I stared at the message from my online boyfriend, Cassius, for a full ten seconds."Congratulations, Liam! You drew yourself a 200-pound partner!"The Imperial Academy's group chat instantly blew up."Cassius gambled away his own partner. What a loss!""What loss? After getting rid of a 200-pound partner like that, Cassius will be laughing in his sleep tonight!""@Liam, surprised? Happy?"I scrolled down to the photo they'd posted. It had been taken during my pack's full moon rite when I was fifteen.I was wearing a custom-made XL ceremonial robe.I was so heavy that the fabric stretched tight across my body.My head was lowered as I sat in a corner by the altar, eating a meat pie. Next to the slim she-wolves around me, I looked like a small hill. And the person who had posted the photo was Cassius, my online boyfriend.Just a minute earlier, he'd been comforting me in private with his usual fake sweetness. "Sweetheart, it's just a little joke. I got unlucky in the draw, and Liam ended

When I did not reply, Cassius called.I hung up on him. After I hung up on him five times, he sent a voice message, shouting so loudly it almost hurt my ears. "Layla! Will you stop being so stubborn? Do you have to keep fighting me and make a fool of yourself?"I listened to Cassius rant and replied with a cold laugh, "Wasn't I drawn as someone else's partner? What is he supposed to do if I don't show up?"Cassius let out a breath, clearly thinking I was worried about what people thought. His tone softened. "Here's what you do. Wait until the trial ends, then come over and finish the three partner tasks with Liam. I've already told everyone you won't show up. Don't make me look bad."I almost laughed at the nerve of him.He was the one who had bet me away, yet somehow I was the one making him look bad?Cassius posted the partner tasks in the chat. There were three of them.First, feed each other jerky mouth-to-mouth in front of everyone.Second, post a photo together and announce that

Cassius and I met in an online game. That year, my pack's coming-of-age assessment was approaching. My score would decide which werewolf academy I could attend. My grades had never been good. The pressure was crushing, and my weight climbed past 200 pounds. The boys in my class stuck notes on my back calling me a walking mountain of fat.The girls avoided me like I was disgusting. The worse I felt, the more I ate. The more I ate, the heavier I became.I was trapped in a vicious cycle.Sarah could not stand watching me suffer, so she introduced me to a video game where I could blow off steam.Once, during a pack hunting assessment, I struggled just to catch one rabbit.By the time I made it back, everyone else was already waiting for me.I handed over my rabbit, gasping for breath and barely able to stand.A boy I used to have a crush on looked at me with disgust and backed away."If you're going to fall over, do it somewhere else. I'm not catching a pig."Everyone burst out laughing.I

On the day of the trial, I woke up to dozens of unread messages. The group chat was already buzzing about the trial. Before it began, there would be a new student assembly where the instructors would go over the rules.Someone already at the venue deliberately posted a photo of a chair."Spare a thought for the poor chair. A 200-pound porcupine is going to sit on it. Will it hold?"Cassius immediately replied, "She won't come. Don't worry."Then Claire chimed in with her fake concern again. "Everyone, promise me you won't laugh at Layla anymore, okay? You'll hurt her feelings."I was still reading the messages when there was a knock.Sarah stormed into my house carrying two makeup cases."Get up and get ready! I checked. Everyone changes into their trial uniforms after arriving at the academy. Right now, you need to look as gorgeous as possible! Let's make those bastards' jaws drop!"She pushed me into the chair and said, "I'm making you look amazing today."Sarah got straight to work.

