"Jamie, stop making things up! Fine, I'm not going anywhere. Happy now? I'll just stay here and suffer all night!"Lily spun around and started climbing into bed.But I wasn't about to let her end the conversation that easily.I caught the back of her shirt and pulled her away."Let me go! Are you crazy?" Lily shrieked.I ignored her and went straight to my desk, yanking open the bottom drawer.Those comments had put me on edge.If they were right, Lily's plan tonight went a lot further than tricking me into marking her present.I pulled out my wallet and opened it.My credit cards, debit card, and student ID were exactly where they should be—but not my driver's license.The slot where I always kept it was empty.My stomach dropped.I knew it.I turned and fixed Lily with a hard stare. I ignored the whispers and judgmental looks coming from the hallway.Instead, I opened my contacts and found Ms. Karina Dawson's number.Then I called her and put the phone on speaker.After the second ring, Lily suddenly realized what I was doing. No one said a word.For a moment, it felt as though everyone had stopped breathing.The girls crowded around the doorway and stared at the phone, their eyes wide. Someone audibly gasped. Sophie's mouth fell open.Ms. Dawson had been halfway through the doorway when she froze, one foot still raised. Her expression went from stunned to furious in a matter of seconds.I was the only one who didn't look surprised. A faint, humorless smile tugged at my lips.Lily remained frozen for a full two seconds. Then reality seemed to hit her.She let out a shriek and scrambled toward the phone. "No! "This is a miniature security camera." I held it up between two fingers. "I installed it the day I moved in. I'm a light sleeper, and I didn't like the idea of someone coming into our room and going through my stuff." I glanced at Lily. "Funny. I was worried about strangers stealing from us. Turns out the thief was already living here." I removed the memory card, grabbed an adapter from my desk drawer, and plugged it into my laptop.The moment Lily realized what I was about to do, she completely lost it. "You can't watch that!"She lunged for my laptop. "That's an invasion of privacy! I'll report you!" Before she could reach the desk, two girls from next door grabbed her and held her back. The field erupted.Hundreds of heads turned in my direction at once.Some people looked stunned. Others stared with open judgment, while more than a few seemed thrilled to have front-row seats to the biggest scandal of the semester. At the back of the group, Lily suddenly came back to life. She ducked behind the students in front of her, but she couldn't hide the smile spreading across her face. Even Sophie couldn't resist getting a jab in."See? I knew there had to be more to this. His wife literally showed up with hotel records. That's not exactly nothing." Ms. Dawson was sweating bullets. She hurried toward the platform and reached for the microphone, only for Karen to shove her aside. "Don't touch me! Is this what kind of students you people are teaching here?" I took a deep breath.Under the disbelieving stares of everyone in my class, I stepped out of line. I didn't lower my head, nor did I hesitate. I simply walked straight toward the platform. Chapter 7

Karen followed everyone's gaze. The moment she spotted Lily, her expression changed."So it's you!" She stormed off the platform and headed straight for her. Lily's eyes widened in terror."Help!"She spun around and tried to run, but Karen caught up with her almost immediately and grabbed her before she could get more than a few steps away. Chaos erupted."You've been sneaking around with my husband?" Karen was beyond furious now. "And you stole someone else's ID to cover it up?" Lily screamed and struggled to get away as the confrontation quickly turned physical. The entire field watched in stunned silence. For several seconds, even campus security seemed caught off guard by how quickly everything had escalated. Ms. Dawson finally snapped into action. "That's enough! Break it up!"She waved frantically at the security officers, who rushed forward and pulled the two women apart. Lily collapsed onto the grass, sobbing. "I'm sorry… I was wrong. I won't do it again…"
