Chapter 1

“You want to go to Starfall Valley?” Stanley didn’t even look up.He sat on the sofa, casually cleaning his dagger. It was my forty-fifth birthday. But there was nothing to celebrate in this luxury mansion, the heart of the Darkhollow pack.I was the Luna in name only. Lower than the lowest Omega. My only purpose now was to cook dinner for the family.I had no place here.“You promised me. Over twenty years ago, when we ran away.” I stood in the middle of the living room, my hands twisting the fabric of my apron. “You said when the pack was strong, you’d take me to the sacred spring. For our bonding ceremony.”Stanley stopped cleaning the blade. He let out a short, harsh laugh. He looked up, his Alpha eyes sweeping over me with pure disgust.“A bonding ceremony?” He slammed the dagger on the table. His voice dripped with contempt. “Millie, your wolf is dead. Tell me, can you even hold your form for half an hour anymore?”My breath hitched. My nails dug into my palms.“Our pack rules th

The next evening, the entire Darkhollow estate was lit up, buzzing with energy for the annual Moon Festival.I stood in the shadows of the staircase, a ghost in my own home.Stanley came down from upstairs. He was wearing an expensive, custom-tailored black suit. An obsidian stone, the symbol of his Alpha power, was fastened at his collar. He looked handsome, powerful, and untouchable.“Kids, time to go,” Stanley’s deep Alpha voice announced. The twins ran to him, giddy with excitement.“Listen,” Stanley said, ruffling their hair. “Selene has booked the entire Moonlight Hall for us. Tonight, we make her the center of attention.”The boys let out excited howls.Zane followed last, dressed in a sharp tuxedo. He didn’t even glance my way.The front door opened, letting in a blast of cold air.My family paraded out.Not a single one of them asked if I wanted to come. They just assumed I’d stay here. Waiting for them. Like a piece of rusty furniture. The door slammed shut with a loud bang.

Before dawn, under the faint light of a dying moon, I stopped heaving. I stopped crying.I got up. I walked into the kitchen like I always did and started preparing their breakfast of raw venison.Footsteps sounded behind me.Selene walked in. She was wearing Stanley’s oversized white shirt, the hem barely covering her thighs. She deliberately swept her hair back, showing off the fresh, angry bite marks covering her neck and collarbones.“Millie, make me a latte. The human kind,” she ordered, leaning against the doorframe.I ignored her and kept slicing the meat.Stanley, fresh from a shower, walked in just then.He didn't even look at me. He shoved aside the raw meat platter I’d just finished.“Who eats this raw crap? It’s disgusting.” The plate clattered on the counter, splashing blood everywhere. He turned to the basket of expensive exotic berries Selene had brought. “See, Selene? You get me. This is real food.”Later that morning, the house grew even louder.Zane and his wife, Ivy,

I finally did the one thing I had sworn I would never do.Twenty-seven years ago, I promised my father I would die before I ever set foot in his territory again. But after this betrayal, I was filled with regret.I didn’t want to run and hide in the human world with a fake ID.I wanted to go home. The line went silent. After three long seconds, my father’s voice came through the phone.Tired, but absolute.“Come home, my daughter.” His voice trembled slightly. “Your throne… I’ve kept it for you for twenty-seven years.”Hot tears streamed down my face, washing away the last pathetic traces of weakness in my heart.“Okay.” I bit my lip, swallowing my sobs. “I’m coming home.”The next morning, a frenzied energy filled the mansion as everyone prepared to leave.I stood blankly at the counter.“Ah!”A fake scream cut through the kitchen.Selene had deliberately knocked over the hot tea I’d just poured. The scalding liquid splashed all over her.“Millie! Are you insane?!” she shrieked, backi

