Chloe Hart's head snapped up as if she hadn't heard me correctly. "Ms. Rivera, what did you say?"

"I said these paintings cannot be sold."

The smile vanished from her face. "On what grounds?"

I looked up at Chloe. Spread across my desk were high-resolution photographs of her mother's paintings.

Twelve in total. Every single one had once hung in our leaky shed.

I zoomed in on the photograph of the back of Madonna of the Red Rock.

"Your mother has always claimed she painted this in her professional studio in Washington, D.C. Then explain why the back of the canvas is patched with old clothing."

Chloe frowned. "An artist can use whatever materials she wants."

"What about the old church wax? The cheap resin? And this red clay pigment? Over twenty years ago, the only place that sold it was a general store in a desert town."

I zoomed in further. Beneath the brown overpainting, faint black strokes showed through, spelling what looked like Rivera.

Rivera was Grandma's surname, the one I'd known my whole life. The name the Harts had buried under paint for twenty years.

I pointed at the screen, jaw clenched. "Care to explain this?"

Chloe stared for a few seconds, then scoffed. "That's just an illegible smudge. Probably a mark left by whoever sold the canvas."

I pushed the file back toward her. "Until this is all sorted out, the application is denied."

Chloe rose to her feet. "Ms. Rivera, let me remind you of my mother's credentials. Evelyn Hart. Collections in the world's top museums. The highest art awards. A charitable foundation. International exhibitions. Authenticated by dozens of experts."

Her voice kept rising. "The entire world accepts these paintings as my mother's work. Who are you to say there's a problem?"

She slammed her palm on the desk and shouted, "Do you have any idea how big this deal is? $150 million is only the opening estimate. These paintings are headed for museums around the world. Can you cover that kind of loss?"

I stared her down, fury surging in my chest. "This isn't a place where whoever shouts loudest wins. If you can't explain where these paintings came from, forget $150 million. Even if they were worth $1.5 billion, not one of them is getting past my desk!"

After a few seconds, she clenched her fists and dropped her voice to a near-whisper. "Rivera, think very carefully about who you're crossing. Nobody gets to stand in the Harts' way. You're going to regret this."

She snatched up the file and stalked out in her high heels.

The door slammed shut behind her.

I stared at her retreating figure and suddenly remembered the morning I found Grandma.

She was kneeling at the gallery entrance, her pant legs frozen to the steps. I tried to lift her three times and couldn't.

The fabric finally tore, but she still didn't wake up.

And just on the other side of the glass, her Madonna of the Red Rock hung beneath a heating vent.

For twenty years, I had never forgotten that image. Not for a single second.

Grandma. This time, I'm going to make them write your name back where it belongs. Every last letter.

Three months later, I built a small studio on the old foundation of the shed.No glass walls. No fancy lights.Just a few old tables, a scanner, and tools collected from the neighbors.I spread out the sketches, old brushes, palette knives, church wax, and the surviving small paintings. Little by little, I tried to reconstruct Grandma's methods. She laid down the red clay base first, then pressed in the black shadows. Cracked canvas was backed with cloth and sealed with wax. The eyes came last.I failed more than a dozen times. The color was either too bright or dead and flat. The wax was either too thick or wouldn't stick at all.I scraped it off and started over, again and again. That was exactly how Grandma used to do it.When a painting didn't work, she scraped it off and started over.On the nineteenth try, I finally painted a pair of eyes that looked like hers.I did not sign my own name. On the back, I wrote only: Reconstructed using the methods of Rosa Rivera.I posted the phot

After things settled down, I went back to the town. The large sign that once read "Evelyn Hart Desert Art Gallery" was gone. Only a few screw holes and scrape marks remained in the concrete.I stood there for a long time. The satisfaction I felt was beyond words.Maria had tidied up Grandma's grave. No expensive headstone. Just a new wooden marker with the words: Rosa Rivera, Painter. The neighbors placed her old brushes and broken frames beside it. Nobody called her the crazy old lady anymore.I knelt at the grave and pressed the scrap I had carried for twenty years to my chest. "Grandma, the paintings are back. Your name is back."Everyone knows now. You weren't some crazy woman making a scene at the gallery. You were just trying to get your own paintings back."In twenty years, I never cried scrubbing dishes. Never cried taking an exam with a burning fever. Never cried when the chemicals ate through my hands. Never cried when I was turned away at every door. Never cried when I was p

The day the news reached the town, Maria sat in her doorway and cried all afternoon.Between sobs, she called toward the place where Grandma had lived. "Rosa, the paintings are back! No one will ever dare call you crazy again!"The neighbors started bringing things out too.Old frames. Hardened paintbrushes. Small paintings Grandma had given them over the years. Before, they would only say, "Some old lady who painted gave me this."Now, they stood before the cameras and said it again and again. "This was painted by the artist Rosa Rivera."One man slapped himself across the face, cursing himself for being too cowardly to help when he watched Grandma chase after the truck all those years ago.The fear and guilt the townspeople had carried for twenty years finally came spilling out.Museums and art databases around the world began correcting the attributions. The artist credit for Madonna of the Red Rock was finally corrected to: Rosa Rivera. Beneath it, a note: Previously misattributed

On the fourth day, Chloe came to see me again. She wore no makeup, and her hair was a mess.Chloe came in and slapped a stack of investigation documents onto my desk. She sat down, and her first words were still about making a deal. "How much will it take to make you stop? Take the paintings. Fix the attributions. Can you get people online to shut up?"I could hardly believe my ears.Even now, all she could think about was damage control."Get the internet to shut up?" I laughed, though there was no humor in it."Can you bring my grandmother back? Can you make it so she never froze to death outside that gallery?"Chloe flinched. "I didn't know! I really didn't know the paintings were stolen!"My whole life, everyone told me my mother was a genius."I looked at her coldly. "She only lied to you. But she stole my grandmother's entire life."That sentence seemed to drain whatever fight she had left.A long time passed before Chloe slumped in her chair and asked, "What kind of person was y

The guards came back and dragged me toward the exit. I didn't resist. I kept looking at Grandma's face on the screen. After twenty years, so many people had finally seen her face.As I passed Evelyn, I stopped. "When she was pounding on the glass that night, you were inside. Weren't you?"Every drop of color drained from Evelyn's face.I stared at her, so full of hatred my voice trembled. "You built your career on the life of a woman in her seventies. You fed off it for twenty years. Evelyn, can you honestly sleep at night?"She grabbed the podium as her legs buckled, nearly crumpling to her knees. The people around her caught every second on their phones. That night, the video hit every platform.Who Stole Rosa's Paintings. Artist in Her Seventies Froze to Death Outside Gallery. Evelyn Cut the Real Artist Out of a Photograph. All three topics shot to the top of the trending lists.People dug up every interview Evelyn had ever given. She had once looked into a camera and said, "In the

The room erupted.Chloe screamed for the guards to drag me out, but people in the audience were already on their feet shouting, "Show the photo!""What are you afraid of? Let everyone see!"The shouts grew louder. The livestream chat flooded with the same demand: Show the photo! The staff couldn't hold out any longer. They took the photograph and projected it onto the giant screen. The moment it appeared, the entire room went silent. On the right stood a young Evelyn. On the left stood Grandma, sun-darkened and thin, her apron covered in paint, one hand resting on the easel holding Madonna of the Red Rock.First came silence. Then a roar, and everything descended into chaos.Evelyn gripped the podium, her hands shaking too badly to hold the microphone steady.I shook off the guards and rushed to the front of the aisle. "The woman in this photograph was Rosa Rivera. She was my grandmother, and she was the true artist behind these paintings!"My voice came out sharp and hoarse. "She neve
