Chapter 1

Zack's POVThe right side of my face was swollen like a balloon when I walked into the classroom while clutching my midterm test papers. Flecks of blood stained the corner of my lips. One of my female classmates whispered, "Zack Curtis got beaten again just because he didn't get a perfect score on his math exam. I feel so sorry for him…"Another classmate, Steve Norton, shot a disdainful look at me and sneered, "Why do you feel sorry for him? His father is our homeroom teacher. He's hogging the best resources, and yet he still can't get a perfect score. He deserves to get beaten."I paused for a moment. I swallowed the bitter taste in my throat before entering the classroom. My dad, Justin Curtis, had just slapped me in front of all the teachers and students in the office until my face turned swollen."98 points?" he snapped. "Should you have lost those two points? Say something!"Dad's furious scolding echoed in my ears. There was a persistent ringing in my right ear after he r

Chapter 2

Zack's POVThat night, I smelled the familiar scent of food in the air when I pushed open the door to my house. A warm light had been switched on in the living room. Dad sat at the dining table. A bowl of mashed potatoes, a plate of fried chicken, and a pot of mushroom soup were placed on the table in front of him. Dad didn't know how to cook before, but he was forced to fill the roles of both my father and mother after Mom left. He burned himself countless times before he finally learned how to cook.I made as little noise as possible as I changed into my indoor slippers. I wanted to hide my swollen right cheek and the flecks of blood at the corner of my lips in the shadows. However, Dad immediately looked up when I moved."You're back?"Although his voice was still stern, there was a trace of nearly imperceptible worry in his tone. "Does your face still hurt?"I looked down and shook my head. I then walked over to the dining table. Sinking into the chair opposite him, I beg

Chapter 3

Zack's POVI went to school as usual the next day. When the recess bell rang, I pressed my right cheek to the cool surface of my desk, hoping that it would alleviate some of the pain.Steve suddenly entered the classroom with his nose stuck in the air. He brought his lips close to my ear. He didn't even bother to hide the glee in his voice when he whispered, "You're done for."I calmly closed my eyes and got lost in my thoughts. I wondered if Dad would acknowledge Steve as his son once I was dead. He probably would since he liked Steve so much. But I didn't know if Steve could endure Dad's punishments whenever he needed to assert his authority.Just then, the door slammed open. At the loud noise, everyone looked up with startled expressions.Dad stood at the door. His chest was heaving, and his expression was steely. He walked to the middle of the classroom. His eyes were reminiscent of poisoned wolf's as he slowly swept his icy gaze across everyone's anxious faces. Finally, he pi

Chapter 4

Zack's POVMy world seemed to turn upside down at that moment. There was a deafening buzzing in my ears. Pain exploded from the point of impact, spreading from my cheek to my entire skull.Black spots danced in my vision. A warm liquid flowed from my nose and the corner of my lips at the same time. A metallic taste permeated my mouth."How dare you talk back?" Dad roared. "How dare you continue to lie?"His voice was sharp, and his tone had changed. He grabbed a fistful of my fringe and dragged me along like I was a rag doll.I stumbled over my feet as we headed toward the podium. The pain that throbbed through my head was unbearable, but I couldn't feel it anymore. All I could feel was the stinging pain that lanced through my cheek and a burning humiliation."I want everyone to watch closely!" Dad exclaimed as he threw me against the hard edge of the podium. The side of my waist collided against the edge, causing me to grunt in pain and curl into myself.Dad grabbed my hair ag

Chapter 5

Zack's POVDad didn't spare another glance at me. He pushed back the flyaway strands of his hair that had gotten messed up during our earlier scuffle and smoothed down the wrinkles on his shirt. He then fixed the solemn expression that belonged to "Mr. Curtis" back on his face.He turned around and headed toward the school's head of discipline Mary Milner's office.I shivered like a leaf in the wind. My heart throbbed painfully. I didn't understand why I had to suffer so much—why my pride was only a tool for Dad to use to assert his authority.I didn't know how much time had passed as I knelt there. Perhaps it was only a few minutes. Perhaps it was an entire century.I could still move my left arm. Slowly, I lifted my trembling hand and rummaged around in my pocket, pulling out my tiny notebook. I mustered what little strength I had left and wrote a short note in wonky handwriting."Accused me of dating on school grounds. Humiliated me by stripping me in front of everyone. -1."

