Chapter 1

Hearing my retort, Yvie Smith's smile turned stiff as she stared at me blankly for three seconds like she couldn't recognize me.Then, she laughed a shrill laugh that hurt the ears while reaching out to painfully poke me in the chest. "Did you lose your mind, Carl?" she snapped at me as she gave me a once-over. "How dare you talk to me like that! Remember how you gave me your competition spot or that graduate school recommendation just because I pouted? What, does some lousy offer suddenly mean so much to you?"Why don't you look in the mirror first? Dead parents, unable to afford anything… Even if you land a job at Ascendant Group, do you think you can afford a Birkin bag even with a year's salary?"Beside her, Kevin Zims snickered as he pulled out a sheet of paper and slapped it down in front of me.It was an Ascendant Group offer letter, and the recipient's name, Kevin Zims, was clearly written on it."See here?" He reclined against his chair, crossing his legs. "That intervi

But all of that was ending now.Picking up the notice and sliding it back to Kevin, I stood up and looked downward at him. "Kevin Zims, was it? You sure are generous, buying a job offer for five hundred grand. Remember to bring this along when you head to Ascendant Tower tomorrow."Kevin was left stunned for a couple of beats, but he soon slammed his hand on the table and laughed, spilling coffee everywhere."Did you get kicked in the head? Why are you pretending to be a big deal? Look in the mirror first!"He grabbed the offer letter and slapped me across the face with it, its stiff edge scraping painfully against my cheek. Then he planted his foot on top of my sneaker. It was the only decent pair of sneakers I owned and I had kept them even after the heels had worn downYvie, nestling in his arms, shook with laughter. "Carl, did poverty fry your brain? The way you talked… It's as if you own the place! But you see, you're born to be a dog! Don't even think of getting on our lev

Chapter 3

At half past eight in the morning at Ascendant Tower's main entrance, it was rush hour, and many people were filing into the building.I was standing under the tree shade as I checked the evidence gathered yesterday, just as a Bentley loudly screeched to a halt outside the entrance, almost knocking into an intern.Kevin got off first, wearing an ill-fitting suit, while his hair was slicked back until it gleamed. He reached out, helping Yvie out of the car. With her Chanel suit and Birkin bag in hand, she held her head so high that she wasn't looking at the floor. When an intern brushed against her Birkin bag, she leaped backward, scowling in disdain as she patted the surface of the bag and snapped, "Are you blind?! Can you afford this?!"Kevin put a hand around her waist as he kicked the intern. "Go away, bum. You can prostitute yourself, but you'd still be unable to afford my girlfriend's bag."The intern hung his head, teary-eyed as he hurried away, while I fiddled with my pho

As that offer letter fell out of Kevin's hands, a gust of wind abruptly blew it away."No! That's impossible!" he shrieked. "My dad… He paid Mandy five hundred grand! This offer is mine!"He lunged toward me, but the security guards strode forward and subdued him.Yvie reacted fast and let go of Kevin's hand, tears immediately streaming down her face as she reached for me."I'm so sorry, Carl! Kevin made me do it! I love you… Just forgive me, okay? We can start over!"I sidestepped her and whipped out my phone, playing the recording from the day before from yesterday."You're born to be a dog! Don't even think of getting on our level…""I've just withdrawn that money you'd given me for a Birkin bag. You don't have a problem with that, right? Your money is mine anyway."Kevin's voice rang too."I won't lie. The HR director who's going to interview you? My dad has bribed her to hell and back. You can keep crying, but that won't do a thing!""Oh, and by the way, remember that pr

And with those words, I strode into the building, not looking back even as Yvie kept yelling behind me, "Carl! Just listen to me…"Joshua was right beside me, leading me straight to the 58th floor. The entire floor was the board chair's office, with the entire city's skyline visible outside the glass walls and the sunlight a little blinding. After Joshua closed the door and left, I sat behind the desk and opened the document envelope. The first was a copy of the police report.Twenty years ago, my parents' truck overturned after a tire suddenly blew out, sending them crashing down a slope, killing them.It was determined to be tire degradation at the time, but the maintenance records attached behind it showed.Just a week before the accident, they had sent the truck in for full maintenance—all the tires were replaced with new ones at that time. And then there was the second page about the other truck driver. It was Ian Zims, a distant uncle of Kevin's and the logistics team l

Chapter 6

Bewildered, Samuel hollered, "Who are you people?! This is a private property! I'm calling the cops!"I dropped the document envelope on the tea table in front of him and shrugged. "Go on, call them. They should listen to what you did twenty years ago."Samuel's face dropped as he stared at me, but he burst out laughing seconds later. "You're the Lloyds' brat? What, do you want revenge now that you've grown a spine? Let me be straight with you: it's been twenty years, and any evidence has gone up in smoke! So what can you do?"I slowly sat opposite him, looking him in the eye as I slowly said, "See, I went to see someone over the past three days… your mother. It turns out that the middleman she used to look after is still alive, and there's a recording of everything he said."Clang!Samuel stopped laughing right then, his teacup dropping onto the floor and audibly shattering into pieces.Still, he stammered in panic, "W-What are you talking about? I have no idea!"I shrugged aga

Chapter 7

In the end, Kevin ended up a manager at a cafe, making around a grand a month, and had to work constant night shifts.Even then, things were much worse for Yvie.Without a graduate school recommendation, she could no longer remain at the university and had to take a leave of absence, but her house was impounded, and the family's savings was frozen. As her mother collapsed from shock and had to be hospitalized, they couldn't even afford her medical bills.Yvie tried to get a job, but her major was not in high demand. The fact that she tried to steal my graduate school recommendation had caused a huge buzz, with many human resource departments shaking their heads once they recognized her full name.Ultimately, she had to work as a retail assistant, making just fifteen hundred a month including commissions.I had some work at the mall when I passed by the store where she was working. She was wearing a uniform, her hair tied hastily as she helped a middle-aged woman try out lipstic

Chapter 8

After the report presentation, a journalist asked, "Mr. Lloyd, rumor has it that you once applied for a job at Ascendant Group, only to be treated unfairly during the interview process. Is that true?"I smiled at the sea of cameras below the stage and replied, "It's true. The HR director at that time had been bribed and deliberately lowered my scores in all three interview rounds."While the press members clamored, I continued, "That HR director has since been dealt with, and the one who took the offer that should have been mine is now a manager… at some cafe."Laughter rang in the hall, and I waited until the clamor died down before finishing, "I'm not mentioning that to brag. I just want to send a message to every young person looking for work or facing unfair treatment, only to be treated unfairly…"Never give up, and never give in. Don't assume this is simply how the world works or that you have no choice but to endure it."You can remember the people who wronged you. Some deb

I kept quiet, and there were tears in Yvie's eyes as she looked up at me. "I know apologizing means nothing, but I'll still say it. I'm sorry, I've made plenty of mistakes, and I really understand now. It's not because you've become rich, but I've just been through so much the past year, and it has taught me how terrible I've been."I looked into her eyes and couldn't find that condescension she carried as if it was her right. There was only weariness and the burden of life, and earnest guilt.I stayed silent for a few more seconds and said, "Keep up the good work."And with that, I turned and headed into the school, barely walking a few steps when I heard her again. "Carl!"I didn't stop, but she still shouted, "Thank you!"I raised my hand and waved at her without looking back and kept going forward.-It was a beautiful day at the academy.Everywhere, I could see young students dressed in simple clothes, their eyes glowing. They didn't know who I was, but nodded at me as
