Chapter 1

Amid the rumble of the train, Mackenzie Holt, my best friend, excitedly shook my arm. "Wake up, Adeline!"I followed her gaze and saw a breathtaking view outside the train window, like something out of a fairy tale.I finally realized that I had been reborn as my senses came back to me. I had returned to the day Mackenzie and I had set out on a trip together.Upon noticing that I hadn't said anything, Mackenzie leaned closer and looked at me. "Haven't woken up yet?"I stared at that all-too-familiar face, my heart pounding with fear and refusing to slow down.Mackenzie was my university roommate and the class academic representative. She was cheerful, optimistic, and sweet, and everyone in our class liked her, including the faculty. I was completely different. I was quiet, withdrawn, and constantly trying to blend into the background.I never expected us to have any real interaction even though we lived in the same dorm, but everything changed after that one incident. Chapter 2

Mackenzie seemed to have lost all reason while they were in the early stages of their relationship, willingly giving in to Caleb's demands. "Caleb says he's doing this for my own good. He just cares about me too much."He claimed that having her report her whereabouts was for her safety. "Did you see that celebrity who got trafficked to Malgora? She only survived because she kept people updated on her location constantly, Mackenzie."He didn't allow her to have male friends. "There's no such thing as a platonic friendship between a man and a woman. I'm able to do it, so you should be able to do it for me too, right, Mackenzie?"He controlled her outfits. "You dress to please the person you love. Who else are you dressing up for if not me, Mackenzie?"Caleb's steady stream of manipulative reasoning left Mackenzie firmly believing this was love. They suddenly had a huge fight just because Mackenzie got her nails done. "Caleb says he can't stand manicures and prefers a natural look.

I was dumbstruck after hearing what Mackenzie said.Caleb's lips curved into an unsettling smile. He raised his hand as if to strike, and Mackenzie flinched back reflexively, but his hand settled gently on her head instead. He stroked her hair affectionately, chuckling softly. "I knew you wouldn't do that to me, Mackenzie. I told you before to keep your distance from her. Why wouldn't you listen to me?"He then walked toward me and said, "You're truly a bitch, Adeline. You were the one encouraging her to break up with me whenever we fought. You're the one feeding her all these bad ideas. You should've died long ago, Adeline."I tried to run, but I couldn't move—my body was completely locked up. I suddenly felt a searing pain shoot through my abdomen. I collapsed to the ground, clutching my bleeding abdomen. I met Mackenzie's vacant, lifeless eyes as I lay in the pool of blood, but she quickly lowered her head and avoided looking at me.I slowly closed my eyes as my consciousnes

"I guess Caleb is handsome, has a six-pack, has a great job that makes a lot of money, cares about me, is willing to spend money on me…" Mackenzie started counting on her fingers."He has a really bad temper sometimes, though. He even got physical with me last time. Is that a sign he might become abusive, Adeline?" Mackenzie asked, looking troubled.I chuckled dryly and said, "You know what they say—love and hate are two sides of the same coin, and a little fighting keeps things interesting! It's not just boyfriend and girlfriend; even old married couples go at it all the time!"That bit of manipulative persuasion likely left Mackenzie even more convinced she had struck gold with Caleb.I kept stirring the steaming coffee in the cup, and when I looked up, I found Mackenzie staring at me with her eyes wide open, her face just inches from mine."I need you to look me in the eyes, Adeline!" Mackenzie fixed her gaze on me without blinking. She then asked seriously, "Are you really Ade

I got up, poured a glass of warm water, and handed it to Mackenzie. "If something isn't meant to be, there's no point forcing it. I mean, maybe this is all fate's doing. You should just rest up and take care of yourself. You still have plenty of time ahead of you. "It might even be a blessing in disguise. What would people think if word got out that you had a baby out of wedlock?""I-I was such a fool! I completely misjudged him! I asked him to marry me, but he said his career wasn't stable enough and told me to wait. I see now that it was all just a bunch of excuses!"Upon seeing how worked up Mackenzie was, I had no choice but to try to soothe her. "Don't get yourself worked up, Mackenzie. It's not good for your recovery. I'm sure it was just an accident, and that Caleb didn't mean for this to happen.Mackenzie suddenly fell silent. She stared at me as though she didn't recognize me. She probably never imagined I'd say that, given how I'd always backed her unconditionally.I ha

