Chapter 1

When Elder Lucius Hale rushed in, I was still staring numbly at Ayana's body. The last time I had seen her was ten years ago.Back then, I was preparing to enter the altar. Eight-year-old Ayana had followed me all the way to the steps, sobbing so hard she could barely speak. "I won't sneak snacks anymore. I'll train hard. Please don't leave me!"I turned away. I couldn't bring myself to look at her. After our parents died protecting the pack, my sister and I only had each other left. But I was the only wolf in Silver Moon blessed by the Moon Goddess. Only I could sacrifice my wolf in exchange for her protection. If I spent ten years praying at the altar, Silver Moon would be blessed with a century of prosperity. It was my duty. I could not refuse. So I entrusted my only sister to Soren, the Alpha's heir at the time.We had grown up together, and I trusted him more than anyone.I thought I just had to endure ten years before I could see Ayana again. Never once did I imagine that when I

With my dagger in hand, I strode out of the altar.Behind me, cracks spread across the altar. Then it collapsed into rubble, burying Lucius before he could even scream.Without looking back, I headed straight for pack territory, only to be stopped by the guards at the gates. One of them glared down at me. "The Alpha said that after you got out of prison, you were to reflect on what you'd done. Until he says otherwise, you're not allowed back into the pack!"Before I could answer, a stranger approached. The warriors immediately bowed to him.He gave me a contemptuous look. "Well? Did you come crawling back to beg Lilith for forgiveness?"I realized he had mistaken me for Ayana. We looked remarkably similar.I'd told Ayana that she never had to feel alone when I was away.Whenever she missed me, she could fall asleep hugging a mirror and pretend I was holding her.I pushed down the grief threatening to overwhelm me and looked at the man holding a blade to my throat. "You dare treat me li

Soren had barely left Lilith's side since her miscarriage."Soren, I had another nightmare. I dreamed about our baby. He was standing in front of me covered in blood, asking why I didn't protect him. Melissa sacrificed herself to earn the Moon Goddess's blessing for the pack. How could her sister turn out to be so vicious?"Lilith collapsed weakly against Soren's chest."Don't worry. I've made sure she got what she deserved. No one will ever dare disrespect you again, Lilith."Soren gently kissed the top of Lilith's head."Soren, Ayana is still just a child. Please don't be too hard on her. I know she resents me for coming between you and Melissa, but she never should have hurt our child."Soren gazed at Lilith and held her tighter. Before Soren could answer, a severed head suddenly rolled into the room, shattering the intimate mood."So this is what happens to anyone who disrespects her. Is that right, Alpha?""Aah!" The moment Lilith recognized the head, all color drained from her fa

Before either of them could react, I charged.A guard tried to stop me, but my claws tore straight through his chest.I didn't slow down. My claws were less than a tenth of an inch from Lilith's heart when a black wolf lunged between us.My claws slammed into the wolf's head. The impact sent me flying several yards backward.Soren shifted back into human form and loomed over me. "Ayana, you said you saw your sister. Did you tell her anything you weren't supposed to?"Soren stalked toward me, grabbed my arm, and forced me to look him in the eye.I had to admit, Soren was strong.Over the past ten years, he had grown far stronger and now carried himself like a true Alpha. But he had grown neither wiser nor kinder. He had killed Ayana over a woman no one knew a thing about, and he still didn't even know Ayana was dead."I'm asking you, Ayana. Did you tell your sister anything you weren't supposed to?"I looked up at him. "Come closer. I'll tell you."Soren leaned down. The moment he did,

Soren took a stumbling step toward me. "Melissa, when did you leave the altar?""Soren!"Lilith rushed out from behind him, still cradling her brother's head. "Don't let her fool you! Melissa can't possibly have left the altar alive!"Lilith spun toward the surrounding guards and screamed, "Fire! What are you waiting for? Kill her!"Bowstrings twanged. More than a dozen wolfsbane-coated arrows shot at me from every direction.I tried to dodge, but years of sacrificing my wolf had slowed my reflexes. An arrow pierced my abdomen. I staggered back several steps, coughed up blood, and fell to the ground.Clutching the wound, I slowly pushed myself back to my feet."Soren." I gave him a faint smile. "Is this your choice?"The color drained from Soren's face. His eyes reddened as he hurried down the steps. "Melissa, it really is you!"I stepped back, keeping my distance. "I didn't come back to catch up, Soren. Come with me and see Ayana."Soren's expression changed. He looked away, his voice

Ten minutes later, they were dragged before us.Soren glared down at the trembling prison guards kneeling before him. "Who killed Ayana?"One of the guards raised his head and pointed at Lilith, who was hiding behind Soren."It was Lilith! She gave the order! She said Ayana had killed her child and told us to beat her to death! After Ayana died, Lilith ordered us to dump her body into the altar to destroy the evidence. She also said... she said..."Soren snapped, "What else?""She said if you asked, we should tell you that Ayana had escaped because she couldn't take the torture anymore."Lilith went deathly pale. Her knees buckled, and she crumpled to the floor. "Soren, let me explain! I only wanted to teach her a lesson. I didn't know she would actually die! It was the guards who killed her!"Soren stared at Lilith lying on the floor. After a moment, his clenched fists slowly relaxed. He turned to me. "I'm sorry. I failed to protect Ayana, but please spare Lilith. She once saved my li

No one spoke. The only sounds were Lilith's ragged breathing and the extract hissing as it ate through her flesh."Lilith, don't you have anything to say for yourself?" Soren's voice had lost all its former tenderness.Lilith slowly lifted her head. An eerie smile twisted across her face."There's nothing to say. The truth is already right in front of you, isn't it? Now that you know, there's no point in pretending anymore! That's right. I was never a rogue. I'm a witch."Lilith smiled at Soren. "Did you really believe I was some pathetic, wolfless rogue who'd been cast out by my pack, and that you just happened to rescue me? Did you really think I stayed in Silver Moon because I loved you? I stayed for one reason. I'm here to destroy your pack!""But your scent..."Lilith's smile widened. "I faked it with a potion.""Why?" Soren's voice shook."Why?" Lilith suddenly laughed. "You hunted my people for years and stole our territory. But that wasn't enough for you. The moment you learned
