Chapter 1

An hour to go before the wedding.I sat at the vanity, staring at my phone—endless photos of Grace and me, crammed together in a grid of memories. My chest gave a sharp, ugly twist.None of them were overly intimate. Just her arm looped through mine, or her head tipped against my shoulder, laughing. Street corners we'd wandered, sunrises we'd watched, subway cars we'd squeezed into. Most of them were snapshots, nothing posed. But in every single one, her eyes sparkled like they'd caught starlight.I flicked back to her message from half an hour ago:Thorne, I'm sorry—I can't let Fred die with regret. It's just a ceremony, just to give him that one last wish before he goes. After it's over, you and I will get our papers sorted. You understand, don't you?A year ago—hell, a month ago—if Grace had asked me to hand over my own wedding because Fred's cancer diagnosis came in on the big day, I would've been gutted. Torn apart. But now I'm leaving. Going back to my pack.To a world they'd cal

Chapter 2

I woke the next morning to the sound of moving boxes in the living room.My internal clock had me up early anyway, but today the dull ache in my chest seemed to have faded another notch. I walked out to find Grace directing a crew of movers, hauling cardboard boxes stamped with Fred's Personal Items straight into the master bedroom.Morning light spilled across her busy profile. Everything looked so natural—like this was exactly how it was supposed to be."You're up?"She didn't even glance at me. Her tone was flat, like she was commenting on the weather."Fred's health is fragile. The doctor says keeping his spirits up might actually give him a fighting chance against the cancer, so I'm having him move in. Give him a home first.""What about me?" I asked. My voice came out steadier than I expected. She finally stopped and turned, a tiny crease forming between her brows—like my question was an inconvenience."Guest room. You're always in the study anyway. Besides, Fred needs care—it's

Chapter 3

Day three. Dawn had barely cracked when I woke. The guest room bed was hard and cold—nothing like the plush mattress Grace and I had picked out together in the master. But somehow I'd slept better than I had in months. Like a weight I'd carried for ten years was finally about to lift.I'd just finished washing up when I heard the drag of suitcases across the living room floor.I pushed the door open and found Grace dressed in casual travel gear, two oversized suitcases parked beside her. She was leaning down, fixing Fred's collar, her voice dripping with intimacy."Flights are booked. I picked that oceanfront hotel in Hawaii specially—great views, perfect for relaxing. Maybe the change of scenery will even help you heal faster."Fred grinned and slid an arm around her waist—but his eyes found mine over her shoulder. Barely concealed triumph.I stood at the end of the hallway, watching the whole pathetic scene. It was almost absurd.Grace heard me and glanced up, her tone as natural as

Chapter 4

Grace stumbled back half a step, her eyes darting. But she still held her ground, voice sharp with denial."Thorne, stop with this nonsense! 'A world that didn't belong to you'—you're just some small-town kid who makes up wild stories for attention!""Fred's diagnosis is real. The doctors said it's critical. Why can't you just accept that?""And don't forget—I took you in. I fed you. I gave you a life."Every word hit like a sledgehammer against whatever warmth I had left.Ten years of devotion. Ten years of sacrifice. In her mouth, it was nothing but charity handed down from on high.Fred tugged at Grace's sleeve, his voice dripping with manufactured tenderness. "Don't be mad, sweetheart. Thorne's just upset he's losing you. We'll talk it out when we get back from Hawaii."His words were framed as comfort—but they cut deeper than any insult.I stopped talking. I tucked the last piece of luggage in place, zipped the suitcase shut, and stepped back."There. All packed. You won't miss yo

Chapter 5

My pack and I ran through the darkness in wolf form—buildings flashing past, human noise fading, every street corner and café we'd ever shared blurring into streaks of light. Slowly, the traffic sounds died. Wind took over, wild and raw, carrying distant howls from somewhere deep in the territory. When I finally stopped, my paws weren't on polished tile anymore. They sank into damp, warm earth.Up ahead, a cluster of wolves in stitched hides gathered around a fire, singing old pack hymns and dancing in wide, careless circles. Familiar and foreign all at once. The pack member beside me dipped his head in respect. "Young Alpha. I've fulfilled my task. Please—go see the elders. Everyone's been waiting for you."Ten years.I was really back. And I wasn't in a pressed suit anymore. I was fur and fangs and bone—the wolf I'd been before I left, my tawny coat rippling under moonlight that answered every strand. This was the shape I'd worn as a youth, before I ever stepped into the human world.