I tried to reason with Caleb as calmly as I could, but unexpectedly, he just plopped himself down on the couch and refused to budge.I gave up trying to accommodate him since he refused to budge. I took out my phone and walked toward the door, saying, "If you don't leave right now, I'll call the security over."Just as I turned the doorknob, Caleb shot up from behind me, rushed forward, and knocked my phone clean out of my hand.It clattered across the floor, skidding several feet away, while I lost my footing and tumbled to the ground.Amid the standoff, Mackenzie's voice echoed from outside. "Have you lost your damn mind, Caleb?"She then helped me to my feet and asked, "Are you alright, Adeline?"I stood up and put some distance between us. They were truly more relentless and maddening to deal with than parasites. "I've already told you that I'm breaking up with you, Caleb," Mackenzie said, emphasizing every single word as if she had finally made up her mind."It's her agai

I added, "I genuinely hope you and Mackenzie stay together forever, Caleb."Caleb hesitated briefly before finally saying, "Thank you."On our way back, Mackenzie reminded me, "If my mother asks about Caleb, make sure you don't say too much. You know how much I've always wanted to start a family with him. What if something happens and I lose him to someone else?""Got it," I said indifferently.Mackenzie finally smiled, as if everything was going exactly the way she wanted. It wasn't long after that they met each other's families. Mackenzie spoke highly of Caleb in front of Denise, praising him for everything he had done.Just as both families agreed on the marriage and were about to make it official, an incident happened that caused Denise to call off the wedding on the spot. That weekend, right as I was heading over to Mackenzie's, I spotted a familiar figure in the apartment complex. It was Mackenzie's mother. "What brings you here, Denise?"Denise turned toward me when she

"You've had enough, Mackenzie. It's already so late, so let's head back," I said.It was already 1:00 am, and I was yawning nonstop."If only... every woman out there got beaten too… I mean, why is it only happening to me? I wish your boyfriend would hit you too, Adeline… I'd probably feel less miserable then… Why am I the only one suffering?" Mackenzie drunkenly rambled. It was true what they say about drunken honesty. I already knew what kind of person she was, but hearing it still hit me hard. Mackenzie didn't hate Caleb; she hated me instead. I couldn't bring myself to see the Mackenzie in front of me as the same cheerful and kind person I had once known.I carefully tried to feel out what Mackenzie was thinking once she had sobered up. "Do you still want to be with Caleb? Your mother is completely opposed to your relationship, though. What are you going to do now, Mackenzie?"Mackenzie bit her lip and replied despondently, "I-I can't just let him go. I've put so much into thi

Chapter 9

I spotted a familiar face after chancing on a viral video. In a crowded commercial district, a woman toiled away behind a food stall, a child strapped to her back. Through the smoke and grease, her fine, pretty features were still visible. She looked completely out of place, like a flower blooming somewhere it shouldn't. That kind of beauty made her stand out from the other vendors. The video title read, "Why Did This Gorgeous Woman End Up Selling Street Food with a Child Strapped to Her Back?"The person behind the camera approached the stall to buy some food and asked, "Why did you bring your son out to work in this freezing weather?"Mackenzie smiled courteously and replied, "I have no one to watch my son at home, so I have to bring him with me.""Where's his father?""I'm divorced, and the father doesn't want anything to do with him."Mackenzie's expression turned sad as she said this. Her son on her back suddenly broke into loud sobs, grabbing at her hair and holding on t

Chapter 10

I had barely sat down when Mackenzie's son, who was sitting next to us, suddenly started screaming. It was sharp and unrelenting, leaving my head buzzing.Mackenzie finally sat down after calming her son. She stared blankly at him and said, "He has autism and likes to scream for no reason." I couldn't fathom just how stifling it must be for Mackenzie, repeating this life every single day. It was only then that I realized how much she had changed. Her eyes carried a depth of exhaustion and weariness that felt unnerving, lifeless like a bottomless, dried-up well.Mackenzie told me that once their son was born, Caleb grew resentful about having a child with autism. He humiliated her constantly, either hitting her or yelling at her. He soon met a flight attendant and rushed to divorce her."I spent my time taking my son to different hospitals after the divorce. I couldn't find a suitable job, so I started making a living running a food stall," Mackenzie explained calmly, as though she
