Chapter 1

"Molly, your turn." Reese winked at her. "You're the one who just beat me three rounds in a row."Molly laughed. Light, easy, girlish. She hadn't laughed like that around me in a long time.Molly tilted her head, thinking. "I have the most loyal fiancé."She turned to me with a half-smile. "Boring and dull."The atmosphere in the private room went cold.Everyone looked my way, some with concern, others with barely concealed mockery. But I just sat quietly beside Molly, gently swirling the wine in my glass.Reese seemed completely oblivious to the tension. He clinked his glass against Molly's. "Does something that obvious even need saying? Molly, you're not even taking this game seriously!"Reese leaned forward, the collar of his white shirt falling open to reveal a strip of honey-gold skin."Let me show you how this game is supposed to be played."His voice dropped, intimate and deliberate. "In this room sits someone I can't have."Reese paused, his gaze drifting toward Molly, casually

Chapter 2

At the far end of the hallway, by the floor-to-ceiling windows, Reese and I both stopped."Davis, you okay? You know Molly and I run the law firm together. We see each other a lot. Don't read too much into it.""Read too much into what? The someone you can't have, or the rose island?" I said flatly."Everything Molly said is true." He stepped closer. "You're just a regular employee at the Winchester Group. You don't have access to the upper circles, so you don't understand what a woman like Molly needs."Reese was smiling, but every word was ice. "She doesn't want some dull, lovesick puppy. She wants a knight, someone romantic and exciting."You should work on that. Stop being so rigid. Boring and dull."As he said all this, there was a knowing look in his eyes.He always did this, offering advice that sounded genuine on the surface. He'd told me the color scheme of our new apartment was too dreary and oppressive. By the time I came back from a business trip, all the walls had been rep

Chapter 3

I went back to the apartment alone, without turning on the lights.Moonlight spilled in, falling across the massive wedding portrait in the living room.In the photo, I was the only one smiling, while Molly just stood beside me, expressionless, her arm hooked through mine.So it had already gone wrong back then.I'd just chosen to ignore it."Davis, you actually left?" Molly pushed through the door, brows furrowed. "Do you know how rude that was! Reese has been running around helping with our wedding, and you just left him sitting there?"I didn't respond. I got up and walked into the living room. This place used to be decorated in the minimalist style I loved. But now...The couch was draped with the glossy silk cushions Reese liked. The coffee table held one of Reese's limited-edition sports car models.Even the scented candle had been changed, from the cool mint I preferred to the cloyingly sweet tuberose that clung to Reese. My gaze finally settled on the wedding dress in the cente

Chapter 4

Over the next few days, I began packing, removing every trace of myself, along with my heart.Meanwhile, Molly sat in the living room video-calling Reese, her laughter flirtatious and sweet."Davis finally got rid of that ugly ornament." Molly held up her phone, grinning at the empty space where my things had been.Reese's smug laughter came through the speaker. "Davis really does do as he's told. From now on, don't even bother asking him. Just do it."I didn't react. I turned and went upstairs. That evening, Molly brought Reese home. Her excuse was that his apartment was being renovated and he had nowhere to stay. The second Reese walked in, he casually tossed his jacket onto the armchair where I always sat."Just crashing for one night. You don't mind, right?"I acted like I hadn't seen him and went upstairs to the study. The study was dark, lit only by the glow of the computer screen.I pulled up the security cameras. The screen split into multiple feeds. In the living room, Molly s

Chapter 5

The car was dark, lit only by the faint glow of the dashboard reflecting off my expressionless face.I closed my eyes. Exhaustion crashed over me like a tide."Send word. Destroy every piece of documentation tied to the Davis Smith identity."The car headed toward the Winchester Family estate on Long Island. My phone buzzed relentlessly in my pocket.I pulled it out. The screen showed Molly's name, followed by a string of missed calls. There was also a voice message from Reese.I played it. His voice was a furious, sputtering mess of curses, threaded with whimpers from the pain in his wrist.I tossed the phone aside. The butler was already waiting at the door. He bowed respectfully. "Sir."I walked into the study and stood before the massive floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out at the dark, churning sea.The phone buzzed again. This time, a text. From Molly.[Davis, have you lost your mind? Do you have any idea what you've done?!][Reese's wrist is broken! Get back here and apologize to

Chapter 6

The next morning, Greene knocked and entered the study."Sir, we've discovered that Ms. Prescott has been transferring money to Reese's private accounts over the past three months."I glanced at what Greene handed me.Over the past ninety days, Molly had siphoned more than four million dollars through the card linked to my account. And that money had been routed through a chain of accounts and funneled to Reese under one pretext or another.Seeing those numbers, I suddenly recalled something. Early in our relationship, Molly's credit card had been lost and reissued, and she'd asked me to pick up the replacement from the bank.At the time, I'd felt bad that she could only qualify for a basic premium card, so I'd quietly linked it to my account.I never imagined she'd use it to shower money on Reese without a second thought.I handed the documents back to Greene, my voice flat. "Unlink her card from my account.""I'm curious to see how romantic they can be once the money's gone."Greene

Chapter 7

Molly drove through the city all day, searching like a woman possessed. She was horrified to discover that every trace of Davis Smith had been scrubbed clean. The tide of fear finally swallowed her whole.Every place that held a memory of them had become cold and unfamiliar. As the sky darkened, one last place came to mind. The Winchester Family estate. If Davis had truly been hiding his identity, then he was the master of that estate. She was standing at the iron gate when I happened to step out of my car."Davis! It really is you!"I stood on the steps inside the gate, looking down at her.She was covered in dust, her hair tangled, her eyes swollen, tears and mascara streaked across her face."You have the wrong person," I said evenly."No, I don't!" She grabbed the gate with both hands, knuckles white. "You are Davis! Your eyes, your voice, that scar above your left eyebrow. How could I possibly be wrong!""Davis Smith has vanished from this world," I said flatly."So you are Rhodes

Chapter 8

Molly sat outside the gate all night. It never opened again. At dawn, she dragged her stiff body back to the apartment. The moment she pushed open the door, the living room was a wreck. The coffee table was overturned. Reese was standing at her vanity, dumping the contents of every drawer, jewelry piece by piece, onto the floor."What are you doing?" Molly's voice was raw, like sandpaper scraping across stone.Reese didn't even turn around. His left hand was still in a cast, but his right hand deftly snatched up a diamond necklace and stuffed it into his pocket. "What does it look like? Packing up anything valuable.""You've lost it!" Molly lunged to stop him. "Those are mine!""Yours?" Reese finally turned around, and the face that had once made her heart race was now twisted beyond recognition."What's yours is mine, isn't it? You said it yourself, Molly. You'd give me anything."Thanks to that fiancé of yours, all three of my law firms had their licenses revoked."The tax audit was

Chapter 9

Molly sat in the apartment for three days. In those three days, no one came. She'd fallen from the top so fast that even the people who'd once orbited her hadn't bothered to pretend they cared. On the morning of the fourth day, the doorbell rang. She stumbled to the door. Two uniformed officers stood outside."Ms. Prescott." One of them showed his badge. "You are under formal investigation for suspected commercial fraud and facilitating money laundering."A thick stack of documents was spread before her.Every page bore her signature. Every transaction had a timestamp she'd confirmed.Molly opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out."Ms. Prescott, over the past three months, you transferred four million, one hundred and seventy thousand dollars from an account linked to the Winchester Group. Those funds ultimately ended up in Reese Castle's personal accounts. Can you explain this?"Molly's lips moved. "I didn't know, I didn't know that was the Winchester Group's money... I though
