Chapter 1

The villagers were beating drums at the entrance of the village on the day I returned. The atmosphere was incredibly lively. When I left the village ten years ago, the road under my feet had been muddy, while a barren hills stretched endlessly as far as the eye could see. Now, the road was paved with asphalt, smooth and wide. Brand new double-story houses had been built on either side of the road.Barry Trenton had been a rural entrepreneur. He had done a spectacular job of improving the place.I brushed my fingers against the investment proposal in my briefcase. I was confident Barry could handle the one-billion-dollar project. When I got out of the car, the village head, Carlisle Trenton, led a group of villagers to greet me. They were all smiles as they approached me. However, their smiles vanished in an instant the moment they saw it was me."Ethan Snyder? Why is it you? Move aside right now. Don't block the road. We're waiting to welcome an important guest!"I was briefly st

"Tell me!" I demanded. "Where's Barry? What happened to him?"Carlisle was frozen in fear at the ruthlessness in my eyes. He thrashed around and tried to swat my hand away, snapping, "Get your hands off me, Ethan! Who the hell do you think you are? Why should I tell you anything?"Panting heavily, he tried to overwhelm me with bluster. "I'm warning you. The CEO of Universal Group is going to show up any second now. I'll make you pay for it if you cause a scene and ruin the village's plans!"I tightened my grip, tightening my grip until his face turned bluish. "I won't move an inch from this spot until you tell me. I'd like to see who suffers the bigger loss if your plans fall through."The air was thick with tension. The villagers exchanged glances among themselves, but none of them dared to step forward.Suddenly, a young man squeezed through the crowd. "You just want to know where Barry is, right? I'll tell you!"I didn't know who the young man was. He looked to be in his 20s.

When I reached Barry's house, the sight before me stopped me dead in my tracks.Part of the low outer wall had collapsed. Every window had been smashed to pieces. Someone had written the words, "PAY BACK THE MONEY", in bright red paint on the flaking wall.A chill ran down my spine. I couldn't even imagine what Barry had gone through.I hastily pulled out my phone and called my head assistant, Louis Collins. "Suspend all investment in Trentown immediately. right now. Use all our resources to track down Barry Trenton for me. I don't care if he's alive or dead. I'll either see him in the flesh or his corpse!"Louis was incredibly efficient and called me back not even half an hour later."I've tracked him down, Mr. Snyder," he said. "Mr. Barry Trenton is currently at the municipal hospital. His condition doesn't look too good…"My heart squeezed painfully. I then rushed to the municipal hospital without another word. The scent of disinfectant permeated the hospital hallway. I immed

"You're going to seek justice? What a joke!" Carlisle sneered. "I haven't even settled the score with you yet, you jinx. You've got some nerve declaring that you're going to seek justice without any remorse for what you've done!"He spat out the cigarette butt that was hanging from the corner of his mouth. His smile didn't reach his eyes when he looked at me and said, "You're really something else, Ethan. How dare you cause trouble for me right after returning to the village?"You probably already know that Universal Group has suspended the investment in the village. You must have offended the CEO after causing such a ruckus right in front of the village's entrance. You've completely ruined our plans!"I felt nothing but disgust as I stared at Carlisle as he tried to shift the blame to me. "That's what you get for being an ungrateful bastard without a conscience! It's what you deserve! Do you still remember how Barry treated you? He led you into an era of prosperity, building homes

Simon's expression stiffened for a split second before he swiftly fixed an fawning smile on his face. He then stepped forward to greet Louis. "Mr. Collins! W-What brings you here?"He dragged Carlisle, who was still dazed, with him and hastily introduced him to Louis. "Over here, Dad! This is the head assistant of the CEO of Universal Group, Mr. Louis Collins. "Mr. Collins, this is my father. He's the village head of Trentown, Carlisle Trenton."Carlisle immediately snapped back to his senses and frantically offered his hand for a handshake. "I've heard so much about you, Mr. Collins. It's a pleasure to finally meet you in person!"Louis swept his gaze over them. He ignored Carlisle's hand that was suspended in midair, causing Carlisle and Simon to grow awkward.Trying to smooth things over, Simon quickly pointed at me, still restrained by the burly men. "You came at the perfect time, Mr. Collins! It's all this convict, Ethan Snyder's fault! "He caused a commotion at the entr

Louis immediately leaped into action, leading his men to carry out my orders. It didn't take long before a throng of villagers gathered in the empty space in front of the community hall.I supported Barry as we stood on the steps, sweeping my gaze across the villagers below. All of them were wearing different expressions. Finally, I let my gaze linger on Carlisle, Franco, and Simon. The bodyguards had forced them to kneel at the very front of the crowd."A lot of you are under the impression that Barry lied to you and ran away with your money," I said. "I'll be revealing the truth to you today."I shot a look at Louis, who immediately understood my intentions. He stepped forward with a laptop and connected it to the projector that had been prepared beforehand. The evidence appeared on the screen, including screenshots of the tampered finance ledgers and Carlisle's and the others' bank statements. As the evidence scrolled past, the noise of outrage below the stage intensified. The

The thing that pained me the most was Mom's death. I only learned about her passing after I was released from prison. She ended up dying of a broken heart one year after I was imprisoned, overexerting herself as she ran around and demanded justice on my behalf.I wasn't even given the chance to see her for the last time or be there at the end.Everyone avoided me like the plague after I returned to the village, treating me like I was a terrifying criminal. The gossip and abuse were enough to drown me.Barry was the only one who believed in me. He was also the one who gave me the courage to keep living when I was at my lowest. My imprisonment was like a thorn that was embedded in my side for the rest of my life. Occasionally, I would jolt awake while covered in sweat due to nightmares that were related to my time behind bars. Although I had already achieved success, it was a wound that would never fully heal.I stared unblinkingly at Franco. My voice shook as I forced myself to kee

I wasn't sure who started it first, but the villagers surged forward and surrounded Barry to talk over one another as they apologized and thanked him to him."We're sorry, Barry! We wrongly pinned the blame on you.""We'll follow your lead from now on! Barry!"A joyful feeling filled the air with hope and warmth.Just then, Jennifer, who had been standing quietly to the side, suddenly started to cough violently. She spat out a mouthful of blood before toppling backward."Jennifer!" Barry and I shouted at the same time.Barry rushed to her side and supported her.The happy atmosphere from before was immediately replaced by fear."Hurry! Get the car! We're going to the hospital!" I shouted.Louis leaped into action and had a car brought around immediately.…The doctor was wearing a grim expression when he strode out of the emergency room."The patient has end-stage renal failure," he explained. "She's experiencing severe kidney failure. The only way to save her is for her to