Chapter 6

Third-Person POVJustin's composed expression stiffened in an instant. He slowly turned to look at the female student. His eyes were wide as if he hadn't understood her words."What… what did you say?" he asked."Zack jumped out of the window of the hallway on the sixth floor," the female student explained. "The window's right outside our classroom. There's so much blood… The ambulance is already here…"Unable to keep her emotions in check any longer, the female student covered her face and cried after she was done speaking."He… jumped off the building?"Justin repeated the words to himself over and over again, feeling as if just voicing the syllables was a herculean task. The color drained from his face. His lips began to tremble uncontrollably. There was a loud buzzing in his ears before his mind went blank. The excuses that he had made before about "asserting his authority", "setting an example", and "for his own good" turned into malicious curses that echoed sharply in his

Chapter 7

Third-Person POVA large part of the grassy field in front of the school building had been dyed a shocking shade of red.The police had cordoned off the scene. Paramedics dressed in white coats were administering emergency treatment. Several pale-faced teachers and school administrators who had heard the commotion were gathered around the stretcher.Justin pushed through the crowd and stared at the small, familiar figure on the stretcher.Zack was lying quietly on the stretcher. His uniform blazer had been pulled open, revealing the thin shirt underneath that was caked with dirt and blood. His face was still swollen, and dried flecks of blood still stained the corners of his mouth. His eyes were shut tightly, and his face was as white as a sheet. Several strands of his black hair, damp with sweat and tears, stuck to his forehead. He was so quiet. His silence was terrifying."Zack!" Justin screamed as he threw himself at the stretcher. He wanted to reach out to touch Zack, but

Chapter 8

Third-Person POVThe red light above the emergency room in the municipal hospital was glaringly bright.Justin was slumped on the cold bench in the hallway. He stared unblinkingly at the sealed doors, looking as if his soul had escaped his body.Alan left to deal with the paperwork while Jasper accompanied Justin. When Jasper tried to say some comforting words, he realized that anything he said was completely useless in the face of the tragedy that had occurred. The minutes ticked by. Every second felt excruciatingly long. There was no telling how much time had passed before the emergency room doors finally swung open. A doctor strode out, wearing a grim expression.Justin sprung up from his seat like a coil. He rushed over to the doctor and grabbed his arm, exclaiming, "How's my son, doctor? How is he?"The doctor stared at Justin, who looked rather pathetic and had a crazed look in his eyes. "Are you the patient's father?" he asked in a low voice."That's right! I'm his fathe

Chapter 9

Third-Person POVThe emergency room doors only swung open when dawn was about to break on the horizon. The head surgeon looked exhausted when he strode out of the room. "The surgery was a success. We've managed to save his life, but the situation is pretty grim. "Due to his severe cranial damage, we're unable to determine whether he'll wake up again or the condition he'll be in even if he does regain consciousness. "It'll also take a long time for his organs to make a full recovery. Also…"The doctor looked at Justin, who swayed unsteadily on his feet. His voice took on a mocking edge as he continued, "The patient's will to survive is extremely weak. I wonder what he went through."Zack was alive. But the doctor's explanations about the uncertainty of whether he would ever wake up again and his lack of will to survive were like blades slicing into Justin's heart."His will to survive is weak?" he repeated. "How can that be?"He stumbled toward the gurney that was wheeled out

Chapter 10

Third-Person POV Justin finally made it to the police station. The police officers on duty stared at him. He was clearly dazed, but he was able to describe the situation to them in a firm voice."I want to make a police report!" Justin exclaimed. "I want to file a complaint against my student, Steve Norton, for slander, which resulted in my son, Zack Curtis, getting heavily injured."He then numbly told the police everything that had transpired, sparing no details. When the police officers realized how serious the case was, they made a detailed report and immediately looked through the surveillance cameras to search for evidence.Justin headed back to the school after he left the police station. He made a beeline for the principal's office and placed the resignation letter that he had prepared beforehand on the desk. After leaving the principal's office, he made his way toward his familiar classroom. It was recess, but the school was eerily quiet. News of Zack jumping off the b
