NATHAN POV“You. Stay.” I pointed at Kiki, making her stop in her tracks. The room emptied, and Kiki remained. She took a seat, staring peacefully into space. That… that was what I needed, not someone asking me countless questions about whether the headlines were true or not.Goddamn, they were, but the last thing I expected from Ferdinand was to put it on national TV.I underestimated him. The news could blow my career in the worst possible ways.My eyes rested on Kiki. She just sat there. I wanted to ask her if she was okay. I had treated her like a stranger since she came to work.My phone suddenly began to ring again.“Shit,” I cursed under my breath, running my hand through my hair.“You should answer the call. Hiding would only make the matter worse.” Kiki spoke calmly.“I am not hiding.”“Yes, you are, Mr. Montgomery. If you aren’t, you’re supposed to have made press release to counter the allegation, but because you know those aren’t just allegations but something you did.”Ki

NATHAN POV “So the allegations about you were true?” Harry asked over a sip of his scotch. I stared at the glass in my hand for a moment before nodding. “It’s Ferdinand—I told you about him before, the grant was suppose to be for him but I pitched something better to the senator’s wife,”Well, just because Harry was my best friend, personal attorney, and someone I wouldn’t lie to, I told him the truth without batting an eyelid. “But why did you do it?” He set his glass down, his brows drawing together. I shrugged. “Ferdinand cooked up a false medical funding pitch to the Senate to get that grant, and what? He wanted to use the funds to buy my company.” “So he is not innocent too. Why not let the press know?” “There’s no point. It could only get worse from there.” I replied. It was evening and the buzz about the news was already contained, and by the next day everyone would forget. Harry leaned back in his seat, slowly nodding his head. We sat in silence as the club music blar

NATHAN POV“The marginal increase is exactly as predicted,” I answered one of the men dressed in a suit in the audience. It was the day of the summit, and I stood in front of about three hundred CEOs, some around my age, others older or younger. It was my third year as a panelist at the annual summit. With degrees and qualifications in economics, I was quite the right fit to lecture others about the topic I’d been assigned to speak about. If only they knew that, despite all the knowledge I’d gathered over the years, my company was experiencing a turnover lower than expected.“How about the marginal loss?” another person in the audience asked.“Very important question.” I snapped my fingers. “Every company runs into losses, and most times, they’re caused by unforeseen situations…”My voice trailed off as memories of the previous night flashed through my mind again. The truth was, I was finding it hard to concentrate because I couldn’t stop thinking about the woman sitting in the audie

NATHAN POVBy evening, when the summit was over, the concierge drove us back to the hotel.Kiki had been strangely absent-minded throughout the ride. She was quiet, occasionally staring at me without saying a word.Whenever I looked back at her, she looked away. She must be upset about seeing Ferdinand at the summit. In my defence, I hadn’t known he would be there either. The door clicked shut as I closed it, and I heaved a tired sigh.I settled on the bed, taking off my wristwatch.“Mr. Montgomery, are you fine?”Kiki’s voice made me look up at her from the other end of the room.I furrowed my brows. “What do you mean?”“How was the summit for you?” she asked, crossing her arms.“Stressful, but I’m glad it’s over.”“Ferdinand mentioned partnering with Sherlock Capital. That’s Fiona’s family, right?”Of course, Kiki had already figured it out.“Yes. The Sherlocks are also partners with my company. They have a profit-sharing agreement. Any problem?”Kiki shrugged. “Nothing. I just need

NATHAN POVThe concierge pushed our travel boxes out of the hotel.Just like that, our work trip was over. I glanced back at the room one last time, at that bed where memories had been made with Kiki.Another memory I wouldn’t forget easily was walking out on Kiki when she’d asked me a question about Fiona.Ever since then, she’d been wearing that serious, I mean business face.Through breakfast, checking out of the hotel and even on the plane back home.I lifted my head from my laptop to look in her direction. Seat 3A, while I was in 3B. The aisle between us was one I wouldn’t dare cross because she was mad at me.She was just three feet away, but I wished she were closer. Maybe a little scared, so I could put my arm around her like I had done the last time.I heaved a sigh, breaking out of my thoughts as I turned my attention back to my laptop. The blinking cursor reminded me of what I’d already started typing.: New RulesI hit the backspace key, completely changing my mind.I type
