Chapter 1

My boyfriend, Lucas Carter, and my best friend, Kimberly Wendell, turned the corner and disappeared from my sight. Not once did they bother to turn back to see if I was still following them.I stood rooted to the spot for a moment before spinning on my heel and leaving. After I returned to the hospital, my colleague quirked a brow and sidled over."Didn't you change shifts so you could go on a date? Is it over already?""Yeah, it's over."Changing into my nurse uniform, I sat back down at my workstation.Due to the busy nature of our jobs as a nurse and a doctor, Lucas and I hardly ever got the chance to go out on an official date. It was probably less than ten times a year.Since it was a rare opportunity for him to have a day off, I had asked my colleague in advance to switch shifts with me. Even if it was just to hold hands as we strolled through the mall, that was still better than nothing. However, Kimberly's sudden decision to join us thoroughly messed up my plans.Befor

I was briefly stunned when I heard that, and it took me a moment before I turned to shoot Lucas a dumbfounded look."What?"As he shut his eyes, he spoke in a tone so calm that it was as though he were talking about the weather. "Earlier today, you chose to vanish without saying a single word, making Kimberly and me both worried sick about you. "It wasn't easy for the two of us to finally get some time off. So even if you aren't considerate enough toward me, you should at least feel bad for Kimberly. She isn't your nanny."When he finished speaking, I sat there, unmoving. However, it felt like there was a hole in my body, letting icy winds gush into me.Worried about me? Then why hadn’t I received a single call or message from them? Had they really been worried, or did they simply think I had ruined their fun?"Look at you. All I did was lecture you a little, and you’re already crying."Lucas' eyes were filled with exasperation as he gazed at me in the way one would at a chil

Chapter 3

I couldn't stop my hands from shaking as an inexplicable wave of revulsion welled in me.Two of the people closest to my heart had actually placed a bet on my emotions.Slowly turning my head to look at Lucas, I said in a firm, unwavering tone, "Let's break up."Immediately, silence descended upon the table. Lucas stared at me in shock. "You—"However, before he could say anything more, Kimberly leaned over and said carefully, "Anna, are you mad at me? We really were just talking about work last night. I didn’t deliberately make him stay with me."Upon hearing that, Lucas knitted his brows, and when he turned back to me, the shock in his eyes had given way to annoyance.Thinking that I was just throwing a temper tantrum, he said coldly, "That's enough, Kimberly. No need to explain to her any further. She's always been this impulsive and caused trouble for everyone else around her."Kimberly wanted to say more, but Lucas was already dragging her away, leaving me alone at the ta

As a prominent figure at the hospital, Lucas was the subject of no shortage of gossip. One of them was about how he brought Kimberly some nourishing soup every single day without fail to accelerate her recovery. Another one was about the two of them working together to publish a paper in a prestigious journal, thereby earning them recognition from the hospital director.Whenever my colleagues asked me about them, I would simply shake my head and say that I didn't know anything. One afternoon, Kimberly suddenly intercepted me, her hand reaching out to grab my sleeve as though it were the most natural thing in the world."Anna, are you really going to ignore me, your best friend, as well, even though it's Lucas you're upset with? Seriously, you two. You're both stubborn as a mule. I'll help you smooth things over, so could you just give in this once?"Staring at this woman who had been my best friend for so many years, I suddenly found her to be as cold and unfamiliar as a stranger.

Chapter 5

I took a taxi back to the apartment I shared with Lucas and began packing my valuable belongings. In the end, I only had a small suitcase's worth of things to bring with me despite having stayed there for three years. When they learned that I had resigned, my parents took time off work specifically to prepare a feast for me."Anna, no matter what you choose to do now, we'll both support your decision."After the meal, they proudly held out a plane ticket to me. It was a flight to Corlista in Nilovale, scheduled to depart the following day."You've been talking about wanting to go to Corlista for years, so take this opportunity to go and enjoy yourself. Come back only when you feel like it, okay?"For a moment, I stared in shock at the flight ticket before taking in the firm, reassuring look in their eyes. A wave of warmth immediately washed over me, warming me from the inside out.Tears streamed down my cheeks as I threw myself into their arms for a tight hug and shoved all my wo

Third-Person POV"You forced her to take the blame? Why would you do that?" Kimberly asked.Lucas let out a long sigh while massaging his throbbing temples. "I know you very well. I was worried that, after making such a serious mistake during surgery, you would have immediately handed in your resignation. However, it's different for Anna. She's just a nurse, so it's not uncommon for her to make a mistake like that… I just didn't expect the patient's family to find out about it."Kimberly instantly jumped to her feet at his explanation, her eyes reddening. She snapped through gritted teeth, "Lucas Carter! Anna has always been very dedicated to her job! All these years, she's never once made a mistake! How am I supposed to look her in the eye again after what you did?"For a moment, the two stared at each other, neither quite knowing what to say. After leaving Kimberly's office, Lucas found himself feeling somewhat dazed, his steps faltering briefly. He opened his chat history with

Immediately, my heart leaped into my throat."Is your heart hurting? Why didn't you say something if you were feeling unwell?"Despite Frederick waving his hand and denying it, I still took him to the hospital."Anna?"I wasn't at all surprised to see Lucas here, as this was the best hospital in the city.A complex wave of emotions rose in me, but it died down soon after.Giving Lucas an easy smile, I tugged Frederick out from behind me. "Are you busy? Could you take a look at my boyfriend?"When Lucas heard that, the smile that had been forming on his lips froze. "No, I'm not busy."As far as I could remember, Lucas had always been calm and collected when it came to work. Now, however, he barely managed to ask Frederick how he was doing before his eyes reddened with emotion."Doctor, I'm fine. It's just that I've had heart surgery before, so Anna couldn't help worrying, that's all."He used one hand to play with my fingers while his other typed something on his phone. My p

Frederick didn't get out of bed until after Kimberly had left. He pressed his head against my back sleepily. He asked, "Babe, who was that?""A friend."Time flew by, and before I knew it, a week had passed. Frederick and I spent that time continuing our hunt for the right countertop material. What I didn't expect was for Lucas to call me again. I had changed my phone number after going to Corlista, so I had no idea how he had gotten my new number. When I answered my phone, an unfamiliar voice came over the line."Hello, are you a friend of this phone's owner? He's gotten drunk and is insisting that you come pick him up and take him home."When I arrived at the lounge bar the stranger mentioned, I found Lucas sitting in a private room, his head drooping low to his chest. The instant he saw me, the dark look on his face melted away like snow come spring. He tightly grasped my hand and I could feel how his skin was burning hot to the touch."Anna, you came. I had a nightmare
