Chapter 1

When I brought up my resignation before the holidays, HR Director Rachel Davis brushed it off."Oh, that," she said, her tone completely unbothered. "I saw your resignation letter, and Mr. Howell saw it too. But you know how busy things get before the holidays."We just didn't have time to talk about it properly. Now that the holidays are over, why don't we sit down and have a real chat?"I narrowed my eyes. "Talk about what?"I had already handed in my notice and cleared my desk. As far as I was concerned, there was nothing left to discuss."Talk terms, of course!" Rachel said smoothly. "Mr. Howell said he'd give you a $500 monthly raise. With the economy being what it is right now, what other company is going to give you a raise like that? Do the math. That's an extra 6,000 dollars a year."I couldn't help but run the numbers in my head. The slackers in our department, who clocked out on the dot every day and had never actually finished a single project from start to finish, r

"I understand, Rachel," I said, my voice calm. "However, I resigned before the holidays, and all the paperwork went through standard procedures.""Oh, Camille, why are you being so stubborn? Listen to me..." Rachel tried again."Look," I cut her off. "For seven years, I never missed a single day of work, never took a day off, and never turned down overtime. I pulled my weight for this firm. If you need help with the handover, I'm willing to assist, but other than that, don't call me again.""Camille!" Her voice piped up sharply in frustration. "What kind of attitude is that? I'm calling you in good faith, and you're throwing it right back in my face?"I hung up on her right then and there, refusing to let my toxic former co-worker ruin my good mood on my first day joining the new firm.Yet my phone didn't stay quiet for five minutes before it started buzzing again. This time, it was a FaceTime audio call from my former subordinate, Eliza Hale, the very person who had stolen my Emp

I walked through the front doors of the Marora Group headquarters. The receptionist recognized me and greeted me with a warm smile. "Morning, Camille! Mr. Irwin is waiting for you in his office."Mark's office sat at the end of the hall, the door propped open. He was studying something on his computer. At the sound of my knock, he raised his head and smiled. "Camille! Good to see you. Have a seat."I sat down across from him, and he immediately got down to business. "I want to run something with you."I straightened up in my chair. "I'm listening.""Remember that project from before the holidays? The eight-million-dollar account with your old firm?" he asked. That was the very project I had pulled countless all-nighters for and revised endlessly, only for Eliza to walk up on stage and claim the prize.Mark continued, "It's time for the final sign-off and audit. I thought about sending someone else, but then I realized you managed that account from start to finish."Nobody know

I looked at her with a cold smirk, saying nothing, but my silence only fueled her arrogance."What's the matter?" Rachel snorted. "Playing meek and mild now? What happened to that big attitude you had on the phone earlier?"Her eyes darted down to my chest before she let out a loud scoff."And what is this? What's the deal with this badge? Our lanyards aren't this color. Camille, did you walk into the wrong building? Or..."Her eyes lit up with sudden mock enlightenment, and her laugh grew even louder."Or did you take a job at DoorDash? Isn't a blue lanyard what all those delivery workers wear? Hahaha!"Because my badge was flipped backward, none of them could see the company name printed on the front. Before I could respond, Eliza's voice piped up from down the hall."Camille, you're finally here!"She rushed over, stepping in front of me. "Come on, haven't you thrown enough of a temper tantrum by now? Hurry up and wrap up the loose ends. Our contacts from the client firm are

Then a snicker came from the side. Eliza covered her mouth, laughing so hard that tears formed in the corners of her eyes."Camille, that's a good one." She looked at me with a knowing expression. "For a second there, I actually thought you'd been hired by the Marora Group. That's hilarious."After patting her chest in exaggerated relief, she turned to Gregory and said, "Mr. Howell, she is just messing with you."Gregory stared at her blankly, still trying to make sense of the situation, while Eliza pointed at the badge hanging around my neck and burst out laughing again."Camille, where did you even get a fake badge printed? The quality is ridiculously bad. And isn't that photo from last year's holiday party? You haven't even changed your hairstyle, and you actually put 'Project Director' on it?"She grabbed the edge of a nearby cubicle divider as she laughed. "Oh man, this is wild! First you throw a fit about quitting, then you block everyone, and now you've come back with a fak

