Chapter 1

By the time the Moretti family found me after I slipped away from the party, Walter, the butler, and I were already getting along like old friends.Walter had clearly decided he liked me."Poppy says she'll help me open a sports bar after I retire," he announced. My mother's expression turned grim. She dragged me to the guest room and locked the door from the outside. There was no television, no radio, and no one else in the room. After three minutes, my skin began to crawl. After five, I called a hotel's customer service line."Thank you for calling. How may I help you?"The moment someone answered, I could breathe again."Nothing urgent. I just wanted to make sure you're having a good day."The representative paused. "Ma'am, are you trying to book a room?""No, but you sound tired. Did you have a difficult customer today?""Ma'am...""Do you have the weekend off? Any plans?"Half an hour later, I knew she owned a dog named Milo. She politely begged me to end the call and give her fi

During the first hour of the Social Silence Protocol, I felt reasonably fine. At least the PA system still talked to me."All eleventh-grade students attending the annual leadership retreat should meet outside the gym by three p.m."I looked up at the speaker. "Copy that. Thank you. You're the only voice on campus that has spoken to me today."Several students lowered their heads, their shoulders shaking as they tried not to laugh. No one dared make a sound.During the second hour, I started a conversation with a vending machine. I fed it five dollars. It gave me one bottle of water and no change."Five dollars for one bottle?" I patted the glass. "Very Moretti of you."The machine remained silent."You're the shy type. I understand."During the third hour, Luca confiscated my phone because I had sent the same message to more than nine hundred contacts.[Hey, are you there?]"This is your idea of cooperation?" he asked. He slipped the phone into his pocket, his face like a storm cloud.

The Blue Trail was quieter than I expected. After twenty minutes, I had not seen another person. I opened the class group chat. No one had shared a location or mentioned where the teams were supposed to meet.I sent a message. [Anyone else on Blue Team, or did I miss the invisibility workshop?]A red exclamation point appeared beside it. [Not Delivered.]I addressed the nearest tree instead. "Excuse me. Do you know which way the campground is?"The tree did not answer."That's fine. You already have better manners than Luca. At least you haven't accused me of begging for attention."Rain began to fall. Within minutes, the rain was pouring. No one had maintained the Blue Trail in years, and wet leaves made the ground slick. I moved forward slowly, holding on to tree trunks for balance.Near a collapsed wire fence, the earth gave way beneath my feet. I had no time to grab anything. Mud flooded my collar as I tumbled down a steep slope. Rocks struck my shoulders and back. Then I crashed t

I sent forty-two calls and messages during the first night. No one responded.By the next morning, my phone battery had dropped to twenty percent. I stopped making calls and sent my location once every hour instead.[Mom, I'm still here.][Luca, the rain stopped, but the water down here keeps rising.][Ms. Carter, I'm not skipping school. I really can't get out.][Bianca, if you're still angry, I'll apologize. Please tell them where I am.]The same notice appeared beneath every message. [Not Delivered.]The protocol placed my number and accounts on a temporary block list. The school and family networks held my messages in quarantine until the seventy-two hours ended. I knew no one could see them yet. I kept sending them anyway. Maybe if I left enough of my voice behind, someone would understand that I had not disappeared on purpose. At noon, the Morettis celebrated Bianca's successful retreat. Mom ordered a cake and invited several friendly school-board members.Mom glanced at the empt

Brakes shrieked outside the mansion. Walter entered with police officers and a rescue coordinator. He threw the faded blue tag, now sealed in an evidence bag, onto the table in front of Bianca."Who put this on her backpack?"Bianca stumbled backward. Luca stepped in front of her on instinct. Before he could speak, an officer's phone rang. He answered and listened. His expression changed."The search team found the source of her last location signal."Everyone looked at him."It's forty-five feet below ground in the old smuggling tunnel.""The life-detection equipment isn't registering a response."Mom caught herself against the edge of the dining table. Her coffee cup slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor.Luca snatched the location map from the officer. "What does forty-five feet underground mean? She fell. She wasn't buried alive."The officer took the map back and slid it into an evidence sleeve. "The old tunnel flooded two days ago, and there has been a secondary collap