And thousands of miles away, in Hawaii.Grace leaned against the window of their oceanfront hotel, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass absently. The hot cocoa inside had gone cold—much like the strange, heavy weight settling in her chest.Outside, the sky was impossibly blue. Golden sand. Laughing tourists. A picture-perfect postcard. This was Hawaii. The place Thorne had talked about endlessly—the dream he'd painted for their wedding, the promise he'd made that they'd come here together."Darling? You okay?"Fred walked over with a fresh cup of coffee and settled beside her. He reached for her shoulder—but she pulled back, just slightly, without thinking. His smile flickered for half a second before he masked it with that familiar sickly look. A light cough. "Is the sun too bright? If you're tired, we can head back to the room and rest."Grace shook her head, still staring out the window. Her voice came out distant. "No... it's just... this doesn't feel how I expected.""Expected

Chapter 7

Once, they sat at a beachside café. At the next table, a young couple murmured softly to each other—the guy peeling lotus seeds for his girl with careful fingers, saying in a low, tender voice:"When we get back, let's finally have that wedding we planned. Then we'll go wherever you want for the honeymoon, okay?"The girl nodded, her eyes bright with stars. It reminded Grace of herself once. Of Thorne looking at her the exact same way.Her heart clenched. The teacup nearly slipped from her fingers. She remembered Thorne doing the same—gentle, attentive, planning. The Hawaii itinerary he'd secretly saved. The dates he'd marked on the calendar. The way he'd said, "Once we're settled, we'll go to Hawaii for a while. Walk barefoot on the beach, feel the ocean breeze."Back then, she'd dismissed it as idle talk. Thought he was being childish, spinning fantasies. But now—looking back—every word he'd said came wrapped in genuine hope. And she'd crushed it with her own hands."Grace? Sweethear

"No... no, he wouldn't really leave me..."Grace's voice shook, raw with panic and denial. "He said he'd always stay with me. He said I was his only family in this world..."She burst out of the room like a woman possessed, found Fred, grabbed his arm with desperate fingers. "Fred—tell me—where did Thorne go? Did he really leave? Is any of it true—about him being from some original wolf pack?"Fred flinched at her intensity, the blood draining from his face. He averted his eyes, stammering. "H-honey... why are you asking this all of a sudden? Thorne just stormed off—that's all. That stuff he said, it can't be real. Don't take it seriously.""Not real?" Grace locked her gaze on him, voice dropping to a cold whisper. "Then why did he vanish? Why won't his phone connect? Why won't WhatsApp go through? Why are none of his things left behind?"Fred opened his mouth, shut it, then coughed into his fist—that practiced, familiar cough—and clutched his chest with a pained expression. "Honey, I.

That night, Grace didn't sleep a single hour.By dawn, she'd already left Hawaii and rushed back to their home. Some part of her still clung to hope—that Thorne was just giving her the silent treatment, teaching her a lesson. That he'd be waiting there. That everything could still be fixed. But the moment she opened the door, that hope shattered. The apartment was dark, cold, empty. No trace of life. She flicked on the lights and saw nothing but bare rooms. In the guest room, Thorne's blankets were folded neatly, the bed crisp and untouched. His clothes, his toiletries—gone. Not a single item left behind. In the study, the books he'd treasured—the old manuscripts, the notes, the texts on farming and irrigation—sat arranged in perfect order, gathering dust. Cold. Silent.Like he'd never existed in this home at all.Panic hit like a wave. She tore through every room, every corner, desperate for any trace of him—a note, a number, a clue. Anything. She searched again. And again.Nothing.H

Chapter 10

Another sunny day in Hawaii. Grace came back alone. She wore the dress Thorne had once complimented, walked the shore they'd once planned to walk together, watched the waves roll in and the couples stroll past—and the tears came silently, without warning. She found a beachfront café, ordered the hot cocoa Thorne used to drink, sat by the window, and stared at the sand."Thorne... Hawaii is beautiful. Just like you said. But without you here, all this beauty means nothing.""I know I was wrong. I know that now. If you could just come back, I'd give everything—everything—to earn your forgiveness. I'd go anywhere with you. I'd follow you to your homeland. I'd protect your pack beside you. I'd stay with you forever. Never let you go again.""But I know that's just a fantasy. You're already gone. You've left this world—and you left me behind.""Thorne... I miss you. So much it hurts."The waves crashed against the sand. Her vision blurred with tears.---Meanwhile, back in the pack territor