Millie’s POVThe wind howled, throwing ice and snow against my face like a thousand tiny knives. The Silver Burn Stanley had given me throbbed with a piercing cold. But I didn't stop. After three days and three nights, I finally stood at the border of the Silvermane territory. The oldest and most feared land on the continent.A massive boundary marker, carved from black stone, stood against the storm. Before the gates stood hundreds of towering, elite warriors. And at the very front stood the most powerful Alpha on the continent. My father, Gideon Silvermane. He wore a heavy black wolf-pelt coat, his aged face a roadmap of brutal battle scars. When he saw me, his piercing golden eyes, the same as my own, trembled.Father strode toward me.The hundreds of warriors around him dropped to one knee in unison, bowing their proud heads.“You’re hurt.” Father’s voice was hoarse. His rough, calloused hand hesitated, hovering over the blackened scar on my cheek. This tyrant, a man who made the e

Stanley’s POVI floored it, the steering wheel shaking in my hands.“Stanley, are you insane?” Selene shrieked, her nails digging into the leather armrest. “You’re going to get us all killed!”I didn’t answer. My chest was still seizing, the feeling of being torn apart still fresh and raw.“What the hell is going on?” Zane demanded from the back seat, his voice laced with annoyance. “You drag us all out of bed in the middle of the night just to race back to that dump?”“Shut up,” I snarled. My voice was so hoarse I barely recognized it.The tires skidded on the snow as the car crashed through the front gates and into the yard.I threw the door open, and silence hit me in the face.No lights. No smell of cooking. No quiet figure hunched in the corner of the kitchen.“Old hag?” Jax yelled, running upstairs and then back down. “She’s not here!”“She’s probably just throwing another tantrum,” Jace said, rolling his eyes. “It’s not like she has anywhere else to go.”I ran straight to the ba

Stanley’s POVSilver burn? The queen was getting revenge for Millie? What was their connection?I yanked my leg free from the scout’s grasp. He flinched.“Say that again,” I said, my voice shaking.“The new… the new queen said the mines were a gift,” the scout stammered, his face pressed to the floor. “And that a much bigger debt is waiting for you to settle at the border.”The room was dead silent.Zane’s face was green. He gripped the edge of the table, his knuckles white.Selene’s wine glass slipped from her fingers and shattered on the floor. My head was ringing.Silver burn. That black, ugly scar on Millie’s face.I didn’t dare think it. I couldn’t let myself. The next morning, our convoy crunched through the snow, driving deep into the North. We had three wagons full of gifts. The best furs, the rarest diamonds, and a black pearl necklace I’d chosen specifically for this mysterious new queen.Zane sat next to me, his face paler than the snow.“Father,” he whispered, “what if… wha

Stanley’s POVThe snow was biting cold. My knees were numb.Millie’s boot was still on my hand, unmoving.“Alpha…” I forced the word out, my throat tight. “Millie, please, listen to me.”She didn’t move her foot.“I was blinded by Selene’s scent.” Tears mixed with ice on my face. I didn’t even know when I’d started crying. “All these years, the only one I ever truly loved was you. I just took you for granted! I thought you’d never leave! I was blind! I was wrong!”She finally lifted her boot.I thought it was a sign of forgiveness. I scrambled to get up, to grab her legs.“Father!” Zane crawled toward us, his own knees slamming on the ice. “Mother, it was my fault! Please, save us, save our family!”The twins rushed forward, snot and tears smearing their faces.“Grandma! We’re sorry!” Jax wailed. “We’ll never say you smell like a Rogue again!”“Please forgive Dad!” Jace sobbed, clinging to my arm.Millie looked at the pathetic, groveling mess we made. Then she laughed. The sound was co

Stanley’s POVBlood was still gurgling in my throat. The tip of her claw was cold against my skin.I was sure I was about to die.But Millie didn’t strike. She retracted her claws, her eyes full of disgust, as if I were a piece of trash not worth dirtying her blade on.“Go home and wait to die,” she said, turning away. Her black armor swept across the snow. “I don’t need to kill you myself. Your own pack will do a much better job with what’s left of you.”She was right.Three days later, the Darkhollow elders held an emergency meeting.I sat in a wheelchair, unable to even shift, my body feeling like it had been hollowed out.“The Alpha can no longer hold his wolf form, and he has provoked the wrath of Silvermane,” an elder announced coldly. “By pack law, he is hereby stripped of his title and banished from the territory!”No one objected.Zane stood at the back of the crowd, his head bowed, silent. Two warriors hauled me to my feet and dragged me out of the gates of the territory I ha
