Chapter 1

The rescue team finally reached me.The hydraulic spreader screamed against the crushed door. A paramedic fitted an oxygen mask over my face while another braced my neck and asked how far along I was and whether I had any allergies."Thirty weeks." I caught her wrist with both hands. "Please, save the baby first."She leaned out of the wreck. "Is the patient's mate here? We need her prenatal history!"Kieran stood less than twenty feet away.Vivienne was folded against his chest, trembling so hard her teeth chattered. A thin cut marked her temple, and her wolf flashed in and out of her eyes. Damon had died in an overturned car three years earlier. Since then, sirens and the smell of gasoline had sent her into panic attacks.Kieran covered her eyes with one hand and coached her through every breath. He didn't react when the paramedic called for him a second time.I dragged off my oxygen mask and screamed his name.He looked at me. For one second, his eyes met mine through the fractured

I checked myself out four days after surgery.Kieran didn't come. He sent a driver with an oversized wool coat and a note.[There's trouble along the northern border. I'll be home as soon as I've handled it. Don't be mad. Get some rest.]He didn't even know I no longer needed maternity clothes.Naomi drove me back to the Alpha House. The second I stepped into the living room, Vivienne's cedar perfume hit me.Her suitcases stood at the foot of the stairs. A bottle of anti-anxiety medication sat on the coffee table, and a pale gray jacket that wasn't mine had been tossed across the sofa. The housekeeper came forward, twisting her hands. "Ms. Vivienne said the lakeside villa reminds her of the crash. Mrs. Blackwood invited her to stay here for a while, and the Alpha agreed.""Which room is she using?"The housekeeper's silence was answer enough.I climbed to the second floor and opened the main bedroom door. Vivienne was sitting at my vanity in my navy silk robe, arranging her skincare in

Kieran missed my follow-up appointment too.Halfway through the examination, his voice brushed my mind through our private mindlink.[How are you feeling? Vivienne's having another episode, but I'll check on you later.]It was faint and distracted, as though he'd called from the far end of a tunnel. I shut him out without answering. The doctor checked my incision and told me to avoid strenuous activity for at least six weeks. She also recommended grief counseling. When she asked why my baby's father hadn't come, Naomi gave a humorless laugh from the chair beside me."He's taking care of someone with a scratch on her forehead."The doctor let the subject drop.On our way home, I stopped at a custom art studio. Four days later, the artist handed me a clear resin night-light. Inside it, she had sealed my son's final ultrasound and a copy of the tiny footprint card the hospital had given me.The wooden base carried the name I'd chosen for him: Little Star.I locked the light in a drawer in

Chapter 4

The next morning, I found the study drawer open. The resin night-light lay shattered in the recycling bin. Cracks split the ultrasound into jagged pieces, and the footprint card had been dropped into cleaning solution until the ink began to bleed.Vivienne stood in the doorway, white-faced and wide-eyed. "I didn't mean to do it. I came in looking for my mood journal, and when I saw something from the hospital, my wolf took over. By the time I came to, the light was on the floor."I picked up the wooden base. A sharp edge of resin cut my fingertip, and a drop of blood landed across the words Little Star."The drawer was locked."Tears filled her eyes on cue. "Maybe one of the housekeepers forgot to lock it. I know you've been emotional since the crash, Aria, but you can't blame me for everything."Margaret hurried in at the sound of her voice and immediately stepped between us."It's only a lamp. Have another one made. You know Vivienne has PTSD, so why would you keep something like tha

Silence filled the entryway. In the hospital, I'd imagined this moment over and over, and I'd always thought I would scream at him or demand to know why it had taken him so long to notice. Now that he was standing in front of me, I was simply exhausted."Our pup is gone. The crash caused a placental abruption. He didn't survive the surgery."Kieran recoiled as though I'd struck him. "No. Vivienne said the rescue crew checked you and the baby. She said you only needed observation.""They said I had stable vital signs. That's all."I pulled the hospital contact report from my bag and put it in his hands. "The hospital called seventeen times. Naomi called nine. The ER, the operating room, and intensive care are all listed. You didn't answer once."His eyes moved over the two pages, and his breathing turned rough. He looked at Vivienne. "You had my phone."She backed away. "You asked me to hold it. I was drugged and confused, and it wouldn't stop ringing. I thought it was pack business, so

Chapter 6

During my first month back at work, I audited twelve small businesses. One of my coworkers joked that I checked everything twice, including forty-dollar reimbursements and coffee receipts. I told him old habits died hard. The truth was that I couldn't let myself slow down. Whenever the office went quiet, I saw the cold numbers on Little Star's footprint card, or Kieran's face when he asked where our baby was.I refused to build my new life around old memories, so I filled every hour I could.Vivienne showed up at the cafe beneath our office one afternoon. Her camel coat fit perfectly, her makeup was flawless, and her stride was steady. There was no sign of the fragile woman who supposedly needed someone within arm's reach at all times. She sat across from me and slid a folder over the table. "These are Damon's photographs and some of his old letters. I'll leave Blackpine territory, and I'll give up the room at the Alpha House. Will you withdraw the recovery claim?""No.""Kieran gave m

Seven people were waiting outside the firm the next morning.Three were distant Blackwood relatives. Two were online personalities holding their phones out for a live stream, and the last two had once worked with Vivienne at the pack charity. The man in front blocked the glass doors with a sign that read GIVE THE WIDOW BACK HER MONEY.The moment I approached, he pointed at me and raised his voice for the cameras. "There she is. She used her access to fake an audit and drive Blackpine's former Luna out with nothing."I swiped my key card, but he stepped across the entrance. "Move.""Not until you apologize to Vivienne.""You're trespassing. Get out of the way.""Nobody works in this building today until you tell the truth."Naomi appeared on the other side of the doors with her phone raised. "The police are already on their way. Everything you're saying and doing is being recorded by the building's security system."One of the streamers shoved her camera so close that I could see my ref

The pack council finished its investigation a week later.Vivienne lost every privilege she had retained as Blackpine's former Luna. She was barred from the pack trust and forbidden to use the charity's name. Evidence of misappropriation, fraudulent fundraising, and organized harassment went to the police. She was ordered to leave Blackpine territory and stay away from my home and workplace while the cases were pending.Margaret called me herself for the first time since I left."Aria, I didn't know the baby was gone. I didn't know Vivienne had sent the nursery things to her cousin. If I'd understood what that light was, I never would've said those things.""You knew it belonged to me. You knew it had been locked away."She was silent, and I gave her the only answer she deserved. "My child didn't have to be dead for you to respect me."I ended the call and had my attorney handle her number too.Kieran waited outside the firm for two days. On the third, I agreed to give him ten minutes

The civil divorce and the dissolution of our mate bond were scheduled for the same day. That morning, the court approved the division of property. Everything I had owned before the marriage was returned to me, and the marital assets were split under state law. The money Vivienne had to repay would be handled in a separate case.Kieran offered me a larger share. I refused.I wanted a clean accounting, not guilt money. I wasn't going to let him believe a bigger check could erase an operating room, a shattered memorial, or four years of being treated as an afterthought. In the afternoon, we entered Blackpine's council chamber. There was no moonlit altar and no ancient relic waiting between us. A modern pack required only the presence of both mates, council witnesses, and a clear rejection followed by a clear acceptance.Kieran stood opposite me in the black suit he wore for official Alpha business. He watched me for so long that it seemed he wanted to stretch these last few minutes into a
