Chapter 1

"Elena, what are you staring at?" One of the Bellinis nudged me. The silver ring slipped from my hand and fell between the dock planks.I didn't pick it up. "The sun's too bright," I said.Luca had already boarded the ship with Sophia. She leaned against him as people onshore called out, asking about the wedding. Luca raised his glass. "Three days from now, at the Bellini estate. You're all invited."I stood at the back of the crowd and watched the ship sail toward the outer harbor. My mother texted back almost immediately. "Are you sure? The Riccis reached out a long time ago. They can send someone tonight if you're ready.""The sooner, the better," I replied and left.Whispers followed me. Someone said I'd waited seven years for a ring, only for Sophia to come back. An outsider like me should know when to step aside. Others pointed out that I wasn't a Bellini and had never had a seat on the council. No matter how much work I did for Luca, I was still just useful to him.I was walking

The next morning, I had just put the last box by the door when Luca returned with Sophia. She was still in yesterday's white dress, holding two cups of coffee like she already lived there.Luca's face darkened when he saw the luggage. "You're leaving?""Yes." I set the keys and the spare safe key on the counter. "This house is yours again. The books and hotel contacts are in the study. Every dollar is accounted for. I also left instructions for the handover."He grabbed my suitcase and frowned. "Everything was fine yesterday. Why are you suddenly throwing a fit? We have three hotels, two warehouses, and a shipment coming in tonight. Who's going to handle everything if you leave?"I looked at him; the warmth inside me finally went cold. Even now, he was worried about his business, not me."You're the head of the South Docks. It's your responsibility." I pushed his hand aside. "I've handled it for you for seven years. That's long enough."Sophia linked her arm with his. "Let her go. I ca

Early the next morning, Nina Moretti, the hotel manager, called to ask where I'd put last month's purchase invoices. I told her to ask Luca. There was a long silence before she said, "But Mr. Bellini said you always handled this.""Not anymore."I'd always kept separate books for the three hotels, warehouses, and underground gambling ring so the police couldn't trace everything at once. They were linked through an index system only Luca and I knew. I'd left the index, passwords, and instructions in the study. If Luca took the time to learn the system, he'd figure it out. But he was used to giving me a number and waiting for an answer. He couldn't even be bothered to check his own files.Luca called three times. I didn't answer. Then he sent a voice message, using the same tone he always did when he expected me to clean up his mess. "Enough games. The South Docks can't function without you."My mother set breakfast in front of me. "Still thinking about that bastard?""No." I turned off

Two days later, Sophia called from a new number and asked why I'd blocked Luca."The hotels are falling apart. He hasn't slept in days. You've been with him all these years. Are you really going to watch him lose everything?""And how is that my problem?""Don't you know how things work?" she scoffed. "You two were never married. There was no wedding ceremony. Luca was free to choose whoever he wanted. You never had a title, so you should know when to step aside. But you can't just walk away from all the work."My hand trembled as I held the phone. Not from guilt, but from disbelief. Sophia wanted my place, my house, and Luca, yet she still expected me to keep everything running for them."You're right, Sophia. I had no title." I spoke slowly. "So the Bellini books, the cargo, and whether the whole operation survives or falls apart are no longer my problem. Don't call again."I hung up and blocked her number too. That afternoon, Matteo took me to an old cinema in North Bay. After the m

A week later, Nina came to my house again. After Sophia took over the hotels, she fired two veteran accountants who refused to take orders from her. She even used the emergency fund to redecorate the penthouse. She knew nothing about shipping, yet she approved a shipment that hadn't been cleared by the Family. Word leaked, and the convoy was ambushed at South Bridge. A guard was shot, and the entire route had to be closed.Liquor distributors and food suppliers, afraid of being dragged into a Family conflict, stopped deliveries one after another. The private gambling operation couldn't pay out winnings on time, and clients crowded into the hotel demanding their money. Worse, the Old Don ordered an audit, and Luca couldn't explain several entries in the shadow ledgers.Books could be handed over. Relationships couldn't. Suppliers had given us credit for years because they trusted me to pay on time. Captains changed routes for us at a moment's notice because I never made them take the bl

