Chapter 1

My coworkers immediately tried to talk me out of it."Don't do anything rash, Cheryl. You knew Mr. Conway had a girlfriend, and you still showed up in a wedding dress. You brought this on yourself.""Mr. Conway only took one project away from you. He didn't even fire you. You should be grateful he let you off that easily."Their words snapped me back to reality.I turned to my boyfriend, Sean Conway. "So this was your plan all along?"Sean and I had been secretly dating for seven years. Every time I brought up marriage, he found some excuse to brush me off.So when he messaged me yesterday saying he wanted to propose, something had already felt off.At work, Sean went out of his way to avoid any hint of favoritism. Taking my side was out of the question. It was practically a miracle whenever he didn't single me out.So why would he suddenly want to propose to me at the company's annual party? Then I looked at Hannah Sloan, his secretary, leaning against his chest with a smug s

Anyone could tell the watch was worth only a few thousand dollars, but Sean was still touched. He smiled as he reached for it and nodded, his eyes glistening with emotion."You really put a lot of thought into this, Hannah. But I'm supposed to be the one proposing. How could I let you spend that much money on me?"He immediately transferred 200,000 dollars to make up for what she had spent. He even sent someone out to buy a diamond ring so he could propose to her properly. Our coworkers squealed with envy and cheered them on. I was the only one who couldn't smile.Sean had always told me that office relationships were against company policy, especially between a boss and a subordinate.Every time I wanted to go public with our relationship, he gave me the same excuse. As the boss, he had to set an example. For seven years, I had put up with everything because I didn't want to get in the way of his career or his ambitions.Yet now, just so Hannah wouldn't be embarrassed, he had a

Sean told me his pride couldn't handle being with a woman who made more money than he did. At the time, he gave me two choices.I could break up with him, and we could stay friends. Or I could hand over my shares and decision-making power, step down as his business partner, and become a director instead. For the sake of our relationship, I chose the second option. After that, Sean treated me better than ever, which only made me more afraid to tell him the truth about my family.Back then, I was too blinded by love to question any of it. But now that I was finally seeing our relationship for what it was, another possibility occurred to me.Maybe Sean's pride had never been the real reason. Maybe he had simply known I would give in and used it as an excuse to get me to hand everything over.Once I realized he didn't love me, everything that had never quite added up suddenly made perfect sense. When I got home, I started packing, then stopped. Why was I the one leaving? The house

I turned sharply to Sean."Sean, weren't you the one who texted me saying you were going to propose at the annual party? You were the one who told me to wear a wedding dress. So why are you acting like you had nothing to do with it?"Sean froze. Then he looked at Hannah.I followed his gaze and saw the color drain from her face. That told us everything.Hannah had sent the message.Remembering how she had humiliated me earlier that day, I scoffed. "Wow. You really planned this whole thing out, didn't you? With acting skills like that, you picked the wrong career."Hannah bit her lip and stayed silent, looking as though she were the one who had been wronged. The moment Sean saw how upset she looked, his heart went out to her, and he immediately stepped in to smooth things over."Enough. Give her a break. She's—"I cut him off and finished the sentence for him."She's young and doesn't know any better. She only did it because she thought she was helping me. She can be a little

The porcelain figures shattered across the floor.I nodded, picked up our photos, and tossed them straight into the trash."You're right. Let's throw it all away."That was the last straw for Sean. He pointed at me, his finger trembling with rage."Just you wait, Cheryl! I'm not just going to fire you. I'll make sure no one in this industry ever hires you again, and you can forget about seeing a single cent from that project."What he didn't know was that none of it mattered to me.Once I got Sean and Hannah out of my house, everything finally went quiet. Not long after, I received a notification confirming that my resignation had been approved.Sean followed through on his threat to blacklist me. He started spreading rumors throughout the industry that I had tried to pressure him into marrying me.He even took footage of me wearing a wedding dress at the annual party, edited it to make me look as bad as possible, and posted it online. Then someone leaked my private contact in

Chapter 6

Sean gave me an incredulous look. Then he seemed to remember the seven years we'd spent together. He scoffed, his gaze shifting between Susan and me. "Wow, Cheryl. You even paid Susan to go along with this? What exactly do you think you're going to get out of this stunt?"Susan froze, then quickly tried to explain, "Mr. Conway, that's not what happened—"But Sean cut her off. "Enough. I've always treated you well, and this is how you repay me? Pack your things and leave. I don't need someone this ungrateful working for me!"Hannah immediately seized the chance to take another shot at me. "Cheryl, just look at yourself. You're obviously broke. Where do you get the nerve to pretend you're some wealthy heiress?"Most of my coworkers stayed quiet, but a few of Hannah's lackeys were quick to pile on."Exactly. She can barely afford a cup of coffee most days, and now she's pretending she's loaded."I wasn't going to waste my breath on them. I turned around and walked away.Susan was

Hannah was immediately surrounded by reporters too. She looked anxiously at Sean, then let out a long sigh as the questions kept coming."No matter what happens, I have to tell the truth and clear Mr. Conway's name."Sean turned to her at once, worry flashing across his face. He knew that if Hannah told everyone what had really happened, the backlash would turn on her next.So he steeled himself and lied. "That's right. I knew from the start that Cheryl came from money. But why should that matter when you're choosing who to be with?"I'd only be with someone because I loved her. Whether she was rich or poor wouldn't change that."His words turned public opinion around once again. Plenty of people admired him for choosing love over money and rushed to his defense. But I knew better. He was only saying that to keep Hannah from taking the blame.Once, I made a minor mistake at work. All I wanted from Sean was a little reassurance, but he was cold about it."Cheryl, if you make a m

Sean picked up the cake he had left on the floor. "I missed your birthday because I was busy with work, so I thought I'd make it up to you today."This was how he always handled things. Whenever he upset me, he would bring me something to eat as a peace offering. In the past, I always gave in. I figured that if we were going to stay together anyway, there was no point in dragging out an argument. But this time, I had no intention of letting him smooth things over. Before I could stop him, Sean had already opened the cake box. But the message on the cake wasn't for me at all. It read, "Happy 26th Birthday, Hannah!"That was when I remembered seeing Hannah's résumé. Today was her birthday. If none of this had happened today, Sean would have been celebrating with her right now.He was about to put the candles on the cake when he finally noticed the message written across the top.He quickly tried to explain. "The bakery must've mixed up the order. I'll get you another one right now.

An influencer nearby happened to be livestreaming, and the entire confrontation ended up on camera.I noticed, but I didn't care. I had nothing to hide.I turned to Sean and scoffed. "Mr. Conway, weren't you the one telling everyone that I chased after you and you turned me down? There's nothing between us. So why do you care who I have dinner with?"Sean froze. He had been so worked up that he hadn't even realized he had just contradicted himself. The whole thing was still being livestreamed, and viewers immediately started calling Sean out for saying one thing and doing another.People in the restaurant were talking about it too."Didn't he say he wasn't interested in her? Then why is he acting like her boyfriend now?""Exactly. Didn't he already accept another woman's proposal? So what is he doing now? Is he trying to keep both women on the hook?""Seriously. One minute he's saying he wouldn't want Cheryl whether she's rich or not, and the next he's trying to control who she
