Chapter 1

On the day of the ceremony, I slipped into the chapel early and removed the slip with my name on it, making sure Victor couldn't draw me.When the ceremony began, Victor casually drew a slip from the box and handed it to one of his men."Who will Victor choose?""Who else? Elia, the Castellano heiress. She and Victor have been engaged since childhood."Whispers rippled through the crowd. Everyone was certain Victor would choose me.I had once believed that too."Elia, come here." Victor's mother, Teresa Moretti, waved me over.Amid everyone's congratulations, I walked slowly to the center of the chapel, the very spot where they'd had sex the night before."Mrs. Moretti."Mrs. Moretti took my hand with a warm smile. "We're family now. No need to be so formal.""Mrs. Moretti," I cut her off, "why don't you see who Victor actually picked first? What if it's not me?"His man unfolded the slip and read aloud, "The woman chosen by God is... Chloe Green."The entire hall went dead silent. The

After the announcement, I turned and walked away.Victor chased after me. "Elia! Who are you marrying? How come I didn't know about this?"I stopped and smiled. "I don't think our relationship requires me to report every detail of my life to you.""Elia, I know you're upset, but Chloe is the wife God chose for me. My hands are tied.""Victor, don't act like you had no choice in this." I looked him straight in the eye, fighting the urge to be sick.He had engineered the whole thing himself, yet he was still trying to cast himself as a victim of fate."Elia, Chloe is a kind girl. She wouldn't mind sharing a home with you." He stepped closer, his tone dripping with condescension. "Once I officially take over, I'll bring you in. Chloe doesn't know anything about the business. You can help me manage the docks and the arms deals. I promise you, aside from the title, you'll have the same authority as the Donna."I couldn't help but laugh."Victor, what makes you think I would ever stoop so lo

Three days later, I leaned against a black SUV at the docks, spinning my car keys out of boredom.Tonight's deal had been arranged two weeks ago. The buyer had specifically requested that Victor and I show up in person to inspect the shipment.Minutes later, a flashy red convertible screeched to a halt beside the shipping containers.Victor stepped out first, followed by Chloe, teetering on four-inch heels in a completely out-of-place white couture dress.I frowned. "This is a confidential deal, and you show up in that flashy car with an outsider?"Chloe flinched and shrank behind Victor. "Elia, I'm sorry... it's my fault. I was just worried about Victor being out this late. I wanted to keep him company. If you're unhappy, I'll leave right away."Victor pulled Chloe into his arms and glared at me. "Chloe is about to become the Donna. How is she an outsider? You're just jealous!"I stared at him as if he were an idiot and decided he wasn't worth arguing with.Arguing with a man whose he

The hospital room reeked of disinfectant. When Chloe walked in, I was propped up against the headboard, idly watching the birds outside the window."Elia, sweetheart, you're awake?" She walked to my bedside, a flash of barely concealed smugness in her eyes as she stroked the enormous diamond on her ring finger. "Victor says we're getting married in four days. You're my best friend, so I'd love for you to be my bridesmaid.""Best friend?" I repeated the words softly and laughed. "Is that what best friends do? Shove each other into the line of fire?"Chloe's eyes immediately reddened. She grabbed my hand. "I'm sorry, Elia. You know I've never been through anything like that before. I was just so scared..."I stared at her blankly. She sighed. "I know you blame me. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have gotten hurt. I wanted to come see you last night, but Victor said you get hurt all the time, that it's nothing serious. Elia, please don't be mad at me, okay?"I pulled my hand free and w

