Semua Bab The Name They Stole: Bab 1 - Bab 10

The next day, I was called in by upper management.I'd barely sat down when a complaint was tossed in front of me. "Ms. Rivera, someone has reported that you blocked these paintings over a personal grudge."Twelve paintings, examined by dozens of experts, all cleared. And you hold up a $150 million deal over some old materials and an illegible signature?"Fury shot through me. I placed the photograph of the hidden signature on the desk. "The canvas, pigments, and public records don't match. And there is another name beneath the brown overpainting."My supervisor glanced at it. "That's suspicious at best. It doesn't prove anything."I had my own memories of the year I turned fourteen.Twenty years ago, the sketches and old photographs had all been carted away. Grandma was so frantic she could barely get a word out.I still remembered her leaning over the police station counter, sobbing and gesturing as she tried to tell them her paintings had been stolen. All she got back was one line:

I took an overnight bus back to the town. Sixteen hours. I didn't close my eyes once.I was afraid the box would be empty. Even more afraid that whatever was inside still wouldn't be enough to bring down Evelyn.I arrived at Maria's house at dawn. She had grown so old she could barely walk. When she saw me, her lips trembled for a long moment. Then she pulled me into a hug and burst into tears. "What took you so long!"At that, I broke down too.We held each other and wept, as if trying to pour out every tear we had held back for twenty years. When the crying stopped, she dragged a rusted tin box out from under the bed."After Evelyn first looked over the paintings, your grandma felt that something was wrong. She said the woman looked at them like a wolf eyeing meat. So she hid the earliest sketches and receipts and brought them to me that very night."I pried the lid open with a knife. Inside, wrapped in cloth, was the first draft of Madonna of the Red Rock.Where each figure stood, h

The guards came back and dragged me toward the exit. I didn't resist. I kept looking at Grandma's face on the screen. After twenty years, so many people had finally seen her face.As I passed Evelyn, I stopped. "When she was pounding on the glass that night, you were inside. Weren't you?"Every drop of color drained from Evelyn's face.I stared at her, so full of hatred my voice trembled. "You built your career on the life of a woman in her seventies. You fed off it for twenty years. Evelyn, can you honestly sleep at night?"She grabbed the podium as her legs buckled, nearly crumpling to her knees. The people around her caught every second on their phones. That night, the video hit every platform.Who Stole Rosa's Paintings. Artist in Her Seventies Froze to Death Outside Gallery. Evelyn Cut the Real Artist Out of a Photograph. All three topics shot to the top of the trending lists.People dug up every interview Evelyn had ever given. She had once looked into a camera and said, "In the

The day the news reached the town, Maria sat in her doorway and cried all afternoon.Between sobs, she called toward the place where Grandma had lived. "Rosa, the paintings are back! No one will ever dare call you crazy again!"The neighbors started bringing things out too.Old frames. Hardened paintbrushes. Small paintings Grandma had given them over the years. Before, they would only say, "Some old lady who painted gave me this."Now, they stood before the cameras and said it again and again. "This was painted by the artist Rosa Rivera."One man slapped himself across the face, cursing himself for being too cowardly to help when he watched Grandma chase after the truck all those years ago.The fear and guilt the townspeople had carried for twenty years finally came spilling out.Museums and art databases around the world began correcting the attributions. The artist credit for Madonna of the Red Rock was finally corrected to: Rosa Rivera. Beneath it, a note: Previously misattributed

Three months later, I built a small studio on the old foundation of the shed.No glass walls. No fancy lights.Just a few old tables, a scanner, and tools collected from the neighbors.I spread out the sketches, old brushes, palette knives, church wax, and the surviving small paintings. Little by little, I tried to reconstruct Grandma's methods. She laid down the red clay base first, then pressed in the black shadows. Cracked canvas was backed with cloth and sealed with wax. The eyes came last.I failed more than a dozen times. The color was either too bright or dead and flat. The wax was either too thick or wouldn't stick at all.I scraped it off and started over, again and again. That was exactly how Grandma used to do it.When a painting didn't work, she scraped it off and started over.On the nineteenth try, I finally painted a pair of eyes that looked like hers.I did not sign my own name. On the back, I wrote only: Reconstructed using the methods of Rosa Rivera.I posted the phot
