The morning after I closed the distance the air itself felt different.I woke before the thin winter light had fully claimed the room and lay still for a long time, listening to the quiet. The decision from the night before sat in my chest like a second heartbeat—steady, insistent, impossible to ignore. I had crossed the space I had spent weeks defending. I had put my hand on his coat and admitted I was tired of starving. Nothing about the hate had disappeared. Nothing about the fear had lessened. But the running had stopped, and in its place was something heavier and more dangerous: the obligation to stand still and feel everything at once.I dressed with more care than usual. Not for him. For myself. The hoodie still went on last, the zipper pulled high, but the armor felt less like protection and more like a habit I had not yet decided how to break. Outside the snow had frozen into a hard, glittering sheet that reflected the early light in sharp fragments. I walked the long route o

The agreement held through the next two days like thin ice under too much weight. We skated early. We shared the ice in a silence that no longer felt like starvation. When the hate rose high enough during drills that my hands shook inside my gloves, I did not vanish. I found him after the final whistle, stood in the corridor outside the locker rooms, and said the truth out loud even when it tasted like metal. He listened without defending himself. He did not try to fix it. He simply absorbed whatever I threw and remained exactly where he was—present, patient, costly. The team had started to notice. Not the full shape of it. Not the history or the claim or the night against the glass. But the way Damian’s eyes found me across the neutral zone and held. The way I no longer cut wide to avoid him in the slot. The way we left the building at the same time more often than not, walking the first stretch of path together before the routes diverged. Nothing overt. Nothing that could be named i

The week of the pajama game arrived like a slow-moving natural disaster the entire roster had voted for and immediately regretted.By Tuesday the group chat had fractured into three hostile factions: the people who had already ordered matching onesies and wanted coordination, the people who believed individuality was sacred even in humiliation, and Miller, who had somehow acquired a full adult-sized dinosaur costume with a working tail and was refusing to elaborate on the cost. Damian muted the chat after the forty-seventh message about whether the dinosaur counted as “regrettable childhood” or “active cry for help.” I know this because he showed me the screenshot that night at his apartment, jaw tight, eyes flat with the particular exhaustion of a captain who had survived road trips and overtime losses only to be defeated by a Google Form.“I’m going to transfer,” he said, dropping his phone on the table like it might bite. “I’m going to change my name and move to a country that does

The final game of the road trip started like a punishment and ended like a stay of execution. We were down by two after the first period. The building was loud in the way only opposing barns got loud—every hit cheered, every missed call a personal insult, every one of our passes greeted with the kind of sustained booing that made the boards vibrate. Coach looked like he was calculating the fastest route to early retirement. Miller had already broken a stick and tried to argue with the referee using interpretive gestures. Damian had won six of seven face-offs and looked personally offended by the seventh.I played like the ice owed me money.Every shift was a negotiation with gravity and bad decisions. I took a high stick in the second that the officials missed and answered it with a clean but vicious board battle that left their defenseman sitting on the ice wondering how his feet had stopped working. On the bench Damian’s glove bumped my shoulder once—quick, professional, nothing any

The first time Damian touched me on purpose, it was not dramatic. It happened in the kitchen of his apartment on a Thursday night while the kettle boiled and the residual smell of rain still clung to both of our coats. I had been reaching for a second mug. He had been reaching for the same cabinet. Our hands arrived at the same moment, and instead of pulling back the way he had for weeks, he simply adjusted—fingers brushing the side of mine, steady and warm, and then staying there long enough for the contact to become a decision instead of an accident.I did not pull away either. The kettle clicked off. Neither of us moved for the tea. The only sound was the low tick of the cooling element and the quieter sound of my pulse trying to climb out of my throat. Damian’s eyes stayed on our hands. His voice, when it came, was rough around the edges.“Still okay.”“Still okay,” I answered, and was surprised to find that it was true.He let his fingers slide away first, giving me the exit with
