Chapter 1

Derek Sloan and rising movie star Nina Graham's relationship had been all over the news for three days.I kept it from my mom, Susan Grant, for just as long.As the story gained more attention, I stayed by Mom's side, never leaving her alone.Mom lay pale and weak in her hospital bed, her eyes drifting toward the door now and then."Where's Derek?" she asked.I swallowed the ache in my chest and answered softly, "He's busy with work right now. He'll come see you when he gets a chance."Hearing that, Mom smiled. She said, "I just haven't seen him in a while. He's busy with work, so don't give him a hard time."As long as you two are happy together, that's all that matters."I smiled back. After Mom fell asleep, I finally checked my phone, but there was nothing.Derek didn't send me a single text, make a call, or offer any explanation.I sat outside the hospital room, the cold from the chair seeping through my clothes and settling deep in my bones. Then a notification popped

The next day, Derek came home and handed me three copies of the divorce papers. He had already signed them.I stared at them for a long time. When he started to look impatient, I calmly took the papers and signed each one. After a long silence, Derek sighed. For once, he actually explained himself. "This is only a temporary divorce. I'm not going to abandon you."I was going to visit Susan after the party last night, but Nina had another depressive episode. I'm only doing this to cheer her up. Once she's doing better, you and I will get remarried."Blythe, I hope you won't go to Nina and make a scene. She developed depression because I married you, and I can't just turn my back on her."I looked at Derek's handsome face. There were dark circles under his eyes.He had probably stayed up all night with Nina again. My eyes fell on the divorce papers on the table. Our names were written in black and white, sitting close together on the page. The scent of fresh ink was still linger

Chapter 3

I took off my wedding ring and looked at the ugly scar on my wrist. As I watched Derek walk away, I placed the ring on the coffee table."You don't need to come get me. Let's let each other go, Derek. I don't want anything more to do with you."My voice was calm, but there were tears in my eyes.It was a goodbye meant only for me. Derek hadn't heard it, but even if he had, I didn't think it would have meant anything to him.Everyone who knew us knew I loved him deeply. I had even been willing to give up my life for him.My phone chimed with a notification. The message read, "Are you really coming to Fioren?"I picked up my phone, but my eyes fell on my crooked fingers.A wave of sadness washed over me.My fingers moved across the screen. "I've made up my mind. I'll go to Fioren once I've taken care of everything here."When I went to the courthouse to submit the signed divorce papers, I passed by a giant digital screen. It was showing a wedding dress advertisement.Nina s

Derek stopped speaking to me altogether. He seemed to think that I would do what I always did. He expected me to swallow my pride, try to appease him, and put the painting in his hands, begging him to take it.Instead, I calmly moved my things out and checked into a hotel.I booked two plane tickets to Fioren.Once our divorce was finalized, I planned to take Mom to Fioren. Then a call from the hospital shattered my hopes. When I got to the hospital, Mom was curled up in a corner, shivering in a thin hospital gown. Two large bodyguards stood beside her, watching her without a hint of concern.I rushed over, took off my coat, and draped it around her shoulders. Then, I helped her to her feet. When Mom saw me, tears filled her eyes, but she still forced a weak smile. "I'm okay. Don't worry.I saw how pale her lips were, and anger surged through me. I turned to the bodyguard beside her and demanded, "How dare you treat Mom like this! Was it…"But when I saw how sickly Mom looke

Over the phone, Derek added calmly, "I'll have our classmates and your doctor tell them that you are delusional and that you're just making things up."I'll also call the police."I opened my mouth to speak. The cold wind burned my throat, and I broke into a coughing fit. "Will they even believe it?"Even over the phone, Derek sounded as arrogant as ever. His tone was casual. "Our classmates and your medical records are proof enough. Blythe, you have to face the consequences of your actions."I was silent for a moment. Then I replied, "Understood. I hope you keep your word.""Of course. I've already saved Susan's life twice. A third time won't be a problem," he said.My heart ached even more at Derek's words.Back then, Derek had been a student struggling financially. Mom had seen how hard he worked to put himself through school, so she hired him as her part-time personal assistant.Once, Mom was abducted and held in an abandoned warehouse outside the city. Derek risked his

It took most of the night, but I finally got Mom settled.I asked the nurse where the kind man who had paid for everything was. She smiled gently and said, "He said he had something to take care of. He'll be here later."When I saw how peacefully Mom slept, I finally let out a sigh of relief. The exhaustion hit me all at once, and I realized how hungry I was. After I finished a sandwich, I returned to the private room and opened the door. A tall figure was sitting inside. He sat beside Mom's bed, gently tucking the blanket around her.At the sound of the door, he turned around. His handsome face looked a little tired."Heath?" I blurted. "What are you doing back in the country?"Heath Lindon was the son of one of Dad's old friends. He was also my senior. After I got together with Derek, I gave up the chance to study abroad for him.Heath was furious with me. We had a huge fight over it and never spoke again. He didn't reach out to me, and I was too ashamed to contact him or o

I stumbled into Mom's hospital room, but it was empty. There was only a letter. It lay quietly on her pillow. With trembling hands, I opened it."Blythe, don't be sad. I'm just going to be with your dad. Derek was right. Some debts can never be repaid. He saved my life twice. Without him, I would have died long ago."But none of this has anything to do with you. You have a bright future ahead of you, and you shouldn't be held back by this debt. Move forward, and try to live a happy life."My mind went blank, and I collapsed to the floor.…I didn't tell anyone and handled Mom's funeral alone.I carried her urn and slowly climbed up the hill, one step at a time.A drizzle settled on my shoulders. The cemetery workers had already opened the grave for me.I placed Mom's ashes inside. They rested beside another urn that had faded with age.The photos on the headstone showed Mom and Dad smiling gently.I crouched and gently wiped the rain from the stone. "Mom, Dad, I'll come vis

After the chaos finally ended, I lay in my hospital bed. I absentmindedly touched my stomach. There had been a baby growing inside me.And before I even knew it, the baby was gone.Maybe it was for the best. With a dad who didn't love them and a mom who was already exhausted, perhaps it was better that they were never born.Derek called me. "Blythe, what the hell are you saying now? It's all over the news! What do you want? Are you trying to drive Nina to her death?"I cut him off.Only then did I realize how hoarse my voice had become. "Mom's gone."There was silence on the other end.I continued, "She took her life in an abandoned warehouse. Mom overdosed on sleeping pills. She's been saving them for a long time."She already knew about you and Nina, and she had seen all the scandal about you two."Derek, she told me not to hate you. But I don't want to listen to her. I've been a handful since I was a kid, and this time, I am going against her words once more."There was s

In the end, I decided to see Derek one last time. The door to the house was open. When I was about to knock, I heard voices inside."Derek, what do you take me for?" It was Nina's voice.Derek sounded tired. "Nina, I see you as a sister. You're family to me. I won't blame you for lying to me about having depression."But Blythe and I are married. I'm still going to spend the rest of my life with her."Nina scoffed. "You really think Blythe will stay with you? Susan's death is between the two of you!"Derek was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Blythe loves me. If I treat her well from now on, she'll forgive me."Nina, once things settle down, Blythe and I will leave the country. No one will remember any of this. Please, just listen to me and get rid of the baby. Otherwise, Blythe will never forgive me."Nina swept everything off the table and onto the floor.Suddenly, she laughed. "Derek, what if Blythe found out that you deliberately leaked Susan's whereabouts before she wa
