen had rushed Olivia to the hospital the moment he learned she'd fainted on the road, and he had been keeping watch at her bedside ever since.Only after she fell asleep did Allen finally remember Jenny. When Jenny removed the ring that symbolized their lifelong bond, his heart had seized with a flash of pain.It was the normal reaction to a mate leaving, but he didn't like the feeling, and he didn't want to let Jenny walk away like that.So the moment she stepped out the door, he had almost gone after her. It was Olivia who stopped him."Allen, Jenny's angry with me. She doesn't really want to leave you. Let me talk to her, and this will all blow over."Allen frowned. "But you're not well. What if she hits you again? Olivia, if anything happened to you, I would never forgive myself. When the wolves of another pack had me surrounded, you risked your life to save me. I owe everything I've become to that."But Olivia refused. "Don't worry, Allen. Jenny isn't that kind of pe

Chapter 5

After leaving the Starlight Pack, I flew to Paris, a foreign city where no one knew me.Walking down the Champs-Elysees and taking in the city's energy and charm, I felt the gloom in my heart begin to lift.I threw myself into work, my days a blur of reports and client meetings. Time flew, and there was no room left to dwell on the things that hurt.Only in the dead of night did I still jolt awake.I dreamed of that gleaming silver dagger cutting slowly into an artery, black poison spreading through my whole body.I dreamed of life after my banishment, when I was a homeless lone wolf and people pointed and whispered wherever I went.No matter how I explained, no one believed I was innocent. Everyone cursed and mocked me with the vilest words they knew. The words were unbearable. Even with my hands pressed over my ears, they echoed in my head until I felt there was no place left for me anywhere.Having moved to a new city, I had switched to a local number and left my old SIM card sittin

Mr. Lambert's words cleared my head, and my resolve hardened: I would settle this with Allen face to face. When I returned to that familiar city, the people Mr. Lambert arranged came with me, and together we secured evidence damning enough to bury Olivia for good.Back at the pack mansion, Allen all but ran out to meet me."Jenny, you're finally back!"I glanced at Olivia behind him, and Allen's face flushed scarlet in an instant."Jenny, it's complicated. Olivia and I are mates in name only. She has been sleeping in the guest room. Nothing has happened between us."The truth was, if he had come to me at the very start and asked me to give up the promotion, I had loved him enough that I probably would have agreed. But he didn't. He chose to destroy my reputation instead, even if it cost me my life. Before I could speak, Olivia cut in from behind him."Jenny, Allen and I were bound before the Moon Goddess. Coming back won't change anything. Or have you still not changed your filthy ways

Chapter 7

Diane and Adam had appeared out of nowhere. Apparently they had heard every word."You spun me in circles and turned me against Jenny. I'll beat you to death!"I knew exactly what Diane was capable of in a fight. She straddled Olivia, not caring whether Olivia was conscious, and rained slaps and fists down on her.Adam dropped his gaze and apologized. "Jenny, she had me fooled. I thought she was the one who saved me. I'm sorry. I was wrong."Only when Adam finished did Diane stop swinging. She came toward me in tears, reaching for my hand.I stepped out of reach and looked her in the eye. "I still didn't have a wolf at eighteen. You did that, didn't you?""Wh-what do you mean, I did it? I don't know what you're talking about." Diane couldn't meet my eyes. Panic twisted her expression as her gaze darted everywhere."You wanted to suppress my bloodline, so you poisoned me from the time I was a child. You wanted me insecure forever so you could always control me. Well, I'm afraid you're a