The countdown hit zero just as the door flew open. The bang echoed through the hall, cutting off every laugh and shout.Dozens of mocking gazes swung toward me.The smiles froze on their faces.Kevin, the gray-haired werewolf nearest the door, stared at me. Then his eyes lit up, and he rushed over with an eager smile."You must be in the wrong place. This is the Imperial Academy's freshman trial assembly."Another werewolf, who had been shouting about collecting the money, immediately changed his tune. "Even if you are, no problem! Maybe meeting here is fate. Come sit with me!"Minutes ago, they'd been complaining that the hall was too crowded. Now they looked ready to clear every seat around them just to make room for me.I paid them no attention and looked straight at the writing on the cake.Kevin followed my gaze. His expression changed, and he hurriedly stepped in front of the cake."Ahem, this is... just the guys messing around. Don't get the wrong idea. We're usually decent peop

At the sound of my name, the entire hall fell silent."That's Layla? Cassius, are you fucking kidding me?!"Kevin's shout shattered the silence. He pulled up the photo on his phone, stared at it, then at me, going back and forth several times. In the photo, my face was so chubby that my ears were barely visible. Now, my collarbones stood out above my fitted black dress, which hugged my slim waist and showed off one long leg."L-Layla? You mean that Layla?""Seriously? The obese girl from the chat?""Impossible. She's got to be fake. Layla was too scared to come, so she hired some hot girl to show up for her!"A girl carefully compared the photo with my face, then shook her head."It's the same person. Look at her eyes, nose, and mouth. She just lost weight."The guys who had mocked me the hardest wore complicated expressions. The one who had called me a porcupine on two legs quietly turned his face away. The one who had said I could sit on the prey and crush it to death wouldn't even l

After the assembly, everyone headed for the trial ground. The people who had mocked me the loudest were suddenly quiet, their faces awkward.Someone scoffed, "Liam didn't lose. He hit the jackpot."When they first came up with the partner tasks, everyone had been dying to watch. They had imagined Liam sharing a piece of jerky mouth-to-mouth with the 200-pound version of me, posting our photo online, then carrying me around the trial ground. They'd expected a comedy show.Cassius stood at the edge of the crowd, his expression dark as a storm cloud.Liam looked down at me and asked, "No regrets?""What is there to regret?"I looked at the task list Cassius had sent me. The first was to share a piece of jerky mouth-to-mouth.Kevin handed me a piece and grumbled, "If I had known Layla looked like this, I would have made sure I got picked instead of Liam."I had barely put the jerky between my teeth when Cassius rushed forward."Liam! Forget the game! Layla is my partner! I'll give you 10,0

Liam carried me steadily around the trial ground while the others followed beside us, cheering and making jokes. With my arms around his neck, I could feel the warmth of his chest through his shirt. My ears started burning."If it gets to be too much, put me down. I don't want this to hurt your trial score."Liam glanced down at me without breaking his stride."Layla, don't you know you should never tell a man he can't handle something?"Kevin jogged over, waving his phone."Liam, look at the camera! We need a picture of this!"Liam frowned."Put the phone down."Kevin grinned and backed off."Got it. We're not allowed to take pictures of your girlfriend."The word girlfriend sent the crowd into another round of cheers.Cassius's expression darkened. He stormed over and stuck out an arm to stop us."Liam, that's enough!"With me still in his arms, Liam simply stepped around him."Cassius, Layla is my partner now.""But she is my..."Cassius cut himself off.Everyone was looking at him.

Cassius stared at Liam, his face dark with anger."Liam, Layla is your temporary partner and nothing more! We've been together for a year. You don't get to stand here and judge our relationship."Liam looked at him and said flatly, "You were together for a year, and you still gambled her away to someone else?"Cassius flushed red.No one spoke, but the way they looked at him said everything. He suddenly turned toward me."Layla, I know I went too far today, but I never actually wanted to break up with you. It was only a game. Why are you taking it this far?"Suddenly, I was tired of the whole thing. My wrist still ached, and even now, Cassius did not think he had done anything wrong. In his mind, I was the one overreacting."Cassius, you were the one who paired me with Liam," I reminded him calmly. "I followed your rules and completed every task. So why are you so upset now?"Cassius's voice rose sharply. "I said it was a joke!"I looked at him and repeated, "And I took it seriously. C