Three days later, Nina came again. She said Luca had collapsed during the Family council meeting and was rushed to the private clinic. Days without sleep and a bleeding ulcer had left him bedridden. The council had already appointed an adviser to handle the South Docks' finances."Ms. Costa says she can't stand the sight of blood or the smell of the clinic. When Mr. Bellini woke up, he kept calling your name." Nina pleaded with me. "Please, just go see him once."I was quiet for a moment, then shook my head. "I'm not the one who should be by his side. If he needs someone to take care of him, hire a nurse. If the hotels can't survive, the council can decide what to do with them."Nina gave me a disappointed look. "Can you really be that heartless?"I didn't explain. After I closed the door, I slid down against it and sat on the floor. I wasn't as calm as I'd pretended. But being hurt didn't mean I had to go back. Seven years of habit wasn't the same as love. That evening, Matteo took me

A week later, the Bellini Family council made its decision. Luca lost control of the South Docks warehouses and shipping routes, and the Family's lawyers would liquidate the three hotels. The police also seized the hotels over tax and licensing violations, shutting down all legal operations. Compensation for the wounded guard, unpaid supplier bills, and losses from the gambling operation would all come out of Luca's share. The Bellini Family wasn't going to clean up everything for him. Their lawyers only handled matters that could affect the rest of the Family. Luca had to bear the remaining fines and debts himself. The South Bridge ambush was traced back to the unauthorized shipment he'd accepted. The rival crew handed over the gunmen, and both sides accepted the mediation. The wounded were compensated, and the disputed route was closed. No one was shot in the street. No bodies ended up in the harbor. Violence in Gray Harbor always had a price. Luca paid for it with his power.Sophia

A month later, my mother mentioned that Luca had left the clinic. He'd lost his territory and was deep in debt. He now lived in a cramped apartment in the South District and worked as a junior bookkeeper for the old adviser. He'd lost so much weight he was barely recognizable, and gray streaked his temples.I was trimming roses in the yard and paused for only a second. "I've cried enough over him."That evening, Matteo took me to meet his parents. The Ricci estate wasn't as heavily guarded as I'd imagined. There were only a few guards outside, and no one questioned me about my past over dinner. Before the meal, Matteo gave his gun to the guard at the door. It was a Ricci rule: people could disagree at the dinner table, but no weapons were allowed. Mr. Ricci talked to me about the shipyard. Mrs. Ricci asked what kind of flowers I liked. Everything felt so normal that for a moment, I forgot why there were security vehicles outside.Mr. Ricci asked if I wanted to continue handling the shi

News of Elena's engagement soon spread across Gray Harbor.Luca sat in his cramped apartment, staring at a photo someone had sent him. Matteo and Elena stood in front of a new ship at the Ricci shipyard, his hand resting on her shoulder. They both looked relaxed and happy.Over the past month, Luca had been sorting through what was left of the South Docks accounts. Only then did he realize how much Elena had done. She had kept the legitimate income separate from the Family's cut and left notes on every supplier, every shipping route, and even the problems employees faced at home. Every detail he'd once ignored now weighed on him.Without Elena, Sophia hadn't lasted a week. The moment Luca lost his territory, she left. Only then did he see the truth. Sophia had wanted the South Docks boss, not him. Elena was the only person who had stayed beside him from the days when he was still collecting protection money at the fish market. The night Sophia left, she threw the engagement ring on the

The engagement banquet was held in a seaside hall at the Ricci shipyard. Every Family in Gray Harbor was invited, along with lawyers, captains, and old friends. Matteo didn't use a ship or a ring to keep me guessing. Before the banquet began, he gave me the signed prenuptial agreement and the documents for my shares in the shipyard. The invitation listed my name and title, and my place card stood on its own instead of identifying me through Matteo. When I entered the hall, people raised their glasses to me—not because I was the woman someone had chosen, but because my position and responsibilities were now recognized by everyone there."This is the place you deserve, not a favor I'm granting you," he said. Then, in front of everyone, he got down on one knee and held out a ring. "Elena Rossi, I love you. Will you marry me?"I looked into his eyes and nodded. "I will."Applause filled the hall. Mr. Ricci announced that anyone who crossed me from that day on would answer to the Ricci Fami
