The soft northern inquiries did not multiply quickly. For four days after the unsigned note, Rylan’s passive monitoring returned only silence. No second message. No merchant gossip that carried useful detail. No formal approach from any northern ranking family. The attention had shown itself once and then withdrawn into the dark, leaving only the knowledge that someone was measuring Blackthorn’s current shape for openings.Kael disliked the silence more than he would have disliked a clearer threat.“They are waiting to see whether we adjust our pattern,” he said on the fifth morning, standing at the study window with his back to the room. “Any visible increase in security or diplomatic caution will confirm that the questions landed.”“So we make no visible change,” I said.“None. The Stonehollow arrangement proceeds on schedule. The internal rotations remain as they are. The protected evening hours stay protected. We give them nothing to read.”The discipline of that choice settled ov

The second letter from Silverpine arrived without the careful polish of the first. It came in the early afternoon, carried by a direct courier rather than the regular channel. Rylan brought it to the study immediately. The seal was my father’s, but the handwriting on the outer wrapping was less steady than usual. Kael noticed the same detail I did. He handed the letter to me without breaking it.I opened it at the desk. The contents were brief and heavier than the previous exchange. Two of the younger ranking families in Silverpine had begun quietly refusing to contribute their full share of the winter labor quota, claiming that Blackthorn’s continued support made the emergency measures unnecessary. The steward had attempted to correct the shortfall. He had been met with formal politeness and practical noncompliance. My father had called the families in. The meeting had not resolved the issue cleanly. He was requesting a short consultation—not additional staff, not formal intervention

The day of the hearing broke cold and clear over Blackthorn. There was no practical reason for the hours to feel different. The territory continued its ordinary rhythm. The Stonehollow shipment schedule remained on track. Torven’s adjusted structure continued to function without friction. Northmere had produced no further soft inquiries. And yet the knowledge that Silverpine’s ranking circle was assembling to decide whether consequence counted as interference sat under every quiet stretch of the morning like a low, persistent weight.Kael did not pretend the day was ordinary. He cleared his nonessential meetings before midday and remained within easy reach of the study without hovering. The bond carried a steady, contained readiness—present without being intrusive. When I found myself measuring the angle of the light against the estimated timing of the hearing, he said nothing. He simply placed a cup of water near my hand and returned to the report he was reviewing. The courier was no

Northmere’s first formal approach arrived on a gray morning eight days after the Silverpine hearing closed. It did not come as a challenge. It came as an offer. The letter was sealed under the Northmere ranking crest and addressed jointly to the Alpha and Luna of Blackthorn. The language was polished, respectful, and carefully constructed. Alpha Soren of Northmere wrote that his territory had taken note of Blackthorn’s recent stability and the clean handling of external and internal pressures. He proposed a limited winter arrangement: Northmere would provide a shipment of specialized medical stores in exchange for preferential access to Blackthorn’s surplus grain at a favorable rate. The terms were useful. The tone was deferential without being weak. And the closing lines made the subtext clear without stating it—Northmere wished to build a quiet working relationship with the current leadership structure of Blackthorn, and was prepared to be patient and practical in doing so.Kael rea

The first sign that Silverpine’s quiet had been incomplete arrived without a formal letter. It came through a secondary report from the steward Kael had assigned to the support staff—a short, practical note attached to the regular weekly logistics summary. Two junior members of the ranking family that had corrected their labor contribution after the hearing had begun missing scheduled shifts without explanation. The steward had noted the absences, addressed them once through the proper internal channel, and received polite assurances that the matter would be resolved. It had not been resolved. The absences had continued for four more days. The steward did not request intervention. He only flagged the pattern.I read the note twice at the study desk before Kael returned from the training grounds. When he came in, cold air still clinging to his coat, I handed it to him without comment. He read it standing.“They’re testing whether the hearing’s outcome has teeth in ordinary time,” he sa
