Chapter 1

Richard blinked. "Freya, what's that supposed to mean?"A moment later, he seemed to figure it out."Of course. I made you wait three years. You must've had a hard time. No wonder you're saying this just to get back at me."I pulled out my phone and texted the bodyguards waiting at the edge of the neighborhood, telling them to come over right away. Then I looked back at him. "Richard, are you deaf? I said I'm married."Richard just chuckled, clearly not believing a word."Baby, you've been with me since you were 20. That's ten years of your youth. What man would want a thirty-year-old hag who knows nothing but housework? I have a company now and a big client lined up."He pointed at the for-sale sign out front."You're selling the house your parents left you. Who else do you have to lean on but me? Stop being difficult."The smug look on his face made me wonder how I'd ever been stupid enough to love him.Back then, I was the youngest daughter of the Marchettis, the most powerful mafia

Sonia lit up too and took the boy from Richard. When she saw Noah's face flushed with fever, she glared at me, her eyes turning red."Freya, how could you let him get this sick? My poor baby. Mommy came back too late. I can't believe I let you suffer like this."Noah already felt miserable, and now he was being passed back and forth between two strangers. He burst into tears and struggled with all his strength."Aww, you don't feel good, do you?"When Sonia leaned in to kiss him, Noah planted a hand on her mouth and shoved her away.I caught a flash of impatience in her eyes. Then, to my horror, she pulled something from her pocket and shoved it straight into Noah's mouth."There. You'll be quiet soon."My gun was in my hand before I even realized it. I couldn't risk hitting Noah, so I fired a warning shot into the ground beside Sonia's feet."What did you give him?"At the sound of the gunshot, Sonia went pale and froze.Richard scoffed. "Don't try to scare us with a replica. You've n

Chapter 3

She sobbed so hard she could barely breathe."Freya, you've hated me since the day I started working there."You made fun of my background with everyone else, then gave me your unwanted clothes like I was some charity case."You got to play the saint, and I never even complained. I put up with all of it."And I already told you, if my being here bothers you, I'll leave Richard."I've already offered to give him up. What more do you want? Now you're even lying about my son just to take him away from me?"The moment she finished, Richard backhanded me.I stumbled, but Millie caught me before I fell.Millie stared at Richard in disbelief. "Do you have any idea who you just hit? We're..."She was about to tell him who I was when Richard punched her too."Don't try to scare me. I know better than anyone that she's nothing but an orphan! Someone like her was never fit to be my wife anyway. Now sign over the house."He rubbed his wrist and looked down at me with contempt."Let me tell you som

Richard hesitated. His eyes flicked between the gun in my hand and the house. If I was telling the truth, he was in serious trouble.Sonia elbowed him and whispered, "We looked into her before we came, remember? Freya's parents were nobodies who got lucky in business."They spent every penny they had on this house, then drowned at sea."The mafia isn't exactly a secret in this country. Of course she knows a few names."Richard, if you can't cover the shortfall, you'll lose the company to them."So I'd been right. Richard's company was running out of money. That was why he'd suddenly come looking for me after three years. He'd planned to sweet-talk me into taking him back, trick me into handing over the house, then toss me aside. But after seeing Noah, he'd remembered the son he'd left behind. The moment he realized he could use Noah to threaten me, he stopped pretending to be nice.Richard grabbed a broom from against the wall."If you're a Marchetti, then I'm the Marchetti Don!"He sw

Within seconds, Richard and Sonia were both pinned to the ground.Men in suits flooded in. When Richard saw the obsidian tattoos on their forearms, all the color drained from his face.My words must have finally come back to him."I'm a Marchetti. I'm already married."At last, it clicked. His eyes went so wide they almost bulged out of his head."Y-you've been lying to me this whole time! You really are with the mafia!"The bodyguards didn't want to cause a scene in the middle of a residential neighborhood, so they dragged Richard and Sonia into the basement.Richard kept shouting at me as someone helped me up. He was so busy yelling that he failed to notice the man walking through the crowd of black suits. The striking man wore a royal blue suit.William walked straight up to Richard and kicked him in the leg without saying a word.Richard's leg snapped, and he screamed.William motioned for someone to gag him. Then he stepped over Richard and pulled me into his arms.I clutched his

