Chapter 1

Right after getting discharged from the hospital, my boyfriend, Javon Hickman, put together a proposal for my best friend, Abbie Cote.He had prepared everything, from fireworks and candles to roses and a ring.He had once promised me a proposal just like this. He said he wanted the whole world to witness how much he loved me.Now, he was giving that exact profession of love to someone else.Abbie cast a fleeting glance in my direction.A second later, my phone buzzed with a text from her. "Abilene, please don't overthink this. Once Javon gets his memory back, I'm sure he'll remember that you're the one he loves."I stared at the man whose eyes were overflowing with devotion.Would he, though?Everything happening right now was exactly what Javon wanted. If I weren't carrying his baby, he'd probably wish this "amnesia" lasted forever.Seeing Abbie nod, Javon couldn't hide the pure joy in his eyes. He reached for her hand and slipped the diamond ring onto her finger. "Abbie, no

After scheduling the hospital appointment for the following day, I went straight home. The moment I pushed the door open, I saw Javon standing outside my bedroom, staring fixedly inside.Only when he noticed me did he calmly look away. For a second, I thought the familiar surroundings had triggered something and brought back memories of our time here. When I first moved to Jolmere after graduation to build a life for myself, all I could afford was a tiny room. The day after Javon visited my 100-square-foot rented room and saw how I was living, he moved me out. He brought me to this place, personally arranging every gift he had ever given me around the apartment.Back when we were together, Javon acted as if he wanted to give me the world. It wasn't just money transfers or expensive presents. He made so many handmade gifts too—a scrapbook, a sketchpad, and a handwritten diary of our relationship.Back then, I genuinely believed he loved me.Looking back now, he only gave me tho

Before I passed out, I thought I saw Javon rushing toward me.When I opened my eyes, I was already in the hospital."You fainted and hit the cabinet earlier," the nurse said when she saw me waking up."If your friends hadn't found you so quickly, that amount of bleeding could've been dangerous. Also, do you know that you're pregnant? You collapsed like that. Where's the father? He hasn't come to see you."The wound on my forehead throbbed with a dull pain as I stiffly changed the subject. "Where are my friends?""They left right after paying the bill."The last flicker of hope in my heart evaporated into nothing.I had passed out once before, and Javon was the one who found me.I was washing dishes at home when a sudden drop in blood sugar made me faint. I collapsed straight onto the shattered porcelain.By then, his severe emotional dependence on me had improved, but he said he had a sudden, unexplainable sense of dread. After calling me over a dozen times with no answer, he

Seeing how pale my face was, Javon frowned imperceptibly.I turned my head away, intending to pretend I hadn't seen him, but he suddenly spoke up, "How are you feeling? Abbie said you're pregnant. A gynecologist I know happens to have an opening."I forced myself to stay calm. "I'm fine."He stepped back to give me space. As I neared the corner, Javon suddenly called out to me again, "Pregnant women shouldn't take medication, but if you have a cold, warm lemon and honey can help."My heart skipped a beat. The heavy nasal tone in my voice was indeed an early sign of a cold.Javon had actually noticed. There was a period back then when I coughed frequently, and Javon had told me that warm lemon and honey could relieve a cough. He said he had tried it himself and that it worked better than any medication. As he walked past me, Javon paused once more. His looming shadow cast an overwhelming pressure over me. "By the way, can you move out?"He held out a card, his tone entirely det

His friend added, "Then again, Abilene loves you so much. Even if she knows you're just faking amnesia to fool her, she probably wouldn't do anything drastic, right?"At most, she'll just throw a fit. You can just pacify her and smooth things over. Of course, it's also possible I was just mistaken."Reading the follow-up text, Javon clung to a faint thread of hope, telling himself his act had been seamless.I loved him so deeply. There was no way I would actually go through with an abortion. His friend had to be mistaken. With that thought, Javon's racing heart gradually settled down. However, Abbie couldn't shake the mounting guilt, and she ultimately decided to come clean with Javon. "Javon, the person who saved you when you were little… was actually Abilene."The other day, you mentioned having a blood disease as a child and that someone saved your life by donating bone marrow. You only remembered her name starts with the letter 'A,' but that 'A' stands for Abilene."I've ne

Chapter 6

Javon left the hospital in a daze, completely despondent.I had indeed gone through with the abortion. No matter how thoroughly he searched the hospital, he couldn't find a trace of me.A suffocating layer of dread weighed heavily on his heart. He had thought it through on his way out.Mistaking the identity of his bone marrow donor had certainly been a misunderstanding on his part. Yet over the past three years together, completely setting aside his gratitude for saving his life, he had genuinely developed real feelings for me.Even if we had lost our baby now, we could always have another one in the future. The doctor's words served as a reminder that he could still reach out to me himself.Javon immediately dialed my number. As he waited for the call to go through, anxiety burned inside him. After ringing for a moment, the call finally connected.Javon scrambled to explain. "I'm so sorry, Abilene. Abbie came clean to me. I finally realized I got the wrong person all along.

A year later, my body had mostly recovered.I quit my job and spent most of my time traveling or doing volunteer work. After everything I had been through, I no longer cared about much except living my life well. With a relaxed mindset and constant movement from traveling, my mental state actually ended up much better than before. While dropping off supplies at a psychiatric hospital, one of the volunteers mentioned that they were short-staffed and asked if I could stay and help.Having nothing else to do, I casually agreed, never expecting to run into Javon there.I had assumed he and Abbie were already married, so seeing him in a psychiatric hospital was a complete shock.During those few seconds I stood frozen, Javon didn't recognize me either. It wasn't until his eyes landed on the name tag pinned to my chest that he whipped his head up to stare at my face.Over the past year, my whole appearance had indeed changed drastically from when he first met me.Once he confirmed i

Abbie's face was the very picture of remorse. "Abilene, not a single day has passed this past year that I haven't regretted what I did."I'm so sorry for taking credit for what was yours and keeping you and Javon apart for so long. I feel terrible about it."After you left, Javon broke down completely. Every time he tried to end his life, it was over you. I was terrified you'd come back only to find him dead, so I checked him into a psychiatric hospital for round-the-clock supervision."She broke down in tears. "I was selfish back then. But you're back now. I'm giving him back to you."I took a step back, my expression blank. "Don't bother. That's all in the past for me. I don't care anymore. Even if the two of you stay together, get married, and have kids, you won't hear a word from me."After all, he had proposed to her before I left.Besides, I truly had no desire to consider relationships again.Javon's face twisted in even greater agony at those words. "Abilene, have you no

Peering through the peephole, I saw Javon still standing outside the door. He seemed lost in thought, showing no sign of leaving anytime soon.It was a long time before he finally turned and walked away.I'd assumed that after making things crystal clear, Javon wouldn't bother me again. Yet after a brief period of peace, he started showing up in my life frequently. He'd originally been admitted to a psychiatric hospital due to his unstable mental state, but somehow, he had returned to normal. His doctor called it a miraculous recovery, speculating that he must have reconnected with his emotional anchor. They warned, however, that if that anchor were gone, he could still pose a danger to himself or others. After his discharge, Javon rented a place right near mine.Fresh flowers and cakes began showing up outside my door daily, alongside duplicate gifts of everything he'd ever given me in the past. Only this time, every gift came with a card filled with his regret and apologies.E