Dante didn't stay long. Before he left, he pressed a kiss to my forehead and said he needed to handle the situation at the docks.I nodded and watched his tall figure disappear down the hallway.A few minutes later, the door was shoved open.Victor barged in, his face dark as a thundercloud."Elia, when did you start messing around with my uncle?"I was about to tell him that my husband was his uncle, but he cut me off. "Don't think I can't see what you're scheming, Elia. Give it up. My uncle is way out of your league. Stop parading yourself in front of him. He would never look twice at someone like you."I leaned back against the headboard. Suddenly, I had no desire to explain.I raised an eyebrow and smiled. "How do you know he wouldn't?"Victor's brow knotted. He jabbed a finger at me. "I knew it! Elia, have you no shame? Just because I offered to make you my mistress, you're trying to get back at me like this?"He took a deep breath and sneered. "Keep dreaming. My uncle is getting

Victor laughed as if he had heard the most absurd joke in the world. "Elia, have you completely lost your mind? My uncle would never look twice at you."The words had barely left his mouth when Dante walked in behind him.Victor lowered his voice and glared at me. "Elia, I know you're jealous because I'm marrying Chloe. Is this how you're trying to make me change my mind? I'm warning you, my uncle has a temper. Stop making a scene, or even I won't be able to protect you.""What's going on here?" Dante stepped up to us.Victor pulled me behind him. Before he could speak, I let out a soft laugh. "Victor says I'm not worthy of you. He's trying to talk me into leaving you.""Not worthy?" Dante scoffed. He pulled me out of Victor's grasp and locked an arm around me. "Do you think so too?"I met his gaze and looped my arms around his neck. "Of course not. My husband is quite the catch. But if you don't make it official soon, people really will think you don't want me."Dante drew me into his

Soon, the day of my wedding to Dante arrived. This was originally supposed to be Victor and Chloe's wedding day as well. But after Dante's order, Victor had called off the ceremony.I had deliberately leaked news of my upcoming wedding. Combined with the media's extensive coverage of Victor begging me to stay with tears in his eyes at the engagement dinner, Chloe naturally assumed today's grand wedding was for Victor and me.So when Victor entered the lavish church in a custom-tailored suit, Chloe completely lost control. She stormed into the ceremony like a woman unhinged, charged straight at me, and jabbed a finger in my face."Elia, you shameless tramp! Did you force Victor to marry you?""How long are you going to keep lying to yourself? On the day of the selection, Victor said to your face that he didn't love you, and now you pull this stunt to force his hand? Doesn't that make you sick?!"She raised her hand to hit me.Victor rushed over and grabbed her wrist. "Are you done makin

I walked to the center of the room and produced a wax-sealed letter. "The late Don Salvatore Moretti entrusted this to me before he died. It states clearly that whoever marries me becomes the next head of the Moretti Family.""No... that's impossible. How could Grandfather have left something like that with you?" Victor was dumbstruck.Perhaps it never occurred to him that the Don's seat he had wanted so badly had been within easy reach all along. He could never have imagined that the late Don himself had placed the shortcut to the pinnacle of power in his hands, only for Victor to throw it away for Chloe.I watched shock twist Victor's face, then smiled coldly and broke the seal in front of everyone."There's no doubt about it. That's Don Salvatore's handwriting.""Since Elia Castellano married Dante, Dante is the new Don.""Victor must be sick with regret. He gave up the Castellano heiress for a woman from the slums and handed the Don's seat to someone else on a silver platter.""Sti

I went to the cemetery with Dante for Victor's funeral.A light rain fell. Black umbrellas formed a solemn procession against the gray sky.I stood before the headstone, looking at Victor's photograph. I felt nothing, only a quiet, rueful sigh deep within me.Who would have thought he would throw his life away over a woman? After leaving the cemetery, I went to the county jail. When I saw Chloe again, she looked dazed. But the moment she saw me, she threw herself against the bars, her eyes bloodshot, screaming like a woman who had lost her mind. "Are you happy now?! Elia, are you thrilled to see what I've become?!"I said nothing in the face of her hysteria.I simply looked at her, then took a worn velvet box from my purse and set it gently on the ledge."Chloe, your own greed brought you to this point. This is the gift you gave me when we became friends. I'm giving it back. Whatever we had is over."I turned to leave."Elia!" Chloe's voice came from behind me, choked with tears.I sto
