All Chapters of Bound By His Protection : Chapter 21 - Chapter 30

For one second, I thought my heart had stopped. Then it slammed against my ribs so violently that I was certain the person outside the archive would hear it through the shelves, through the darkness, through Kaelen's hand clamped over my mouth. The door handle turned again, slowly, deliberately, and every muscle in my body locked beneath his grip. Kaelen moved before the door opened, his massive frame forcing me deeper into the narrow darkness between the metal shelves until there was nowhere left for me to retreat. His chest pressed against mine, his shoulder blocking the thin strip of corridor light beneath the door, and his palm covered my mouth so completely that my breath burned hot against his skin. The lock clicked. The sound was tiny, almost delicate, yet it seemed to split the entire room open. The archive door began to swing inward, and Kaelen turned his body at precisely the right angle, shielding me from whoever stood beyond it. I could smell sandalwood and leather beneath

My breath caught. His gaze, dark and unreadable beneath the emergency light, dropped to my mouth for the briefest fraction of a second before returning to my eyes, and that tiny betrayal of attention struck harder than the pressure of his hand around my wrist. Kaelen Thorne had spent weeks teaching me that he could stand close without touching, protect me without looking at me too long, and remain professionally distant even when every instinct in him seemed built around keeping me within reach. Now his fingers were locked around my wrist, his body had trapped mine against the cold service wall, and his breathing was no longer the controlled rhythm of the man who could walk through a gunfight without blinking. I felt the pulse beating beneath his callused palm, fast and hard enough to betray him. I swallowed, then managed a crooked smile because apparently self-preservation had never been one of my more reliable talents. “Is this the part where you break my wrist, or did professional

The world went entirely silent, the structural vents of the gallery continuing to hum with my father’s distant, clipped cadence, but the words themselves stopped making sense. Marriage. Elena. My childhood friend, the only person in this suffocating Valerius empire who looked at me without counting the monetary value of my flesh, was being repurposed into a lock for my cell. The air in my lungs felt like liquid lead, heavy and toxic, burning all the way down as the realization settled into my bones. Arthur wasn't just managing a security leak tonight. He was finalizing the terms of my sale to Sebastian Cross.A sudden, sharp rustle of heavy velvet fractured my paralysis. Before I could even draw a ragged breath to steady my skyrocketing pulse, a massive, solid weight slammed into me, driving me backward until my spine collided with the stone wall behind the long gallery curtains. The thick, suffocating fabric of the drapes fell shut around us, plunging our immediate world into absolut

The footsteps outside the study had stopped. I could feel Kaelen there without seeing him, a silent presence separated from me by nothing more than a thick wooden door and my father’s authority. My fingers remained suspended above the marriage contract, close enough to touch the paper but refusing to make contact with it. Arthur watched me from behind his desk, waiting for the inevitable surrender he had mistaken for obedience. The room smelled of old wood, rain-damp fabric, and the faint sandalwood that still clung stubbornly to my clothes from Kaelen’s coat. Every breath reminded me of what had happened behind that curtain, of his hands framing my face, of the way he had kissed me as though the entire world outside that hidden corner could burn and he would still find me in the ashes. Arthur cleared his throat. “You will meet Elena tonight.” I finally lowered my hand. “You’ve already decided everything, haven’t you?” “The important decisions have been made.” “Then why am I here?” Hi

“Kaelen stays here.” The words struck harder than they should have. I stood in the corridor outside Arthur's study with one hand still resting against the doorframe, my body angled toward the man who had become the only place in this house where I could breathe without feeling watched. Kaelen stood behind me, close enough that the heat of his body reached my back, and for one suspended second neither of us moved. Arthur had not looked at Kaelen when he gave the order. He had looked directly at me. That was how I knew this wasn't about security, protocol, or the ridiculous excuse of a family dinner. He was separating us deliberately. He had seen something between us, or at the very least, he had noticed that I no longer walked through this house alone. My fingers tightened around the edge of the doorframe. “How convenient,” I said. Arthur's expression remained perfectly composed. “The dinner is family only.” “Elena isn't my family.” “She will be.” My stomach tightened. Behind me, Kaele
