The Millbrook Free Library sat at the center of a small town two counties north of the city, a modest but handsome Carnegie era building with limestone columns and tall arched windows, the kind of structure Sienna recognized immediately as exactly the sort of quiet, unglamorous architecture that rarely received the attention it deserved until it was nearly too late to save."It's smaller than I expected," Damian said, standing beside her on the library's front steps on a cold February morning, the foundation's first official site visit since Eleanor had identified the project months earlier. "I suppose I'd built up some grander picture in my head, given how much my father's estate is putting behind this foundation.""Small doesn't mean unimportant," Sienna said, running a hand along the building's weathered limestone facade. "This is exactly the kind of building that usually gets overlooked. Not grand enough to attract preservation attention on its own, not central enough to a major c

Corbett Development's response to the foundation's growing involvement arrived faster than either Sienna or Damian had anticipated, a formal letter from the company's legal counsel questioning the foundation's standing to interfere in what the letter characterized as a straightforward municipal real estate transaction between the town council and a private developer."They're trying to box us out before we even reach the town meeting," Renata explained, reviewing the letter with the particular grim focus Sienna had come to associate with genuine legal threats rather than routine correspondence. "This is a warning shot, essentially. They want us to understand they're prepared to escalate if we continue pushing back against their acquisition.""Can they actually block our involvement?" Sienna asked."Not entirely, no. The foundation has every right to make its case publicly at the town meeting, same as any other interested party. But letters like this are designed to create doubt, to ma

The two weeks following the town meeting unfolded in a strange, suspended tension, the foundation's team continuing to build its case while Millbrook's council deliberated behind closed doors, and Sienna found herself, during this waiting period, confronting an entirely separate, more personal question that had been quietly circling in the back of her mind for months."I want to talk to you about something," she told Damian, one evening after Rosalind had finally settled down for the night, both of them sitting together on the couch in the particular exhausted quiet that followed a long day split between opera house obligations and Millbrook's ongoing campaign. "Something that has nothing to do with the library.""Okay," Damian said, giving her his full attention, something in her tone catching his immediate focus."I've been thinking about a second child," Sienna said, the words arriving less smoothly than she'd rehearsed them in her head over the preceding weeks. "Not right this mom

Corbett's lawsuit dragged into its third month before the presiding judge finally signaled, during a preliminary hearing, exactly how the case was likely to resolve, a development that arrived considerably sooner than Renata had initially predicted."The judge all but told them their case is weak," Renata reported, calling Sienna directly from the courthouse. "She specifically questioned Corbett's counsel about the tortious interference claim, and I don't think it went well for them. Public property records are public property records. There's no reasonable legal theory that makes sharing publicly available information into actionable interference.""Does that mean it's over?" Sienna asked."Not officially, not yet. But I'd be very surprised if Corbett doesn't move to settle or withdraw within the next few weeks, now that they understand how the judge is likely to rule if this actually goes to trial. Companies like Corbett don't typically want a public, documented loss on record. It's

Winter arrived early that year, the first snow dusting the city streets a full three weeks ahead of schedule, and Sienna found herself, six months after Millbrook's reopening, sitting in her father's old desk chair reviewing the foundation's year end report with a satisfaction that still occasionally caught her by surprise, given how uncertain everything had felt during those first difficult weeks of the Corbett fight."Two more projects signed this quarter," Damian said, reading over her shoulder, the foundation's expanding portfolio now including a small maritime museum on the coast and a Depression era community hall two states over, both towns having reached out directly after hearing about Millbrook's successful defense. "I don't think either of us imagined, a year ago, quite how quickly this would grow.""I don't think Richard imagined it either," Sienna said. "Though I suspect he'd have found some characteristically understated way to take credit for the growth anyway."Damian
