Chapter 1

I forced myself upright and stumbled the whole way to the television station where Crystal worked.Crystal stood there in a tasteful, understated work outfit, giving an interview. "What happened to my sister breaks my heart. As a reporter, I intend to report thoroughly on this case and make sure she gets justice."She covered her face and sobbed, as if she were truly innocent.Zeke murmured something to comfort her, then turned to face the cameras. "My fiancée is the victim here. I'm asking everyone to give her space and let her put this behind her. I also hope you'll all support Crystal's work."Applause broke out from the crowd.I braced myself against the wall, my stomach churning so hard I nearly threw up. They'd sacrificed my dignity and reputation, all so my sister could make a name for herself with one story.I couldn't stand it anymore. My eyes burning, I shoved the door open and walked in.Every pair of eyes in the room snapped toward me.Zeke stared at me, stunne

When I opened my eyes again, the hospital room was packed with reporters.Crystal stood among them, microphone in hand, ready to interview me.The flashes went off one after another, so bright I could barely keep my eyes open.Zeke bent over me urgently, his voice soft. "The reporters are all here now. Just answer their questions properly, and it'll be over soon."I lay there in the hospital bed, thirty-four stitches running across my thigh and stomach. My insides felt as if they'd been shattered by the blows. And now, all of it was on display for the cameras.I grabbed the cup on the nightstand and hurled it against the door. It shattered, glass scattering across the floor."Get out! All of you! I'm not doing any interview!"Crystal hurried to push the reporters back, then sat down at the edge of my bed."This is for your own good too. Trust me. Once the story's out, everyone will see the monster he really is."I couldn't have imagined it: that the sister I loved most would t

I froze. The nanny hurried over and scooped the girl back into her arms, looking embarrassed. "You look so much like the lady of the house. No wonder she got confused. I'm so sorry about that."Inside the spacious living room hung a family portrait: Zeke, my sister, and their daughter, all three of them together.Looking at the little girl standing in front of me, I felt all the blood in my body run cold.I was still trying to convince myself it was some kind of mistake when Crystal came out in a bathrobe and swept the girl, Janice Malone, into her arms. "Janice, what are you—"The moment she saw me, her expression froze. My lips moved, but barely any sound came out. "What... is going on here?"Crystal opened her mouth, then closed it again. Right then, Zeke walked out, and the smile on his face died instantly."Lizzie, let me explain. This child was an accident. Back then, I mistook her for you, and that's how Janice came to us. She's been kept and raised elsewhere all these y

Chapter 4

"What a shame. Your baby survived the earlier attack, but couldn't survive that fall."The doctor studied the ultrasound image and shook his head, sounding almost apologetic.Without ever knowing it, I'd lost a real, living child. And the very person who'd killed my baby was the baby's own father.Tears slid silently down my face. It felt like something had driven a spike straight through my heart. My phone buzzed.[Serves you right for getting raped. Crystal did all that for your sake, and you tried to kill her child?][If you ask me, she's just trying to destroy their family. Delusional homewrecker. No shame at all.]The messages kept pouring in, filling my screen faster than I could look away.My body, still weak from the miscarriage, gave out completely, and the wound tore open without warning.Zeke called, his voice sharp with fury."Lizzie, where are you right now? Janice's fever still hasn't broken. You're the one who scared her into it!"I forced the words out. "I'm

"Is this Zeke Malone? Lizzie Bianco was attacked, and her life is in danger. You need to get to our hospital right away!""What?" Zeke's whole body went rigid. "Lizzie was fine when I last saw her. How could she have run into an attacker?"There wasn't time for more questions. He got the hospital's address and hurried to leave in a panic.Crystal hurried to stop him."Zeke, did something happen to Lizzie?"Once he explained, her expression shifted."This is her usual trick. She used to pull this every time she got upset with me, faking being sick just so I'd go and comfort her. She's a grown woman now, and she's still this childish."Hearing that, Zeke's certainty wavered a little."She's... faking it?"Crystal nodded. "She probably still can't accept our relationship, so she's using something like this to get back at us."Seeing the tension ease out of his face, she wound her arms around his neck, her eyes going soft and inviting."Crisis averted. we left off... Let's do it

Shock hit Zeke so hard his grip tightened without thinking, and Janice wailed at the sudden squeeze. He didn't even notice. He was staring at the television.blurred The image on the screen had been blurred, but he could still make out Lizzie's face."How could this happen? She really is in trouble..."Crystal hurried to take Janice from him, her expression complicated."Zeke, maybe it's not her. Maybe you're mistaken—"Before she could finish, he wrenched his hand out of her grip."That's clearly Lizzie. What exactly are you playing at, trying to stop me?"With that, he was already in the car, speeding toward the small hospital. The operating room lights were still on when he got there. He stumbled through the doors, nearly losing his footing."Doctor, you have to save her!"A man who'd always carried himself with pride and composure was now on the verge of dropping to his knees. The doctor had seen this kind of desperation before and could only offer, "We'll do everythin

When I finally regained awareness, I could hear Zeke's choked sobs right beside my ear.He broke down in front of the doctor. "Why isn't my fiancée awake yet? Didn't you say she was out of danger?"The doctor sounded somewhat helpless. "She's out of danger, yes, but her injuries are severe. We can't rule out the possibility of paralysis."Zeke went completely still. Even his hand trembled as he held mine."Lizzie, don't scare me like this. You have to wake up..."His voice kept going on and on beside me, but to me it was nothing more than noise.Toward evening, Crystal arrived in tears."Lizzie, I'm so sorry. I never knew things would turn out like this..."Zeke, just back from dinner, yanked her away from the bedside and shouted, "What right do you have to come see her? Lizzie ended up like this because of you. You're nothing but a vicious, cold-hearted woman!"You knew she was pregnant all along; that's why you suggested filming that staged assault. Then when you saw she was

Zeke came rushing up to me, out of breath, nearly losing his balance."Lizzie, do you really hate me this much?""I finally got to see you wake up, and now you're trying to leave me again. I won't let you leave!"I sat there in my wheelchair and looked up at him. "Do you still expect me to love you? Zeke, we're over."I turned to go, but he grabbed the handles of my wheelchair, his eyes reddening."Why should it be over just because you say it is? Lizzie, I'm trying to make this right. Can't you give me one more chance?"I didn't care who else he loved, but out of everyone, he'd chosen my only family in the world, and had a child with her. In one stroke, I'd lost everyone I had ever relied on.From the day the two of them got together, he'd already lost any chance of winning me back.I forced myself to stay calm. "From now on, I won't bother the three of you, and I'd ask that you not bother me either.""I won't accept that!" Zeke's voice rose, agitated. "I've cut off contact w