When I woke, my hospital room was full. Mom, Don Lorenzo, Luca, the head of St. Augustine, Ms. Carter, and two police officers had arranged themselves around my bed. Anyone walking in would have assumed they were waiting to hold a press conference.Mom moved toward me as soon as I opened my eyes. "Poppy, does your leg hurt?"I looked at her without answering. After several seconds, she tried again. "Are you hungry? I had the kitchen make you some soup."I still said nothing.Luca stood at the foot of the bed in the same wrinkled shirt he had worn the night before. "The doctor said there's nothing wrong with your vocal cords. Stop treating your health like a game."Don Lorenzo warned him to stay away from the bed. "That's enough.""Am I wrong?" Luca's voice rose before he forced it back down. "She's awake. She can hear us. Why won't she answer?"I turned toward the window. Mom faced him. "Luca, leave. If you hadn't invented that ridiculous protocol, none of this would have happened."He

Bianca stopped crying as she watched the footage. Apparently, she had not known that one camera still covered the equipment-room entrance."I switched the marker," she admitted. "But I didn't know the trail would collapse. I only wanted to scare her."The officer asked, "When Ms. Carter noticed the head count was short, why did you say Poppy had gone back to the parking area?""I was afraid I'd get in trouble.""When Walter counted again, why did you say she had left in another vehicle?"Bianca looked at Luca. "She knows everybody. I thought she really had found another ride.""What about the message saying she was trapped underground?"Bianca lowered her head. After a long silence, she said, "I thought she was faking it."Luca spoke. "I taught her to think that way." Everyone turned toward him. "I told people Poppy used illness and disappearing to demand attention. I took Walter's phone and ended the one call she managed to answer. Bianca trusted my judgment."The officer frowned. "Di

Within an hour of the post going live, several students whose information appeared in the notebook contacted me.[Poppy, I saw you take the blue trail. I tried to tell Ms. Carter, but Luca stopped me.][I told you about my family. You didn't investigate me.][I asked you to remember where I keep my EpiPen.][You saved my mother's number because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to talk during an asthma attack.]My child advocate told me not to respond publicly and not to delete anything. She referred the witnesses to the outside attorneys conducting the school investigation. There were not hundreds of useful witnesses. There were only a few, but each had something specific to offer. Ethan confirmed that he had asked me to record the location of his EpiPen. The student who saw me enter Blue Trail submitted a written statement and admitted that he had backed down when Luca interrupted him. The school nurse confirmed that the medical information in the first section of the notebook had been

I transferred to another school. I was not expelled or pressured into leaving. It was my decision. The new school was a boarding school two states away that accepted midyear transfers. I shared a room in an old residence hall with another eleventh-grade girl. The common room at the end of the corridor was almost never quiet. Someone was always watching a movie, making instant ramen, or arguing about whose turn it was to take out the trash. For the first time, I found noise comforting.Mom texted every day.[Did you take your medication?][Does your leg still hurt?][May I visit this weekend?]I answered what was necessary.[Yes.][Not much.][No.]There were no good mornings, no good nights, and nothing extra.Luca did not show up at school. He emailed my child advocate several times and asked whether I would agree to see him. I refused twice. The third time, my therapist asked whether I truly did not want the meeting or whether I was afraid he would become angry if I said no.After th

Six months later, the Outdoor Programs Office at my new school invited me to review its safety procedures. They did not use my story in a fundraising campaign or name the policy after me. The director simply walked me through the check-in system, route assignments, and emergency contacts and asked where a student might still disappear. The final rules were straightforward. Two adults had to complete independent head counts at departure and return. Any change of vehicle required confirmation from both the driver and the supervising teacher. A missing student's disciplinary history could never be used to reduce the urgency of the response. At the bottom of the final page, I wrote: [If the numbers do not match, find the person. Do not find an explanation that makes the wrong number feel reasonable.]My terminal case of social butterfly syndrome never disappeared. I could still learn about a breakup while waiting in the cafeteria line or spend one bus ride helping a driver understand his s