I woke up three days later in a hospital run by the Corvino family.William had stayed beside me the whole time. The moment I opened my eyes, he helped me drink some water. He knew exactly what was on my mind. One look at my face, and he answered before I could ask."Noah's fever is down. I've sent three of our best nannies to care for him at the estate. He's fine."Then he fell silent. The way he looked at me made my stomach drop.I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms."Where's Millie? Where is she?"William wrapped his arms around me. "Millie has a severe brain bleed, and the doctors found another serious condition. She's still in the ICU, fighting for her life."Millie had never once told me she was sick.I thought about how tired she'd looked lately. I'd always assumed she just didn't have as much energy as everyone else. How had I missed it?If I had known, I would never have let her come to the house with me.My vision blurred with tears. I tried to steady myself, b

With the Brotherhood's help, Richard made it out alive. He had two broken ribs, a calf injury from the rubber bullet, and a concussion from William's kick. The Brotherhood dumped him and Sonia at a hospital, left guards outside, and told him the matter was over.Richard didn't believe them. He barely slept until he was almost ready to leave the hospital. Only after days passed without anyone coming for him did he finally let his guard down. The next morning, Sonia shook him awake in a panic. "It's bad. The IRS got a tip that some of our funding came from undisclosed sources and wasn't taxed. They've already sent agents to the company."Richard broke out in a sweat. Any trace of sleep vanished.Neither of them had fully recovered, but they still rushed out of the hospital and headed straight for the office.Richard hadn't spent years clawing his way up and building his company without picking up a few tricks. He'd prepared for an audit long ago. After digging through the records, the IR

"I never loved you. I kept you around because you cost me nothing. You never asked for anything."Sonia had been with him since the company was founded, yet he'd never given her a single share. She had truly loved him. His words left her frozen.Hospital security arrived just in time and dragged Richard away.Another kick, and he might have broken her nose.By the time they were ready to take him into surgery, he'd calmed down a little. He stared at Sonia for a long moment, his lips parting as if he wanted to say something. In the end, all he said was, "We'll talk when I'm out."Sonia wiped away her tears and walked off in a daze. Then she spotted me standing down the hall. She thought I had come for revenge and turned to run.I said, "Don't you want to know where your son is and how he's doing?"She stopped dead. After a moment, she slowly turned back, watching me warily.Sonia was still sharp. It didn't take her long to figure out why I'd come."I can give you what you want."Her eye

"I went through your books. Your company has been a financial wreck since last year. Green Viper money is the only thing keeping it afloat."They obviously didn't step in because they admired your talent."Your company already did business across borders. That made it far more useful for laundering money than a newly registered company."Building that operation inside your company must have cost them a fortune. I did the math. It took them a year and cost fifty million dollars."And right now, another ninety million dollars is moving through your company in batches."Too bad it's frozen."The room went dead silent.Pure fear filled Richard's eyes. He'd never told anyone the exact numbers. If I knew them, there was only one possible explanation. I'd seen the encrypted file."But that's impossible! I hid it so well!"He was starting to lose it. He tried to get out of bed, but his legs gave way and he crashed to the floor.I looked down at him."It was Sonia. She knew your passwords all a

Chapter 10

The Corvino operatives planted inside the hospital went into action the moment I showed up to "visit" Richard. They made sure the cameras missed me, so there were no witnesses and no physical evidence that I had ever been there. They also made sure no nurses or doctors came near his room until Richard climbed onto the windowsill and jumped.Afterward, William looked into Richard's medical history and tracked down his former private physician. For a modest fee, the doctor created a fake medical record claiming Richard had suffered from clinical depression. The police knew better than to dig too deep. They had heard that Richard had managed to offend both the Marchetti and Corvino families. They went through the motions and ruled his death a suicide.I never sent the money-laundering evidence to the IRS or the police.Richard had never understood one simple rule of the underworld: even the strongest evidence could become worthless overnight.People with power could be bought, pressured,