Gregory yanked out his phone and stabbed his fingers onto the screen, still seething."Project Director? You actually think you're qualified for that title? You've worked here for seven years. You think I don't know what you're capable of?"Are they blind enough to pick up someone like you? Don't make me laugh."Eliza continued to fan the flames. "Mr. Howell, don't get so worked up. Camille probably got carried away and just wanted to vent. You don't have to make the call. Let her save a little face."Then she turned to me and gave me an exaggerated wink."Camille, hurry up and apologize," she whispered with feigned urgency. "What are you waiting for? Just say something nice. Once Mr. Howell makes that call, you're finished."I remained detached the entire time. "Go ahead and call him. It will save me the trouble of explaining myself."Gregory paused, clearly surprised that I wasn't showing the slightest sign of fear, but Eliza laughed it off. "Oh, Camille, you're really good at

"This is all your fault!"Gregory rounded on Eliza, his face twisted with rage. "You and your senseless drama! If you hadn't stirred up all this trouble over a fake badge, would we be in this mess right now?"He jabbed a finger right at Eliza's nose. "Who the hell do you think you are? Camille is completely out of your league. How dare you point fingers at her and yell at her? Have you lost your mind?"Eliza clutched her burning cheek, tears spilling down her face."Mr. Howell... I didn't mean to... I really didn't know..." she sobbed."You didn't know?" Gregory growled. "Then why did you keep running your mouth? You mocked her and made a fool of yourself in front of everyone. She spent years mentoring you, and this is how you repay her? You ungrateful backstabber!"Before he could lay into Eliza further, Rachel finally recovered from her shock and hurried over to me."Camille, I am so sorry!" she said, bowing in fear. "I was stupid and misjudged the situation. Please, don't hol

"Mr. Howell, let me cut straight to the chase."I pulled out my phone, opened the project documents, and placed the screen where he could see it."This is the project timeline. As of today, you've reached the contractual deadline. Under the terms of our agreement, late delivery carries a penalty of 0.5 percent of the total contract value for every day you're overdue."The color drained from Gregory's face. "Well, we...""If I remember correctly, the contract is worth eight million dollars," I continued calmly. "Half a percent of that is 40,000 dollars a day.""It's not that we haven't finished," he explained desperately. "We're basically done. It's just..."His hands began to tremble, sweat beading across his forehead. I pulled back my phone and waited for him to continue. After a moment, he leaned forward anxiously. "Could you give us a little more time? Just a couple of days. I swear we'll have everything delivered by Thursday."His words rushed out in a panicked frenzy."I'

I remembered my first day at Gregory's company seven years ago. The sunlight had looked almost exactly like this.Back then, I'd been full of hope and commitment. "I've finally landed a real job. I'll work hard and earn every penny."My phone buzzed again, interrupting my thoughts. It was a message from Gregory.[Camille, you think you've won? You'd better watch your back.]I stared at the screen, took a screenshot, and saved it before forwarding the message to Mark.A minute later, he sent back a thumbs-up emoji. Two minutes after that, another message came through.Mark: [Our legal team is already handling it. We'll collect every penny of the liquidated damages we're owed.]I replied: [Got it.]I blocked Gregory's number for good and thought back to what Mark had told me the day before. "Without you, they're nothing."I hadn't been ready to believe that then. Now I did.It didn't take long for the news to spread that Gregory's company had entered bankruptcy proceedings.

Gregory dragged me toward a narrow alley branching off the main road. I knew that once he got me into that darkness, I might never make it back out."Help!"I managed to scream once before he clamped a hand over my mouth and locked his arm around my throat."Scream again and see what happens!" he hissed, his voice cold and threatening. He looked almost triumphant, like a predator that had finally cornered its prey. I fought desperately, but he was much stronger and forced me farther into the alley. It turned out to be a dark, deserted dead end. He slammed me against the brick wall at the back before releasing his hold and pulling a utility knife from his jacket."My wife was keeping another man on the side and waiting for an excuse to leave me. The second my company went under, she used it to force a divorce and throw me out."His voice grew increasingly agitated as he paced in front of me."And Eliza? That ungrateful bitch. I supported her for three years and handed her some o
