Chapter 1 Guilt Trip

I took a deep breath, stepped forth, and held my mother's hand. "She just flew back home, and the bracelet's the first thing she asks for, Mommy. I think she really loves it. If the rightful owner wants it back, we should give it back to her."I made sure to emphasize that she was the rightful owner so everyone could understand what I was implying. The look on Queenie's face changed. She parted her lips to say something, but I wasn't going to give her any quarter."Mr. Chandler." I turned around, my eyes already wet with unshed tears. "Mommy was just discharged after her car accident and has forgotten a lot of things. Please don't get mad at her for not giving Ms. Samson the bracelet. "You know how Mommy is; she just really hates parting with the things you give her. She treasures everything that you've given her."A month after she married into this family, my mother told me to gradually change how I addressed Yves. I had started calling him Daddy at the end of the first month

Chapter 2 The Auction

I stared at the comments and considered the advice. It had been six months since we moved into this residence. Although Yves had told everyone my mother was his wife, Liliana, the matriarch, refused to accept her.The reason was simple. My mother came from an ordinary background and was a single mother to boot. Liliana was wary that my mother was a sneaky snake. To be fair to the woman, she wasn't technically wrong.Liliana only showed up during the monthly family dinner, and she barely spared me and my mother a glance. If we could get our hands on that ring, then maybe we could use it to change her perception of my mother.…The next day, my mother and I arrived at the auction venue on time. Alas, we saw Queenie holding Yves' arm. I was shocked. Apparently, he had managed to forget all about yesterday's event. She made her way to us almost the very next moment. "I'm sorry for saying that yesterday, Yvonne. It's just… I've been overseas all these years, and memories can be so ha

Chapter 3 The Real Ring

Yves and Queenie left after the auction came to a close. However, Yves came to my mother before they left and said warmly, "I'm sorry you had to go through that, but that ring's not the only thing we got. Tell me what you want, and my assistant will send them over."I'll take Queenie over myself tomorrow. She is the guest, after all. You and Tina should go with the chauffeur."My mother nodded without hesitation. Yves was looking at her, emotions swelling in his eyes. He wanted to say something, but he went into the car without saying anything in the end.…The next evening came without much fanfare. The Chandlers' estate was brightly lit. Liliana was in the main seat, and Queenie was already there, buttering her up. "I got Ocean's Heart at yesterday's auction for you, Liliana. Surprise."Liliana took the ring and sighed. "You're so thoughtful." She scanned the entrance and added coolly, "Unlike a certain someone. Dinner began a while ago, but they're still not here. Do our rule

Chapter 4 Back and Forth

Dinner came to a satisfying end as my mother and Liliana grew closer after the ring debacle. Even Yves was looking at my mother with a hint of admiration in his eyes. Meanwhile, Queenie was forgotten and left to rot in a corner. After all, she had been gone for years, and there were just some things she couldn't pitch in about.Liliana then specifically asked Yves to take my mother and me home after dinner, while Queenie was sent home by a chauffeur. Queenie glared at my mother hatefully when we were waiting for our respective rides. Finally, she sneered, "I've truly underestimated you. You act like you're innocent, but I know that you're a scheming fox wearing sheep's skin. There's no way you aren't. That's how you got Yves to be so loyal to you."My mother might be like a naive little princess after having lost her memories, but she wasn't all that slow. So, she caught the malice lacing Queenie's tone. She frowned and was about to say something, but I interjected before she

Chapter 5 Their Past

I grabbed my mother and hopped into a car that drove us to Yves' company. My mind was working a mile a minute, coming up with plan after plan before discarding them just as quickly. I didn't know much about my mother's past, and she was useless now that she was suffering from amnesia. She never told me about her earlier years, and she certainly never mentioned how she got pregnant with me.All I knew was that she had poured every single cent she got on me. I also knew that she only became a gold digger because of the deadweight that was me. We'd gone through some awful dark days in the past. If she hadn't plotted and schemed her way to success, we'd probably still be living in a rundown rental and surviving on scraps.I had always wondered if my mother would be better off without me, but I never dared to voice my questions aloud.…When we arrived at the company, we immediately saw a man on the ground. He howled at the top of his lungs, "You have to help me, Mr. Chandler! Yv

Chapter 6 Spill the Beans

Queenie said softly, "But judging from the photos on the Internet, she started wearing designer goods a few years ago and was seen in upscale restaurants with many men. You're telling me that's fake?"The men snapped out of it and chimed in, "Don't fall for her! She's an actress! That's the face she wore when she swindled my money! Do you really think she dated you because of who you are, Mr. Chandler? She wouldn't have cared about you if you weren't rich!"Yves' face darkened considerably. It had only been a year since he met my mother, fell in love with her, and married her. Before they got married, he swore up and down that my mother wasn't after his money. So, all the rumors about her gold-digging past over the last six months got to him a little. As time passed, a shadow of doubt began to take root in his mind.Just then, an imperious voice came from beyond the crowd, declaring, "I don't know much about her past, but I know that part of it involved saving my life!"Everyone

Chapter 7 He Promises

Yves slowly bent over and removed her fingers from his leg one by one. "Yvonne has nothing to do with this. I'm the one who fell for her, and I'm also the one who insisted on marrying her. You should've let the past stay in the past. I would've considered you a friend if you'd let sleeping dogs lie, but after everything you did today… You've disappointed me, Queenie."Queenie crumpled on the ground, her makeup smudged. She could no longer match the image Yves had for his one true love. I grabbed my mother and approached the two elderly women. Then, I bowed. "Thank you for defending my mother."My mother bowed as well, her eyes shining with gratitude. "Thank you so much."Erin patted my mother's head as she smiled lovingly. "You saved my life, darling. I'm not so senile that I've forgotten about that. Come to me if you need anything."Liliana's lips were pursed as she harrumphed proudly. "Hmph. Don't thank me. You're my granddaughter-in-law. You don't need anyone else to defend

Chapter 8 Charge

Yves and my mother's relationship warmed up after that. My mother had forgotten a great deal of things, so he declined some of his non-urgent work to go on a trip with my mother. They went to the places they used to go in an attempt to jog her memory, but it did little to help.Queenie suffered the Internet's backlash ever since her true colors were exposed. The Zimmers and the Chandlers both despised her, and no one in the elite circle wanted anything to do with her. She vanished from the public eye soon after.Time passed, and it was my mother's birthday. Due to recent events, Yves made sure the party was grander than ever. Crystal lamps dotted the venue, and there were 30% more guests than usual.Everyone knew my mother was no longer the overlooked woman in this family. That fact was hammered into their brains when she showed up in an aqua blue gown Yves had someone make just for her. She stood by his side, smiling gently. The rich ladies who used to look down on my mother w

Chapter 9 She's Back

When I snapped out of it, I found myself curled on the bench outside the ICU. My fingers clenched around the imperial bracelet that had fallen from my mother's wrist in a white-knuckled grip. It was caked in soil and my mother's blood. It had cracked in two upon impact. My mind chanted over and over again that none of this would have happened if I hadn't opened that door.I was the deadweight dragging my mother down, and now I could be the reason she dies. I hung my head low, my tears splashing against the broken bracelet.Yves came and crouched before me. His white shirt was covered in dust and blood. He pulled me into his embrace. "It's not your fault, Tina. It's not. Your mother will be fine. I had the best doctors on the case."I grabbed his shirt tightly and finally started sobbing. "It's my fault. I shouldn't have opened that door. I'm the reason this happened!"He held me tightly, his throat bobbing. However, even he couldn't come up with any comforting words to soothe
