Chapter 1

"Ms. Bellandi, your fever won't go down. It could cause a miscarriage." Lorenzo Abbiati, the private doctor traveling with us, looked serious as he searched his medical bag for fever medicine. The temporary medical station at the dock was packed with Soldati from the Venturi family.Arturo Venturi pushed through the crowd, calling my name again and again.I turned away without saying a word.An unknown number appeared on my phone. It was Arturo's voice. "Rachele, where are you?"I hung up right away.Lorenzo looked at me. "Was that the Don? Should I call him over?"I stared at my bare ring finger. "That's not necessary."The diamond ring that marked me as Arturo's future wife had cut my finger during the escape, so I took it off and hid it in my coat pocket.Arturo called again, and I still didn't answer.Elena Donati was the first to find me.She wore Arturo's suit jacket and carried the life jacket she had just taken off.Elena was bundled up from head to toe and didn't

"Bury the story. Destroy the photos."After the call, Arturo stood beside my hospital bed and explained, "The reporters all rushed at us, and Elena was terrified. I had to get her out of there first. Don't get the wrong idea."I felt a pang of bitterness. "Even if you suppress the reports, people still won't know who your fiancee is."Arturo sat down beside my bed. "The wedding invitations went out to every major mafia boss long ago. Who doesn't know you're the bride?"I pointed at his phone. "The reporters don't know."He gave a quiet scoff and shook his head. "They're just a bunch of idiots who got the wrong person."He took out a warm coat and helped me put it on. "If you're upset about this, I can make our relationship public. But the family was just attacked."If the press starts reporting on our wedding now, you'll become a target."Once I had the coat on, he stood up. "This was the only one left at the clothing store downstairs. Make do with it for a few days."I looked

At 3:00 am, the pain in my abdomen was unbearable, and I was drenched in cold sweat. When I couldn't take it anymore, I called Arturo. He didn't answer the first time. The second time, someone picked up. It was Elena. "Rachele, Don Venturi just fell asleep. The wound on his arm opened up again, and he just had it treated. Don't wake him over something so minor."Arturo's sleepy voice came through the phone. "Elena, bring me the medicine."Elena didn't hang up. Instead, she raised her voice. "Don Venturi, Rachele is calling to ask if there'll be a seat for me at the wedding next month."There was a pause before Arturo answered. "You can have the VIP seat. No one from Rachele's family is coming anyway. Leaving it empty would only make us look bad.""No!" I forced myself to sit upright despite the pain. "That seat is for Papa!"Elena gave a disdainful smile but said nothing.Arturo took the phone. "Rachele, your father is just some thug from the slums. Giving him a VIP seat at

"Delete this disgusting photo." I flung the tablet onto the floor. "This photo cannot be part of my pre-wedding interview."Arturo glanced at the screen. "The Consigliere chose it. I didn't look closely…"I cut him off. "Did he write that love confession too?"Arturo fell silent.Elena stepped in front of him. "Rachele, the attack on the yacht has caused a lot of damage. The Consigliere chose this photo to show that the Don cares about his people."If he denies it now, our enemies will call us cold and heartless. That would be bad for our business."I looked at Arturo. "Do you think so too?"He bent down, picked up the tablet, and handed it back to Richie. "Replace the photo with one of Rachele and me. Keep the caption."Richie was frantic, sweat pouring down his face. "Don Venturi, we've already sent these photos to every mafia boss. The engagement party is tonight! If we change the photo now, people will talk. "It could affect the wedding plans."Arturo thought for a momen

"You're pregnant?" Arturo's hands shook as he picked up the hospital papers. "You're carrying my child. Why didn't you tell me sooner?"He lost control and shouted, pointing a finger in Matteo's face. "And when did you get involved with this bastard? Why is he at our wedding?"I watched Arturo lose his composure without saying a word.Matteo stepped forward and pulled out a thick contract. "Ms. Bellandi is not only pregnant. She has also signed a formal agreement to work with me to take control of the western smuggling routes."He announced the news proudly. "From today on, Ms. Bellandi is my most important partner. She is no longer Don Venturi's fiancee."Carmela Baggio, Arturo's mother, had always held herself above everyone else. She suddenly shot to her feet."Rachele! How dare you work with Arturo's enemy while carrying his child? You've betrayed our family!"Back then, I was only an Associate of the Venturi family. My abilities made Arturo fall for me at first sight.I w

My pregnancy stabilized a week later. All the problems caused by the high fever had also cleared up.I rested a hand on my belly as I walked through the medical center's garden.Pregnancy had made me sensitive to the cold.Matteo draped a coat over my shoulders, then took two steps back, keeping a respectful distance. "Are you still feeling unwell?" he asked. "I'm here. You don't have to push yourself."I gave him a small smile. "Thank you."My father, Rocco Bellandi, was recovering in his room. That afternoon, he sat on his hospital bed and sighed. "Rachele, I've only held you back. Arturo is the Don, after all. Becoming his wife is something most women could only dream of."I looked at Papa's aging face and shook my head. "Papa, Arturo and I are over. I don't ever want to see him again."Outside the hospital room, Arturo looked dejected. He had gone to great lengths to find out where I was and rushed over, only to hear those words. He didn't enter the room. Instead, he as

A few days later, Elena came to the medical center to see me.Her eyes were red-rimmed as she tried to look pitiful. "Rachele, everyone is putting pressure on Don Venturi. He's barely holding on."I really couldn't swim on the yacht. That's why he gave me your life jacket. Can't you be more understanding?"She was trying to use the same trick to guilt-trip me again, but I couldn't be bothered with her.Suddenly, footsteps sounded behind me.Arturo strode over with his Underboss. He had a file in his hand and hurled it at Elena's face."I checked your records. You grew up by the sea and got your diving certification years ago," he snarled. "You could swim, yet you lied to me!"I also checked the security footage. That cut on your arm at the wedding was self-inflicted. Elena, I can't believe how manipulative you are!"Elena trembled in fear. "Don Venturi, I was terrified when the yacht was attacked. I needed you with me! I depended on you because I wanted to survive. What did I

A day later, construction on the children's medical center started again. The names listed as the founders were mine and Papa's.I showed Papa pictures of the construction site on my phone, and he was elated. After everything was taken care of, Arturo found me at the site."Elena has been crippled, and she's gone for good. I gave her a villa in the suburbs to repay the debt I owed her brother," he said. That suburban villa had belonged to his grandfather, and Arturo had grown up there. As an adult, he had spent five years renovating it, even choosing every tile himself.I asked him, "Can you really give it up?"His eyes were red-rimmed. "No. That's why it counts as a price."He handed me a document. "These are all my personal assets. I'll give you everything I have if you're willing to come back."I didn't even look at it. "Take it back."He hesitated for a long time before finally speaking in a quiet, pleading voice. "Rachele, can I… try to win you back? You were by my side

"Add another layer of carpet to keep the children from falling and getting hurt," I instructed. The day the children's medical center was completed, I walked around with my heavily pregnant belly, checking every detail of the floors.Papa walked slowly behind me, chatting and laughing with Matteo. He had recovered from his illness and was now in good health. After we finished touring the medical center, Papa called everyone over for a group photo. The picture captured everyone with bright smiles. The pain I once carried had become one of the most beautiful parts of my life.I gave up the wealth and status of being Don Arturo Venturi's wife, but I kept what mattered most.I still had my dignity, my love, and my child. The wind picked up, and the air grew cool.Matteo came over and wrapped a scarf around my neck. "Keep warm. Don't catch a cold."I asked with a smile, "If I get a fever, will you stay by my side and take care of me?"Matteo answered seriously, "I won't leave you
