Asteria Goldburn realized her uniform didn’t fit when she couldn’t pull the zipper all the way up the morning of the first day of senior year. She stood in front of her full-length mirror, finger hooked around the stubborn metal tab at the back of her skirt, willing it to climb up and stay up so that she wouldn’t be any later than she was for school. Eventually, after a couple more minutes of twisting around and on the verge of bursting into tears, she was finally able to get the zip to stay where it belonged. Christopher Neil’s house looked exactly like the kind of place legendary high school parties were thrown. The house was big and open, with a modern floor plan that made it the perfect setting for Friday night parties and other forms of teenage debauchery. The party was in full swing by the time the girls got there, as evidenced by the bass thumping through the windows and the members of the student body already loitering outside on the front lawn. Maya was out of the car before it had fully stopped moving. Throughout the ride there, she had been thankfully more occupied with texting on her phone than trying to get under Asteria’s skin. “Hi guys.” Misty’s quiet voice said apologetically. At large parties like this, Misty normally wouldn’t have gotten an invite, but Christopher wasn’t a social snob. And Paige had made it clear ages ago that anyone who invited her anywhere would have to be fine with Misty also showing up. She’d made an effort from her usual more casual and laid-back look.
